@@GabeSquid yup and it’s funny because worse stuff has aired when kids could watch. Back in the 90s, there was an ep of Quantum Leap when Sam leapt into a police detective and one of the memories he was experiencing was seeing the person’s parent’s autopsy I believe. I’m like yet people seem to think Dark Water and DIH were the worst things they’ve ever seen. Someone needs to show those people a few of the episodes of Batman: The Animated Series especially the Feat of Clay and Two-Face two parters. Those were shown during kids programming blocks like Fox Kids in mornings and afternoons. Clayface had that garbage poured on him in silhouette and his hand melted on camera! Makes Dark Water look like Eek The Cat.

@Benjiesbeenbetter. 6 күн бұрын
@@lostgem8225You are proof of what I thought when I read about the episode. I had largely given up on the series, in part because of Moffatt's weird relationship with death. "Don't cremate me" struck me as just sick. The show was still primarily aimed at children, some of whom would have experienced a death in the family. To have "ghosts" uttering this phrase seemed unnecessarily cruel and disturbing. It adds nothing to the story and is just used for shock value.

A little different, but in 1997, the BBC were broadcasting an omnibus episode every Sunday morning. On August 31st 1997, they were scheduled to show the final part of the Key to Time, which involved the “deconstruction” of Princess Astra. Unfortunately, in the early hours of that morning, Princess Diana was involved in the accident, so the BBC just chose to not show the episode at all, to avoid causing offence.

@@n_art_cissist I get what your saying, but Doctor Who isn't really educational and hasn't been since the 60's. If your knowledge of world history comes from a TV show about a time travelling alien, that's on you. That being said, a 'episode contains culturally inaccurate depiction of native people' tag at the start wouldn't be unreasonable. A more accurate episode featuring native Americans might be something Davies should stick on his "to-write" list.

None of that is actually true. We have always had a version of _The Web Planet_ that ends with a next episode caption for _The Lion._ The reason there was also one without that caption was that that was the last story in a batch for foreign sales, so countries not buying the next batch would need a version that didn’t advertise something they weren’t showing.

@samuellawrencesbookclub8250 4 күн бұрын
To be entirely fair to Ms. Whitehouse, not that she deserves it especially, her complaints as regards Doctor Who were typically grounded in the fact that it was a show meant for a family audience. She was concerned by the scene of the Doctor being waterboarded because children might imitate it. Ludicrous though her fear may have been, she was fearful because Doctor Who was a family show. Torchwood, no doubt, would have appalled her sensitive nature, but I doubt she would have complained. Torchwood was a show for adult audiences, this was made very clear in the marketing, the timeslot after the 9pm watershed, and the contents of the show. Without being able to claim that she wished to protect children, I doubt Ms. Whitehouse would have had grounds to complain.

The Series 2 Episode "Fear Her" is currently unavailable on iPlayer, due to the controversy surrounding Huw Edwards, who played a fictional version on himself in the episode. This apparently makes it "the first and thus far only episode of the revived series to have been removed from the platform and the first episode of Doctor Who to be edited due to the serious nature of Edwards' actions" A spokesperson for the BBC said that the removal is temporary, and the episode will be returned after the scene is redubbed by a different actor

Why did they censor anything for Australia? How do you offend an Australian? Besides insulting Paul Hogan or offering them a Fosters? I've served with tons of Aussies and they are way sturdier than us Americans. If you make a joke about being descended from criminals, they'll actually laugh and tell you what their criminal ancestors did to get exiled in the first place. For Americans, I'm considered a bit of a weirdo for admitting that I exist because of a potato famine in Ireland.

Mary Whitehouse was partly responsible for the rise in graphic s3x abd violence on TV. Her rantings also had the effect that producers of, often lacklustre, TV shows could ensure huge publicty by putting something graphic in the opening episode, or towards the end of a one-off drama. Somehow, Mrs Whitewash would always hear about it, put an oversized Thornton's continental on her head, and hit the headlines. Of course, ratings would be much better than anticipated as people would tune in to see a blurry 1¾ second shot of someone's arse bobbing about in undergrowth. To maintain a level of outrage, producers and directors included ever more graphic material until we got characters having their heads fried in chip-pans while still attached to them.

Even then, if only the Doctor hadn't *gone along* with the racism in certain scenes, it probably could have been chalked up to "just showing the culture of the times". The Doctor should at least have been above all that. Adding a scene where the Doctor and Leela compare the English attitude to Chinese folks to the tensions and indoctrinated bigotry between her own tribe and the Tesh *could* have made it (potentially) ground-breaking social commenary!. But for the 1970s (and the production team involved, whom I *mostly* deeply respect), that would be too much to hope for. =:o1

I wondered why The Curse of Clyde Langer wasn't on iPlayer for ages! Fun fact about another Sarah Jane Adventures episode that was censored, in original broadcast of The Empty Planet, Clyde and Rani "borrow" a pair of bikes, Clyde ends up getting the pink bike and complains that it's "a girl's bike," which has since been removed from the version on BBC iPlayer. The interesting thing about this is that Rani retorts "does it matter?" And later on in the episode Clyde cheekily takes Rani's (non-pink) bike instead; Rani is understandably upset but Clyde cockily responds "does it matter?" Thing is because the previous scene was censored the joke doesn't hit quite the same. I absolutely understand why they changed it though.
