"Casey Jones" is a character in old folk song--though this song has little resemblance to it. I always interpreted this as the Grateful Dead, who were right smack dab in the middle of the 70s drug culture, viewing the wreckage around them. Casey Jones was a stand-in for people who were taking the party a little too far. Their best song, IMHO, is "Ripple," which is deeply spiritual.

When you talk about "rabbit holes" the one involving Grateful Dead is the deepest, widest and most varied in the business. They played over 400 different songs live in their thirty year career, 1965-1995, when Lead Guitarist and Co-Lead Vocalist Jerry Garcia passed. Other surviving members still tour. I was at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on 6/20/92, when The Dead played their first live "Casey Jones" in more than eight years. Drummers Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart came onstage with real train airhorns, and serenaded the crown for about two minutes with them. LOUD. Then the whole band came out and they played Casey Jones, and everyone went crazy. Further exploration should start with "U.S. Blues", "Truckin' ", " Shakedown Street", "Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream", "Scarlet Begonias/Fire On The Mountain", "Help On The Way/Slipknot/Franklin's Tower", "Cumberland Blues", and ""Touch Of Grey". That will get you started.

John Luther "Casey" Jones (March 14, 1863 - April 30, 1900) was an American railroader who was killed when his passenger train collided with a stalled freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi. Jones was a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad, based in Memphis, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi. He was noted for his exceptionally punctual schedules, which sometimes required a degree of risk, though this was not a factor on his fatal last journey. However, there is some disagreement about the sequence of events on that night, April 29-30, 1900. He was due to run the southbound passenger service from Memphis to Canton, Mississippi, departing 11.35pm. Owing to engineer absence, he had had to take over another service through the day, which may have deprived him of sleep. He eventually departed 75 minutes late, but was confident of making up the time, with the powerful ten-wheeler Engine No. 382, known as "Cannonball". Approaching Vaughan at high speed, he was unaware that three trains were occupying the station, one of them broken down and directly on his line. Some claim that he ignored a flagman signalling to him, though this person may have been out of sight on a tight bend, or obscured by fog. All are agreed, however, that Jones managed to avert a potentially disastrous crash through his exceptional skill at slowing the engine and saving the lives of the passengers at the cost of his own. For this, he was immortalized in a traditional song, "The Ballad of Casey Jones".

I saw the Grateful Dead 150 with Jerry & many times since in different configurations, including the current “Dead and Company” which is totally awesome!!!” There are numerous fantastic Dead cover bands across the US! The premier cover band imho is “Dark Star Orchestra”, They recreate entire shows and if you close your eyes you’d swear it was the Dead!!! They tour the country & are totally worthy. The Dead experience is as much about Deadheads (core fans) which is the most fantastic audience a band could ever ask for!!!, Kind, peaceful & loving!!! I could not think of a better way to have spent the last 40+ years of my life , I am truly blessed & Grateful!!!👍👌✌️😁

Their catalog is immense--by one estimate 184 original songs and 304 covers. Plus, they performed live for 30+ years, with most shows being about 3 hours long. They never played the same song the same way; they are the godfathers of jam music. So each concert is like all new material.

This is the absolute beginnings of a genre known as Acid rock. This was a time when many musicians were Experimenting with LSD. They were actual participants in what was later known as The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test, along with Ken Kesey (author of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest) and his band of "Merry Pranksters".

Owsley "Bear" Stanley as the group's chief sound man and was a clandestine chemist. He was a key figure in the San Francisco Bay Area hippie movement during the 1960s and played a pivotal role in the decade's counterculture. In late 1967, Stanley's lab was raided by police; he was found in possession of 350,000 doses of LSD and 1,500 doses of STP. His defense was that the illegal substances were for personal use, but he was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison. It is my understanding he was perhaps the largest supplier of acid at the time.

Maybe it's because I'm an eighties child so the majority of my grateful dead exposure early on was of their last album or maybe it's just because it really is a really really good song but eitherway if you're new to the dead and want to hear more of their music I highly suggest my favorite dead tune "Touch of grey." You might find out it kind of suits you anyway. Regardless, always remember that every silver lining has as a touch of gray. The runner up to my favorite of the dead songs would have to be truckin. definitely give that a listen as well. from my understanding Jerry wrote it after they had gotten busted with drugs in new Orleans. Supposedly he was very very angry about the whole situation and firmly believed it was a big setup but I find it really awesome that he was able to channel all that anger into something positive that, at least for me, became legendary and that would be the song Truckin. On a semi related side note and I apologize I cannot remember the book's title to save my life but Phil lesh of the grateful dead wrote an amazing biography about his time with the dead and his personal life and the creation of phish. it's a really good read IMHO Ty for this upload. Box of Rain (my favorite) Eyes of the World (I think you'll both dig this one) Monkey and The Engineer (to continue the railroad vibe) Scarlet Begonias (tucked into her curls; not like other girls) Truckin' (not about Truckers, but we should keep them in mind) So many great original songs, and lots of great covers too. "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now". NOT a quote from a Dead tune, but something that we all need to keep in mind and try to do (IMHO).
