I recently gave my number to a guy in a wheelchair. I obviously noticed the chair, but I noticed his smile first and that’s what caught my eye. My coworker discouraged me because he might be “needy” or “isn’t looking for something because of his situation”. I was so annoyed by their closed minded thinking! But I think people forget to remember that we all have things that make us needy. Where he “may” be physically needy, I’m emotionally needy. I also have internal health issues that don’t physically present themselves but are a struggle in my day to day life. His personality was amazing and I didn’t wanna lose my chance. I hope things progress because he’s really funny and sweet. So, don’t ever be afraid!

I’m dating a guy in a wheelchair, it happened through a dating app too and I never even cared about the wheelchair, I thought he was super good looking and intelligent, he sent me a message and I replied and now we’re really happy together. I love him so much, unlike many people think, he’s very independent and does everything on his own, he’s not needy like judgmental people think, he’s just a normal person and I saw him like that since day one. People tend to have the wrong idea of it. Romance, sexual life, intelligence, moral wise he’s just the perfect man for me. 😍

The same goes for women in a wheelchair. It's hard to find a good man to love you, care for you, help you. I said it was hard to find, not impossible. Going on 29 years with my man. He took his marriage vows seriously. He didn't say, when things get tough or you can't feel certain things anymore I'm out of here.....no, no, no. He's with me in sickness and in health. Health things can happen to anyone. You are shallow if you bail out on someone because of that. 😊

And, When I confronted my now ex-wife, She told me, She just couldn't live with a man in a wheelchair. My response was, It took you Almost 8 years to decide that? I didn't mean to go on, and on.... You are a good example of what ive been telling my friend, even tho you may have been depressed, you can still go out and find a girl that will date you. But my friend is stuck in the fact that he is stuck in a wheel chair, while I believe if hes persistent with love, he will find it.
@transatlanticnostalgia4655

Okay, so, I've never dated, and as a person with a disability, I've struggled through the perception that no one wants a disabled partner. But realizing a very important truth saved me. I had the perception that I am somehow "less of a man" for having a disability, until I realized that what defines a "true man", the courteous, brave, confident and romantic person that women would like to see, is on the inside. Everyone has the ability to attract any partner they want. It's in the way we speak and act. I won't speak for myself, but there are disabled people who are much more attractive with their actions and manners than some of their able-bodied counterparts. Our personality is our biggest advantage. The people who wouldn't look into our personality are what I call "soul blind". HECK, your friend could even date a celebrity if he wanted to. Anyone can. It's all in our personality, the things that make us special. The most important thing, though, is to choose a person who understands and loves him for what he truly is. The question is not whether you're worthy of someone. But whether that someone is worthy of you.

I’m learning to “redefine” how to answer that blunt question when people notice my disabled veteran car tags. On a dating site, I answered “retired” in the job question. I’m still me, still have a mind, personality, income, those things dating sites seem to hone in on. I DID include in my “describe yourself” that I’m a disabled vet, I use a power chair AND I have a service dog. I had to block tons of trolls that threw b.s. about why would a “broken, disabled person still want love and a relationship?” One thing I’ve know from dealing with my new body, my skin has gotten much thicker.

I had a good friend in college who had a below-the-knee amputation on both legs and often used a wheelchair (he had prosthetic legs, but didn't use them all the time). I didn't care about the chair, I saw Tomas...the funny, wheelchair basketball-playing, popular, college student who was a blast to hang out with. I loved hanging out with him, not because of a chair, but because he was nice, funny, and fun to be around. There are women out there that focus on the person and not a chair or the medical stuff that comes with the injury....if she (or he) can't love you for you and isn't willing to take on whatever challenge your injury may have, then she's definitely not ready for a relationship! An accident can happen to anyone at anytime, so I don't really see the difference in starting life with someone who's had an accident and needs care, or the potential at any point for your partner to need care due to illness or an accident...it's called being an adult and being in a committed, adult relationship.

I have a degenerative condition as well and have definitely had to deal with feeling like "I'm" gone as well. It'll take time and I think it's a bit different with progressive conditions because things are constantly changing, so we're always having to deal with new things. It's not the end of the world at all! There is always someone out there who won't care that you're disabled, they'll love you for who you are. Sounds cheesy, but my girlfriend said that she fell for me because I'm confident, positive and interesting (her words!) and the fact I use a chair doesn't matter to her, except when we're deciding where to go out for a day trip and things like that...

