We had the pleasure of filming Yuki Okubo at the Tarkanian Classic this past week! He's listed as a 5'5 freshman & plays for Crossroads High School who also features Shareef O'neal. He plays with great confidence and poise, takes good care of the ball & doesn't necessarily care about himself scoring but, rather putting his team in the best position to score. With this mindset he has right now, the future looks bright for Yuki & he makes watching the game more fun.
We're excited to follow up with him down the road!

its funny how so many people that claim to know basketball are saying this video is pointless and want to diminish the value of whats being shown here with stats🤔.. This video brings to the forefront a undersized High School Freshman that is not only playing basketball at a Varsity level but doing it with an extreme level of confidence.. he demonstrates a very high basketball IQ and Skill in the way he takes care of the basketball..... the way he is running the offense, escaping and passing out of double teams says it all.

He's 5'5" and a freshman and y'all are wondering why he doesn't shoot, it's called playing your role and obviously his role isn't to score on this team. You LA Fitness hoopers who come down and pull up from half court every time don't understand true organized basketball at a high level.

Do you know how much heart and talent this kid has? I'm convinced nobody in this comment section has played basketball at a high level before. Considering everybody is bringing up scoring and shit. I see a smart player that is thinking on the court and can be a productive player in the future if he continues to play varsity. It's his potential. Smart ball handler, playmaker. Also a perfect PG for Shareef O'Neal. He's not taking stupid shots. He's taking what the D gives him. I like this kid. He definitely has potential to play college ball. He'll continue to grow and develop, and I'm sure he's way younger than the average freshman.

People complaining how he ain't dropping like 40 points, his role probably ain't to shoot or attack the basket since he mad short, he gonna be a playmaker, make good passes, set his teammates up, get some steals, now once he gets older he'll probably reach a height of 5'9-6' he not bad

Yeah maybe he isn't flashy, but being flashy doesn't win you games. He is busting out the book of fundementals and he is demonstrating them to full capacity. This kid is a freshmen that is shorter than most of the other kids out there on that court and he is playing with the upmost poise and he never looks rattled. I get he only really passes but that's a good thing. He is a point guard. The main point of point guards is to get the ball to teammates to set up a point. Everyone thinks it is a shooting position because of all these "elite" NBA point guards that can "shoot" like Steph, Wall, Lilliard etc. You all need to realize this kid is playing solid basketball and yeah this isn't a flashy mixtape, but is one that this boy should be proud to have out on the internet for various scouts to see. Not to mention the offense wasn't showcased around him in this year. It was showcased around Shareef O' Neil. So ya'll can back off the little man and wait for him to develop. After all he's got 3 more years to prove his worth.

99% of the haters posting couldn't hold this kid's jock. Talented people are humble. They don't have to talk because they can prove it on the court. This kid is a Freshman. There is a tremendous difference, physically, between 15 year olds and 18 year olds. The fact that he's able to compete at the varsity level at 15 would be impressive if he was 6'0", let alone 5'5"! Just about anybody with a lick of talent can learn to shoot (bigger guys often have more trouble for some reason). I wouldn't be surprised if this kid is a 3-point assassin at practice, but the offense is geared around him distributing the ball. He doesn't have lightning speed, so why ask him to shoot jumpers when he's often being guarded by a 6'0" or taller player? So he can get his shots blocked? This dude might grow 6 inches between 15 - 18 years old. Then he'll be slaying teams from the outside. It was a pleasure just to watch someone play with true basketball fundamentals. How often do you see a nice bounce pass nowadays? This kid has the fundamentals down pretty well and when he's a senior with 3 prior years of Varsity ball under his belt he's going to be a baller. No, I don't expect him to end up playing point guard for Duke, but you never know.

All the best point guards are playmakers but also score!
@NadeMEGeneration
@NadeMEGeneration 7 жыл бұрын
Everyone guarding him is at least over 6 ft. If he does play iso/hero ball, he's gonna end up in a poor shot selection or get blocked. He prioritizes team basketball over street ball. The only chance he does get to take a shot is when he is open, which doesn't happen that often since he's running the point and not the wings. Realistically speaking, if you're under 6 ft, you most likely have a jumper considering he gets quality minutes as a freshman in a varsity team despite being 5'5. So naturally the defenders will have to play him up close. From the perspective of that team's coach, he would probably rather have a facilitator that can distribute good passes, right decision making instead of a guard that would want to just takes risky jumpers. ALSO if you look at their team's offense, no one is flashy at all. No windmill dunks, crazy crossovers. All layups and high percentage shots. They just keep it simple and they want someone who can make it even more simpler.

