I love this song a lot, and i keep thinking about how she sings that the freight train is a buffalo replaced. Back when settlers took over the land, They thought the Natives were savages, so they started killing buffalos in hopes that Native Americans wouldn’t be able to survive. Eventually buffalos almost went extinct, and over the large empty plains settlers started building railroad tracks as their main source of transportation instead of having to use buffalos. So she compares the sound of the train as a “replacement” to the sound of the buffalos running through the fields, and I think that’s beautiful ☹️❤️

Songs were always meant to be poetry. Almost all of the old songs are poetry sang instead of said with background sounds, it’s the new era that brought the “my dear diary” type of lyricism into music industry that barely needs any media literacy or thinking to understand. Simple and barely a song

@FreakLilBitchAntonia Жыл бұрын
@@gray.mongrel Same, lowkey I kind of see it as a feeling of hope. "I have a hope though she's blind with no name" and "sometimes I think it would be easier without her, but I know nobody can hurt me when I see her sleeping face" the buffalo might be a metaphor for hope but idk

So sorry I never checked the comments😭 A few years ago, my life was so chaotic. Honestly I can barely remember a single thing, and I went through the same motions every single day. But then I met someone who made my life make sense. Like there was a reason I went through the motions for so long, was to find her. And my entire world was so bright. And I can remember everything so clearly from when she came. But now she's gone, and I'm still here, and I don't know what I'm doing anymore. I feel like the strange, chaotic lyrics to this song, paired with the serene music speaks to my life in a way I can't explain fully.

I was living in Edinburgh last year, a city where i left a big chunk of my heart. This was the opening song for the Amateur Mistake tour, where i attended almost a year ago. Of course, in Edinburgh (Queens hall to be specific). Im now back in my hometown, drinking the tea I used to drink in Edinburgh and listening to this song that, like all of the tracks from The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, remind me of my time there. Thank u, Mitski.

god this song just speaks to me on so, so many levels, unlike any of her other songs. it just feels like mine, like it was written for me, not that im claiming it in any way though. i've lived in LA most of my life with just my mom but we always used to visit Yuma very frequently to see family. there were freight train tracks right next to the road we always took in and out of Arizona, i can still see the train rolling along the rails. sometimes we'd camp out in that barren area, there were so many nats and mosquitoes, and sometimes you'd hear the stoplights for the train crossing if you were close enough to the city, but god the glow of the moon and the stars was like nothing you'd ever get to see in California. i still hear all the country songs my great aunt and uncle would play in their house when we'd stay with them, while they were cooking a Mexican buffet for somebody's birthday party. i remember once visiting a historical park in Apache Junction, a tour guide taught us about the indigenous tribe that land used to belong to, he said if we were lucky we might see a bison around the plains, though i never saw one in that city. i started high school the year of covid, and we stopped visiting Arizona, and thanks to the virus inflation absolutely killed us and our living predicaments. i was always a little spoiled, and that hadn't quite subsided that year despite the situation, i'm sure raising me became close to a chore for my mom. the entirety of the second verse is often how i feel my mom felt, even before covid, about raising me, about growing up with me, because i know now in many ways she was still a kid too. i spent my last year of high school with my grandparents in Yuma and am starting college over here. i still remember the drive over here from Burbank; my great aunt and uncle have since moved to Mesa, so we don't get to see them as often. my Nana told me that the railroad tracks that used to run by the road had since been demoed, along with the shipping units the trains traveled between. but i looked out towards where i used to see the trains and in its place i saw a grown bison and its baby. it was the most magical thing ever. it wasn't something i held onto after visiting that park in Apache Junction, but it felt like a sign, or a message. and now so does this song, bringing everything, my entire life up till now full circle, it feels like everything is connected, and i'm still listening on loop after a year, i'm not sure i'll ever tire of this song

I disagree. Giving up on hope means you give up on helping and resign yourself to everything that happens. Hope is necessary for change, and you do have to be realistic, but there is nothing wrong with having faith
