Lyrics:
I cry at the start of every movie
I guess ‘cause I wish I was making things too
But I’m working for the knife
I used to think I would tell stories
But nobody cared for the stories I had about
No good guys
I always knew the world moves on
I just didn’t know it would go without me
I start the day high and it ends so low
‘Cause I’m working for the knife
I used to think I’d be done by 20
Now at 29 the road ahead appears the same
Though maybe at 30 I’ll see a way to change
That I’m living for the knife
I always thought the choice was mine
And I was right but I just chose wrong
I start the day lying and end with the truth
That I’m dying for the knife

This song really makes me think of the physiological implications of basing your whole musical career on the most traumatic and difficult aspects of your life. I really understand why she chooses to not have an internet presence, because I imagine it’d be impossible for her to separate herself from her pain. Making your whole livelihood on expressing your pain doesn’t give you options to heal. Hence “working for” and “dying for” the knife.

isn’t it sad? even Melanie has made songs about this as well, being scared if she says whats on her mind or shows emotion then they’ll throw her away like a banana peel. I feel so bad for artists when they feel like that..
@androcruz645
@androcruz645 2 жыл бұрын
@@rei3878 i feel like mitski’s art is, in a very technical and professional way, a way to personify and deal with very deep and sad feelings and this just feels so beautiful and fantastic at the same time i cried to sleep last night while watching it, all over again, day after day since it was released. i hope she is okay and she feels better and expresses that and enjoys her art and truth, but i can’t help but feeling thankful she’s at least saying the things she’s saying, otherwise the world would feel so much more weird without it. i feel so connected to this sadness as an aspiring artist myself, and a trans person, and even though the feelings are so different, i’m so thankful. i don’t know, just read your comment and felt connected to it and wanted to connect. thank you for sharing about melanie, i didn’t know about these topics in her songs, i’ll try and listen to them more.

Why do i feel like this is how mitski feels a bit pressured to continue being sad to make music, cause thats what she has been doing so far. Like the lyrics about things seeming like it wont change, and "I start the day high, and it ends so low". And she's working for the knife cause if she continues making really sad music it's gonna affect her mental health too.
@CandyBookGirlz
@CandyBookGirlz 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like it is that to some degree but I think this song talks about the struggle of making authentic art while dealing with the pressure of making money. Having to pursue the daily grind of getting things done to not be homeless or dead is difficult but the work itself also kills us. “Working for the knife” is literally working a job that exacerbates our suffering. We don’t really have a choice except to die for something while being aware of what it does to us.

@coda same here I hope you’re doing alright and beautifully said! I’m struggling much less than I was then, this song just feels so relevant with its references to past trauma and being disenchanted with the adult world. Not to say it’ll be easy but I think we’ll be okay.

for me, this song is about how her music career is driven by her traumatic experiences, and how if she tried to write a positive song it wouldn’t sell well. that’s why she said “i used to think i would tell stories but nobody cared for my stories i had” and the last scene was probably there to portray her traumatic experiences.

Everyone has their own interpretation of this song but for me as a recent college grad it's really about going through the monotonous day to day routine of working a 9 to 5 and how quickly you get disillusioned, thinking you would feel accomplished by the time you reach a certain age when in reality the "the road ahead appears the same". "My day starts high and it ends so low" trying to motivate yourself every morning to only come home feeling dead tired ti and drained. "I cry at the start of every movies cause I guess I wish I was making stuff too" feeling like you have no creativity left in you to explore any hobbies.

i interpret this video as not wanting applause and/or praise anymore. Being praised for delivering a message you initially didn't want to spread with your work. that's why she's dancing the way she is at the end, to remind people that her art and music is not supposed to be easy to swallow, but be moved and almost disturbed by it. That she can convey strong emotions, good or bad. i love mitski so much.

I kept trying to figure out what kind of knife this song is about. and then one day I remembered that Mitski is of Japanese origin. In ancient Japan, a master sharpened a knife throughout his life, the culture of working with metal was brought up by the Japanese for centuries! This is the real philosophy of the knife. This is art. This song actually has a very deep meaning. Mitski is just a genius!