It’s just crazy seeing how able he is, he seems so independent.. my bf is in a wheelchair no nerve issues just didn’t do the physical training from his back surgery 4 years ago.. and stopped walking but we’re training now! But his mother pretty much did everything for him for years and got carried to the bathroom by his brothers to where even his hands don’t work very well let alone his eyelids from never looking up at anybody. It’s amazing seeing someone so functional. He gets really mad whenever I try and make a suggestion to help him better.. like us doing leg, hips, and core exercise together everyday or not using the knuckle on your thumb to grab stuff but try opening your thumb cause it will get you more used to grabbing stuff... but he just gets angry. Even this video he got really mad that I was watching it. I really feel like I can’t say anything to him.. almost like he wants me to lie to him and he doesn’t wanna do what will help him. The simplest stuff like getting protein shakes after our workout, nope. Just working out for an hour. LOOK WHERE THATS GOT US. NOWHERE CLOSE TO WALKING. He always just wants to fuck, get kisses, and be told good things. I left straight out of high school and halfway across the country to come live with him cause he told me he’d be walking in 1 or two months and all the pretty stuff we’d be doing.. one year later can’t even stand. NO PROGRESS BUT TEN POUNDS ON HIS WEIGHTS. I don’t know what to do I feel like I’m wasting my precious youth and time for college just sitting inside everyday with no job and going to the gym a few times a week. This is shitty of me to think, I know. But I’m just losing hope for the future I dreamed of.. the adventurous life with the love of my life will be a life of me probably dying young from taking care of my life his life an probably some children’s life’s. All. By. My. Self. His hands don’t workkkkkkkk he can’t lift anything above his head! Let alone lift his head up cause his hunch back prevents it. Damn I have a lot of shit to say... WOW. But I’ll end it here.

Sense of humor, inner strength, and independence are key ingredients to attracting women in my opinion. They love to laugh. They love getting inspired by people with a big heart. The hardest thing about pursuing a relationship while disabled is expectation vs reality. I've noticed that so many people think that when you're in a wheelchair, you're either someone who needs total assistance or someone who just cannot walk (both of which seemed to have flawed thinking). It's never, "Hey let's just get to know this person and see what kind of personality, abilities, and needs they have. If we mesh, that's awesome! If not, that's also okay". I don't want a person to beat around the bush with me, and feel nervous with asking me questions about my disability. I also don't want to be drilled for information, in case, "they're not able to care for me". It's frustrating when I hear people say, "I wouldn't want to date a wheelchair user because I couldn't care for them". I understand that in many cases that may be true but it's not always the situation. It's important to ask questions and to be open and honest with each other.

As the saying goes first impressions are everything. But in the case of wheelchair users that is not true like ever because making assumptions just make an ass out of the person without asking the wheelchair user even if the non-disabled person does not see the wheelchair but the wheelchair user as who they are.

Watched this and really got a lot out of it. I'm currently in a relationship which has stalled since having a spinal injury late last year. Have been scared to end it because of the disability I have now. My partner does not encourage me in my efforts to return to a "normal" life and doesn't even ask how I am going with things like physiotherapy and other activities I have tried to return to. Really get the feeling that she doesn't care. I suppose, as they said in the interview, you get in a relationship with somebody because of that person, not their disability.

Are you a member of any support groups? I’m a member of Spinal Cord Injury USA group and there are people there that are more qualified and experienced in this matter. I don’t wanna speak on anything I don’t know about 😊

Russell Spencer If you've thought about ending the relationship, keep in mind how you'll feel when you're not dating her. Will you feel more relaxed, happier, open up other chances to meet other women, friends, work out, etc. It's a difficult decision but sounds like you've gotten good advice about joining a support group. One idea also is maybe talking to military veterans who've gone through this?

Wheels2Walking Oh that’s a tough one, but I’m going to say the instructional ones like your latest with Jesi on doing transfers. When you can roll up education, inspiration and motivation with a sprinkle of humor you know you are doing something right. I love the Q&A on the streets too, but honestly I love the variety of them all. I’d love to see a video from family and friends about their ups and downs over the years. Also as a fair warning if you are out and about in Atlanta and a big, bald man with a long beard squeals like a little girl and comes running up to you please don’t hit me I’m just excited to see you in person.

