One comforting thing is that this event is nothing compared to the 2003 Halloween solar storms. Bad thing is we've seen weaker storms effect farther south than previous solar cycles. Our magnetic field is weakening and prepping to flip, so less will do more to us.

It's highly dependent on strength of the earth's magnetosphere (which is presently diminished), orientation (CME direct hit or glancing), and polarity (is it negatively charged and able to couple with the earth's charge to induce transient voltages at high amplitude). Other regional variables as well... iron content of near surface rock/soils, latitude...
