The fifty-second episode of Boss Analysis.
There have been a fair few Bosses I Hate during the course of this series - for a change of pace, it's time to focus on a Boss I Love! (Possibly against my will!)
Video game heroes are a determined bunch, no matter what dangers they face, they simply refuse to back down and will do everything in their power to fight enemies and save the world.
Well, that is until they meet a particular type of boss that can manipulate them, potentially ruining the entire world in the process. In this edition of Boss Analysis, I discuss probably my favourite example of these from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin...

I only play with Charlotte so Astrate wasn't an issue. But since she is immune to most magic I just farm up the skeleton musketeers near her door. They give a spell where you can summon them and they deal weapon damage. And good damage at that.

Charming bosses? Siren from Darkest Dungeon is one of them. She'll charm one of your party for a turn and have them attack the rest of the party. Works regardless of gender.

He didn`t seem to mind it, until he started dabbling in the cosmic stuff. When the ancestor made a deal with the pelagic fishmen of the coves, he basically lured her to an idol, chained her to it and used her as a bargain chip/sacrifice for jewelry to fund his research. The poor girl drowned and turned into the siren, and the fishmen made her their queen.

Smash and Netflix have opened the gates so it's only a matter of time before Castlevania becomes something else from the lowest parts of the community and becomes a shell of it's former self, kinda like what the Netflix series is doing with the story... Only videos like this from people who are fans of the series can slow down that fate. At least Bloodstained is safe, for now.

Castlevania Netflix doesn't follow the source material too well, so I don't like it. Apparently some people are absolutely shocked when you tell them you don't like the series. They have this idea that it is the best show/movie adaptation of a video game and I disagree. The reason is probably because a lot of people don't really care for Castlvania that much... if more people did, less people would like that netflix seires honestly.

In Persona games, the charm status is extremely deadly there not just because your allies may attack each other, but because they can use healing spells on the enemy. The final boss of Persona 3 can charm a healer in your party, then the charmed healer uses a full heal spell on the boss. And said final boss is a LONG fight normally, so that's a lot of progress suddenly all for naught.

I don't think it has anything to do with a character's baseline sexual orientation. The whole point of being "charmed" is that you fall in love with the enemy against your own will.

One of the big Charmer bosses in Dragon Quest is Morag from 9, who's able to puff puff any of your party members, regardless of gender. She isn't too hard to beat if you know what you're doing, though. Also special mention goes to the Sirens in DQ8 when they attempt a puff puff on Jessica, where she will always win due to being better endowed.

Another “charmer” boss from DQ is in DQ8, in the post-game dungeon Memories Lane (3DS). Here, Evil Jessica in Memoriam will often use an ability basically equivalent to a puff-puff, but will paralyze any male members of the party for a few turns. Having both Jessica and Red in your party is essential to beating the boss. Additionally, a “charmed” boss (so to speak) from the same game (and dungeon) would be Captain Crow in Memoriam; in the three times that I battled him, he would be charmed by Jessica about every other turn or so; it was a little ridiculous.

There is a charmer boss in Final fantasy tactics advance, a game I'm surprised isn't on this channel, it's a mix of Final fantasy an vandal hearts, The charmer boss Charmed my entire team except for Marche, an he had to wallop my entire team an the boss by himself, it wasn't really fun but I won nonetheless.

While not technically a "Charmer Boss", in Splatoon 1, your playable character is a 14 year old Inkling named Agent 3 because Nintendo didn't want the NPC's to have to call you your Nintendo account name. As you go through the campaign, you might get attached because she is your playable character, and courtesy of Splatoon being a shooter, is very vulnerable to enemy attacks, with basic Octotroopers able to kill in 2-3 hits if you are unarmored. Fast forward to Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion endgame, and she is controlled by the main antagonist and pit against you in a 1v1 desperate bid to stop you escaping to the surface of Inkopolis!

Ah, I remember Astarte. Since I rarely ever used the "Talk" feature in PoR's pause menu, I didn't even know there was special dialogue for if Jonathan was hit by Astarte's "charm" technique. Without using a guide, I pretty much figured out most of the game by aimlessly wandering, all those years ago on my very first playthrough. It's also nice to hear that you're still using *Meteos* music, whoisthisgit! Now that's a nostalgia-trip.

In Icewind Dale 2 charm doesn't work very long on any character. But the nightmare begins, if paladin in your party sees charmed character... Of course, he will try to kill him/her. Worst part of it - he will try to kill that character even AFTER Charm wears out!

Honestly, the whole 'woman no man can resist' trope is so annoying because it implies that the writers / game designers either forgot about gay men / asexual people or they're implying that the woman is SO gorgeous that it even makes gay / asexual people like them... which, no. That's not how that works. Also they like, forget lesbians exist with that trope too? It could be interesting if it was explored more in games. Like Sylvando from Dragon Quest *sometimes* being affected by the seducing moves but also not, implying that he's most likely bisexual. It adds depth to the gameplay and makes the characters more interesting too, having to strategize which characters are weak to what 'charming' moves to know when to defend / etc.

Not a Charmer boss per se, but back when I played World of Warcraft, there was a boss in the Burning Crusade in the Shadow Labyrinth called Blackheart the Inciter. He was a two-headed ogre mage who had an ability called Incite Chaos. When he used it, you and your party would lose control of their characters and they would run around attacking each other briefly.

