"They're not the best at what they do, they're the ONLY ONES who do what they do." ~ Bill Graham

The dead are hard to categorize, this song is at their folkiest. Jerry Garcia who sang this song is also lead guitarist who could improvise beautiful melodic lead guitar during live performances. The other big component was Robert Hunters lyrics which multi faceted and intriguing. The Dead’s studio albums usually provide a concise rendering of the songs and the live recordings are where it really gets musically interesting. For more song like this one try “Uncle John’s Band” or “Box of Rain”. They are basically a mixture of traditional American styles through a psychedelic lens. Maybe try their song “Eyes of the World” or “unbroken Chain” both from Mars Hotel. Album. Or go back to the sixties with “St. Stephen”. Or go with the funky pop of “Shakedown Street”. The dead did a lot of different stuff ranging from folk to acid rock to Prog and Frisian. Always sweet warm and alluring.

Ripple is a huge fan favorite, but was a song that they played a lot earlier in the touring career, but had all but disappeared from their live shows. The Dead played it during a run of shows in 1980 and shelved it again. They performed it one final time on September 3, 1988. Not only was it 8 years since they had last played it, it was the first time in 17 years that they played an electric version of it. By extraordinary luck, this was my first ever Dead show. When they came back out with Ripple for the encore, the crowd went nuts. Here is the setlist from that night. Not a bad lineup for your first show! SET 1 Good Times Feel Like a Stranger Franklin's Tower Little Red Rooster Peggy-O Me and My Uncle Big River Bird Song SET 2 Box of Rain Victim or the Crime Foolish Heart Man Smart, Woman Smarter Eyes of the World Drums Space Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad I Need a Miracle Morning Dew ENCORE One More Saturday Night Ripple

I have followed the dead since the mid 60's and I can't even begin to tell people what they are, you just have to dive in and experience the music. Every song is different and will move you in its own way by what you take from it. Live is probably better than studio, at least that's what most people say. The American Beauty album is a classic starter and recommend, after that just dive in and if you don't feel it, move on to the next, because they will do it different somewhere down the line and you will love it.

The Grateful Dead were born out of the Acid Tests and the Haight-Ashberry in San Fransisco. So yes, peace and love and all that stuff. It is the flame that they carried and nurtured for oh so many years. No boundaries, just music for the joy of it.

So I’m a big deadhead and the more live dead you listen to the better every show is different and every song is different from night to night. One of the best shows that you should listen too is the 1977 Cornell show! All the songs are fantastic!!! My favorite is Morning Dew it’s probably Jerry Garcia best guitar work!! The other great song is They love each other. Check it out!!

Their studio recordings are hit or miss. Check out Terrapin Station from 1977. It’s a 16 minute long epic and is kind of like the Dead version of Zeppelin’s In the Light. Box of Rain is also a solid studio recording.

What is this music called? It's their own category,.. its the grateful dead! ;-) But in general, rock, folk rock, jam band gets you in the zone. Enjoy the Journey. Maybe hit a couple of their bigger hits then journey on down the rabbit hole. Songs: China Cat Sunflower, Cosmic Charlie, Casey Jones, Touch of Grey, Alabama Getaway would hit a handful of their more recognizable songs. Then go onto like Uncle Johns band and a hundred other songs. Seen em live over a hundred times. It's a culture. Peace.

Can't pick one or 10 fav songs, studio or live.. if liven then which year or the date.. You have to listen to them and find YOUR favorite. As far a "slow" songs, Attics of my life, Stella Blue, Brokedown palace, Crazy Fingers are a few.

Some have said that this song has lyrics that are based on the Bible and/or the Koran and also has some Hyku in it. In any case it is a beautiful and spiritual song that gives you something to think about. For something completely different from them try their song "One More Saturday Night". I would also recommend "Tennessee Jed" or "Brokedown Palace". Nice reaction.

You can't pigeon hole them into any category, each album has it's own style. I found the Dead in 85 first show in 87 and saw them over 100 times. The choir was a sit in on this song. Later they do have a female singer. If you want a complete opposite of this song listen to The Other One, not mellow. LOL anyway this might not make sense i am typing during your outro and answering things as you ask. The rest of this album American Beauty is mostly like this song. Enjoy your journey.

The Deads sound was made of so many "genres" Actually EVERY genre !!! you just gotta know where to look - and do not discount the studio albums - the end product was what the band wanted to put out. Quite good production values IMO I will say though - that I cannot listen to Jerry sing after maybe '81 - he voice was so shot. Play yes, sing no. The cigs finally caught up - he was sadly a serious smoker. I followed the Dead in my youth and saw them too many times to remember - free outdoors, small venues, colleges (they were the best shows) After Englishtown, the huge stadium is where as a concertgoer they lost me. The crowds changed - I guess just got too big..... oh but the Music Never Stopped

This is by no means representative of most of the Dead's output, my wife digs the Dead's sing along songs, but she gets bored stiff by their long improvisations , which can become VERY far out, and descend into electronic freak outs or just as likely become mellow and transcendent. Check out the album Blues for Allah , apart from the title track, its a really interesting album of music they worked out in the studio which is totally different to this acoustic number , there really is no equivalent to the Dead , they are what they are, every show was different and they changed quite a lot over their lifetime, going from blues to psychedelic to folk to country and improvising with jazzmen like Ornette Coleman and Branford Marsalis . They had one hit album which has the single Touch of Grey on it, but their later studio albums after Terrapin station were generally below par. They could be great live, when they were on they were like no other band around, , but they also could be terribly sloppy if they were having a bad night. They really defy easy compartmentalization and you probably either love them or loath them .
