Pouchs have advanges for the way the current collector inside can tap to the anode and cathode compare to typical cylindrical cells. They can be multiple tab in parallel and have the best current path from now, the only bad side is that you need a great mecanical structure to resist the pouch deformation, that cylindrical cells dont have to deal with. The best of both world mecanically and electrically would be a blend of NCA into 4680 tabless technology. This way each cells are self contained mecanically and wont try to inflate during discharge as they are into a cylidrical shape, and the tabless would drasticly reduce the internal resistance that typical NCA have and get very close power density as LIPO or NMC pouch.

Cylindrical cells vs large pouch cells dilema… The smaller 21700 and 18650 just can’t physically deliver and continuously maintain the same power output and input as large pouch cells. If you push them as hard as the pouch, they would generate a LOT more heat (energy loss) due to their poor internal construction design. When talking about “Tesla Plaid cells” we are talking about their 4680 cells that are an order of magnitude superior in every single aspect (power density, internal resistance, thermals, etc) compared to 21700 and 18650 cells that everyone uses out there. Here is an amazing video done by my mate Dave EEVBLOG kzbin.info/www/bejne/npOzfHhsZ8aAZrc where he cleverly summarises everything from a proper electronics engineer perspective and compares the super amazing new and patented 4680 Tesla cells vs a regular large pouch cell. Basically Tesla spent probably a few billions $$ just to get the cylindrical cell internal resistance to “match up” the large pouch cells. They already had billions of dollars on machinery to make cylindrical cells + the cylindrical cells are well suited for their slim “skateboard battery design”. Also, let’s be honest, it’s pretty horrible, painful and costly process joining hundreds of little cells when you can just have 20 cells for a 72v battery (a lot less things to fail). I’ve watched quite a few videos and listened to many podcasts where Elon Musk himself mentions the downsides of using lots of little cells and the countless advantages of going for larger fewer cells. Don’t get me wrong, 18650 and 21700 cylindrical cells still pack big power just not the same as pouch cells. We never see high power RC cars running on cylindrical cells for a reason. If I have the two options I would go for larger pouch cells. This discussion can go on and on forever but yeah… =]

Does the storm be battery have any cooling input output ports? The one thing I'm very curious about: how hot do the cells in the e BMX battery get? Elevated temperatures is the number one mechanism for battery degradation!
@BrunoPOWEEER Жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, neither the Surron Storm Bee or Light Bee have any cooling ports, these are just cells packed inside an extruded aluminium case and not potted so the heat stays a bit trapped inside like a thermal bottle effect. It will eventually dissipate heat but there’s a “thermal delay” due to the air gap between the cells and the case. The EBMX battery the cells are fully potted and premium pouch cells we use with large tabs on top and bottom offer less electrical resistance and act as a large heatsink extracting heat from inside the cells. because it’s fully potted the heat can be transferred to the metal case. Just so you have an idea in terms of heat, people are running these batteries at 200A peak and the cells we are using can handle 300A continuous (more than the BMS can handle continuously) we have 2500 EBMX batteries sold, the only company offering 2 years warranty on the batteries.

@@eastwood111 It's not that they can't deliver the power, they just cant deliver the power in the same space. Pouch cells lay flat against each other, while traditional cells, in the most space efficient way, can only lay in a honeycomb pattern, with wasted space in between. The power draw potential is also much higher on pouch cells, I believe.