One of the best songs I have heard in a long time. It actually brings me to tears sometimes, because this is exactly how I feel at 20 years old. It's such an overwhelming, oppressive feeling, knowing you could have done something else with your life, but you're stuck in a hard, exhausting path with little to no fulfillment or chance of escape. I don't think any other musician has been able to encapsulate that feeling quite like Mitski.

near the end it's almost as of mitski is alone with her thoughts, she does many different dances but they all seem to be in another setting, like a reflection of all the times she wished she could have made other choices or been a better version of herself to mesh better with what society views as socially correct. Instead she's left with these vivid memories and the time alone to reflect on them. Honestly this is so well thought out a masterpiece.

i think this song is about her career. in the very beginning she makes it clear that she is prevented from enjoying some things or living situations because she is working for the knife. the knife would be the music industry, in the part where she says she had stories to tell but no one cared to listen to them would be her ideas that were ignored or discarded. she also shows in the song that she is very dedicated to her work no matter how frustrating it is

I feel like the "knife" that the song talks about could be society, how we live as society says we should live. How tiring its working for society and its standards, we lie to be "accepted" in society, but deep we know the truth. " I always thought the choice was mine And I was right, but I just chose wrong I start the day lying and end with the truth That I'm dying for the knife" In this part it talks about the time when society doesn't need you anymore, and with that rejection we stop fitting in and with this, "we die for the knife" I really loved this song and how everyone interpreted it differently, I hope you liked this song too

I know that Mitski's songs usually have different interpretations but i see this as how capitalism means that she is constantly working and striving for something more even if it doesn't exist in the real world. I think the line about crying at the start of movies may relate to the media portraying 'success' but we can never reach it. Also at the end she is still performing even though the music has finished, I think this relates to always feeling like she has to do more and more and more but it's never enough. This is just my opinion based on listening to it once and there's obviously other meanings/interpretations too edit: i also had another idea that the line/title 'working for the knife' could mean that sge has lost control over her career. When you have a knife you are the one controlling it however the fact that she's working for it makes it seem as if it has control over her and may be dangerous.

“I start the day high and end so low” describes a lot of peoples days so much because they start the day convincing themselves something good is going to happen or something good is going to change, but throughout the day you realize nothing is going to change and your just going to work your entire life. Working for the knife. Mitski you never fail to amaze me

Mitski is the only artist that has really truly made me feel seen and heard. I’ve found so much solace in her music, especially recently due to a heartbreak, she came when I needed her the most 🤍

I love the way Mitski expresses the exhaustion, the exhaustion that people expect, in fact, she puts a lot into this clip about the industry itself, and the way that sometimes artists need to call attention, like, the way that everyone om the top want them to be, i rlly love how mitski says a lot of things on her art.

“I used to think I’d be done by 20, Now at 29 the road ahead appears the same, Though maybe at 30 I’ll see a way to change” MITSKIIIII WHY WOULD U SAY THAT??? this hits too close to home

In my opinion, this song is absolutely for the working class. They don't have time to indulge in the things they want and are constantly either working to feed their families or can't afford/ have the time to do the things they really want to do. In this music video, for the character mitski is playing, it would be an aspiring actress. Mitski Is portraying a young woman who wants to act and has dreams of it, hence why she is onstage to an empty crowd, but instead of fulfilling those dreams and having the money to, she's "Working for the knife" aka, most likely a 9-5 job. In the role she is playing, she also doubts that she will be a breakout actress because she says, "I used to think I’d be done by 20/ Now at 29 the road ahead appears the same." Meaning she thought she could be a huge, popular actress and be well off for the rest of her life, but sadly, she is not- and is still working as a slave to the system. My last observation would be at 1:40 when she puts a fake cigarette up to her lips, she looks longingly into the distance. She just yerns for the day she could see herself on stage and not struggle anymore.

Whoa. Love your interpretation of her as an aspiring actress. I’m so glad people are already theorising and putting so much thought into her music, bc she puts so much thought into it for us.

“I used to think I would tell stories, but nobody cared for the stories I had about *NO GOOD GUYS*”. That’s what most of her songs are about, even though it’s in the lyrics, it might feel like people were hearing her songs but weren’t listening. So the stories turn into just words, words selled and consumed by the media, it’s interpretation being the knife. It might feel like it’s about her music career becoming as like a job, something that can be manufactured by the industry, for the industry’s own tastes; so from a passion, it becomes a routine, something you must learn to live with and strive for, to leave an impact in a place where everything is consumed without appreciating it for it’s true value. Feeling trapped with no way out by a choice that’s already made, as you’re made to go on with things the way they are. “Starting days high” and “ending them low” as every day might be a chance for a new beginning, for finally changing things, but ending them just like every other day, serving the same purpose you were always meant to serve, “dying for the knife” that is.

the one thing mitski would always instill in every interviewer who spoke with her, was that she was creating art and she wanted people to ask her about it- not about her. there was also an interview (i think) with kexp where she speaks about making music and the realization that she almost doesn’t have a choice but to make it her career because she doesn’t feel like she can do anything else. i feel this song isn’t negative, it’s more a like her looking at her career now in a different light. OR it could be a persona she is going to encompass and will carry it out through other songs.