NadeMEGeneration he's good im not debating that fact and I hear what ur saying but him bieng 5'5" compared to the 6' players as u put it is like having. 6' point guard with 6'11"-7' centers and shit. but I do agree is is a good playmaker and he seems to have a good basketball IQ and much potential. All I'm saying is in a time where the point guard has to adapt out of the "normal" "facilitator" to an eclectic player who can take that jumper and who can drive. All the big point guards now adays are all good playmakers but they know the game has Changed and have developed good jumpers. now every player is different with a plethora of playing styles, shooting form, signature moves etc. Westbrook for example has that explosiveness. Basically if he wants to be a pro one day he's gunna have to branch out and stop bieng afraid to take the shots and as u said he's tiny so he should have no problem having the opponent to initiate contact on the shooting motion and drawing the fouls

You're ignoring the fact that he's a 5'5 freshman. They're playing high school basketball. The majority of the time most of their offense and defense comes from zone. So it's highly unlikely a 6 foot guard will guard a 7 footer. As I said before, considering the mindset of the coach he will most likely not be placed in a situation where he can be a Westbrook. No one's gonna put a 5'5 and ask him to pull up on 6' guards. There's no reason for him to do that under the circumstances where he is playing with other players that can make plays for themselves. Unless he does grow, he will barely make any or little hero plays and will most likely end up in a D2 or low end D1 school.

The reason you see nothing is probably because you wanted to see a hero ball type of player making difficult shots. I saw plenty from this kid. 1. He takes care of the ball. He doesn't make stupid decisions and plays within the confines of the game 2. He sets his teammates up really well. Numerous times I saw perfect post entry passes that either led to points or FTs 3. He plays solid defense. He consistently stays in front of his man and I saw numerous steals in there as well He runs the team like a traditional point guard, not in the mold of someone like Kyrie Irving or Steph Curry. Will he have a bright future? Probably not due to his size, but to say you saw nothing tells me all you look for is points. Ask any baller, if they would be down run with a dude who takes care of the ball, sets his teammates up, and plays good defense. NOBODY would say no.

@Drifterking26 7 жыл бұрын
... That is fine but when it comes to a mixtape people expect to see highlights in which he didn't provide. What we saw was him dribbling the ball up the court (Which every point guard should be able to do starting at varsity so isn't really impressive) and then pass to the first if not second option.

***** do you even basketball, bro? "takes care of the ball" ....um he has average handles at best no, I did not expect him to make "difficult shots". I didn't care if he made any points, actually. he did not set up his teammates real well. I saw basic ass passes that your blind, dead grandmother could make. he literally just lobbed the ball across court to teammates, and he only could lob it cuz he's like 46 pounds and can't put power behind his passes. and he does not play solid defense. anyone can just sit there in front of you. they just so happened to show players miss shots while this 'little person' stood by them and pretended to make a difference. you are illogical and delusional

Before everyone yells at me for "not playing at a high level" i am playing d2 next year and play for a very good prep school. This kid doesn't do anything and is too young and small to really get stops. He can move the ball, but that's what all role players are able to do nothing special about swinging the ball. He's not exactly getting to the rim and kicking it out for open shots. Plus he played about 2 min each game that isn't a lot of time. He shouldn't be playing at all yet if u ask me he isn't really good at anything and doesn't contribute at all yet. When he is a senior he might be a player but why keep a glaring defensive liability on the court. Any smart team would just space the floor and take him to the rack every time.

Listen I don't play basketball or know anything about basketball (I'm a volleyball player) but atleast I'm smart enough to acknowledge that because of his position he doesn't shoot but he's really good at getting the ball to the right players so they could score a point (which i'm assuming is what a point guard is). Therefore he's good. I honestly hate when people (who don't know about the sport) only give credit to the person who scores a point and they don't appreciate/give credit to the players who made it happen.

This Is way more realistic basketball than the highlights you see by Lamelo Ball. This is way more fun to watch as it is how the game should be played. It's beautiful. And this kid is gonna be a great college player

Props to the young fellow excelling in what he needs to do and working with what he got, but not everyone will agree cas he's not 6ft and dropping 40 points a game.

being short gives him some pros: 1. difficult to steal from his dribble 2. difficult to steal his low pass (bounce pass). 3. quickness as he can dribble more in 1 seconds makes him can do uptempo moves.

Cons: 1. Easily out muscled and backed down 2. Can't see over the defenders to get off certain passes. 3. Can't get off his own shot without a screen or misplay by the defense. 4. Defensive liability (lack of rebound, physicality, etc..)