Amazing advice for even able bodied persons like myself. Everyone has struggles and insecurities and limitations whether it be mentally or physically etc. This video just reinforces to have confidence and acceptance and love for yourself regardless, then you’ll attract more of that in people around you, love and acceptance for themselves and ultimately for you as well. It all circulates back around. You attract what you are. Love it!

I’ve been with my girlfriend for 11 years and we are very happy. It’s took time for me to be ready to date seriously. Getting used to rejection is key and after a while it’s easy. Making sure I had my life in order was important also. Get your own place and money coming in. Buy some good clothes and take care of your self physically. The bottom line is just go for it! You will be amazed at how many people are cool with the wheelchair and it can actually be an asset if you carry yourself well. Life of short, don’t let fear stop you from doing anything.

Awesome honesty. I have found that women really enjoy getting to know about our lives/injuries and over the years theyve treated me very well. Sure there are women who probably wouldnt date me but thats the same for all people. I think especially great women tend to find us and its a bit of a test to love someone with a very different lifestyle. It shows something about friends and lovers that means a lot to people like us. Cathing was always the most awkward information to share with others. Many of us have found awesome women and I really beleive anyone can. Ive had entire bars cheersing me because of the women on my lap... Ive gotten unsolicited numbers.. even old ladies try to help me out of the car 😆 The love is out there for all people. I just concieved naturally no problem... fu&k yeah ✊🏻✌🏻

When you were talking about one day being permanently wheelchair bound, I thought of a dude I see around town occasionally. He has a mini van but it's so amazing. The first time I saw him roll out of it, I was amazed. I didn't know that anyone made something like this. Okay so, the guy is in a motorized wheelchair (I don't know him personally and I don't know if he's able to walk) and he drives to where ever he's going then the back of his car opens (with probably a remote button) and a ramp comes down. He wheels out the back, pushes a button, the car closes and he goes about his business. It's just a thought for one day if you do become totally wheelchair bound. Independence isn't easy to let go of and at least you'd still be able to drive this way. And by yourself, too! I don't think anyone else was in this guy's car.

I drove school bus for 17 yrs, after 5 yrs in, I got a special Ed run where I had a little boy in a wheelchair, he was such a sweetheart, but he could not carry on a conversation or do anything. I would take him to school, take him and his chair off the bus, wheeled him in to the school and I would head back home. On my way home I would just bawl my eyes out, I knew he would never be able to do things that I or any kids would be able to do. I did this for a few weeks and had to come off the run cause it was. Upsetting me to see him and know I could not do anything to make him better. I know God puts us into these situation and gives us the cards that we must get accustomed to but it’s hard so I give everyone in a wheelchair that can function by them self a big hug cause I know it’s not easy and I hope the challenges get easy over time or more stuff is available to help with the disabled. BTW, I know you are str8 but just wanted to say you are amazing and very good looking, your GF is pretty and so glad she has you and you have her. I find your videos amazing and thank you for showing us.

I fell in love with my soon to be husband and he's in a wheelchair. I never viewed him any different from any other human being. He was charming, laid back, and very affectionate he's my best friend and I wouldn't change a thing about him. I am extremely overprotective of him and I fall in love with him so much more everyday. He's such a positive person and I'll be so happy the day I change my last name to his Bookman 😍😍.

I often wish I'd been born much later, into a more accepting world. It's much more difficult if you were born Disabled and don't have a "regular" shaped body. I was never given encouragement to feel I could achieve much. I was too busy avoiding dying, like most of my school friends did (I went to a "special" school). We didn't have disability discrimination laws in the UK until I was past my mid twenties. It's hard to have confidence when you're subtly being told you don't deserve the same as "normal" people. When you lose the ability to bounce back after so many rejections, you just retreat like I've done.

There isn't anyone whom is immune to and guaranteed life without any accidents of which could put them in a wheelchair or bed ridden. It's pure ignorance to look at anyone as less or even by pass a person because of a physical dis ability. It could happen to ANYONE. There are plenty of us whom are not shallow and wouldn't dismiss someone in a wheelchair. It's the heart, the person within whom counts. As a care taker in general, I have a very special place in my heart for anyone with disabilities and the elderly. They are such beautiful people.