I can think of a few more bosses that use the Charm effect. You probably know about Fiore "Why Did Braev Hire This Guy" DeRosa, a Red Mage without the stylish hat who may be a future topic of discussion. Charm is a staple in D&D, with the effect making its victim friendly toward the caster, and the boss I'll discuss here is from Dungeons & Dragons Online. But he doesn't use it on you, he uses it to turn NPCs against the party. Dariel is a boss in the quest "Partycrashers". He's a Tiefling wizard, disguised as an elf named "Malior d'Phiarlan", out to attack the House Phiarlan gala and kill the Viceroy with his own brainwashed guards. He's one of three assassins you can detect before telling Cyan the coast is clear, and you get bonus experience for killing him early, and even more bonus experience for not killing any of the guards. If you detect him early at the party and use Bluff or Intimidate to bait Dariel into the library, you can safely kill him in there; it's best to use single target attacks on him. The guards aren't immune to effects like Hold, Hypnotic Pattern, or a Bard's Fascinate song, so using them can make it easier to spare their lives. In the Epic version of the quest, any arcane spellcasters and Bards can set up Otto's Sphere of Dancing, which is even better. If you don't kill Dariel then, he shows up in the end fight, along with any other assassins you didn't kill. If you didn't take out the Tieflings in the private rooms either, you can very quickly be overwhelmed by sheer weight of numbers. Aside from his Charmed guard minions, Dariel isn't that interesting; he's a typical caster boss, throwing attack spells as well as Hypnotism and Hypnotic Pattern. He resists Electricity and Fire a bit, but not enough to justify changing up what spells or weapons you use. He can also cast Blur, so characters with melee or ranged attacks will find True Seeing helpful to avoid that pesky 20% miss chance. He's classified as an "orange named" Mini boss, so he can be affected by status, and even "save-or-die" effects like Phantasmal Killer- which Wizards may have already! As a caster, he likely has higher Will saves, but lower Fortitude and Reflex.

I always hate charm spells: I can live with things like poison, paralyze, fire, etc, but having my character lose control and kill himself through no fault of my own is maddening. Earthbound had the worst example: having to go back through a tunnel with my controls constantly changing to be healed.

Another Charm Boss that is worth mentioning is Ishtar from SMT Strange Journey Redux. She has two Moves that can cause charm and another move that kills anyone that is charmed , which also replenishes her health depending on how much HP the victims had.

What I did differently though was that before I entered Astarte's room I removed all of Johnathan's gear and then just play as Charlotte (which I always did anyway). I know that sounds kinda dumb, but that was the best strategy I could think of back in the day.

Regarding "charming bosses" there's the Ancient Devil from Golden Sun:Dark Dawn, it can use an attack called Devil Sign that allows him to bring one of you characters on its side, a pretty nasty superboss that can also attack twice per turn and loves spamming the Haures summon that can inflict the poison status and deals lots of damage.

Dragon Quest 9 has an early boss called Morag that is capable of using puff puff on any party member, but the effect is merely losing a turn because at this point, your adventure has just started. 11's Dora-in-Grey, however, doesn't have such a restriction: her signature charm works on everyone, 100% of the time. In fact, her AI is programmed to target Sylvando, who is the only party member that can remove it without breaking a sweat. The worst charm boss in Dragon Quest was retroactively added in 8's 3ds port: Jessica in memoriam. Her puff puff has been upgraded to always work on male characters. This seems like a good time to mention that 4 out of 6 playable characters in the game are male. And you're not allowed to have a party smaller than 4 members. And she's a boss you unlock by beating the game's original superboss, so the rest of her moves aren't weaker to compensate for the fact that half your party's trying to kill you. Aside from DQ, the only charm oriented bosses are Persona 4's Kunino Sagiri, who can charm three members of your party at the same time (which isn't fun at all) and Bravely Default/Second's Ba'al Turtle Dove, who has a unique charm spell that causes a party member to fall so madly in love with another that they'll use the same moves as them (which makes for an interesting battle)

When I heard Jeljel's win theme, I was expecting the Jeljel lose theme afterwards. I knew this was special when I heard Mekks' win theme. Also, Mekks has the longest win theme in Meteos DS, with about 8 seconds, and Boggob has the shortest, at only 2 seconds.

Whitney is also located earlier in the game where your Pokemon choices are limited, in Claire's case it isn't that hard to over power her with brute force by that point since you have fully evolved pokemon and can easily get powerful pokemon as well.

@@EsoiTheGrumpyMawile Not true in the slightest. There aren't any easy ways to catch up to her in levels since the levels on wild pokemon are pathetically low at that point. There's also no easy way to get the type advantage since your only options are getting a Kingdra via trade(not available to everyone) and a Dragonite from the Dratini available at the game corner(takes an exhausting amount of grinding for the coins & the levels).

The original Gen 2 had massive difficulty spikes when it came to gym leaders, it's one thing they fixed for the remakes because it was so tedious and annoying.

@@kiwikarp9509 I stand by my point, yeah overleveling is a chore in gen 2 for the reasons you said but powerful pokemon can still give you an edge, a luxury not easily afforded for the Whitney fight. I'd like to point out that Claire is still one of the harder fights in the series, It's just that Whitney gets mentioned more for good reason, it's also why Lenora is also considered a hard fight (though in her case you can get Sawk or Throh to make the fight easier).

Dragon Quest 6 and 7 allows you to use Puff-Puff by male characters and it's a damaging move scaled by level.

I beat the boss with both chars. However, for Jonathan, I use mastered Shuriken instead. His subweapon will get stronger the more you use them. Mastered Shuriken not only deal more dmg, but also 2 more shurikens to throw, and it's super fast. The moment I use it, Astarte alreade took all 4. Not to mention, the higher you jump, the more range it can cover. Of course, it's super hard to use in airborne enemies. As for Charlotte, I can just keep the distance and use Gale Force (all wind spell deal slash dmg. It still scale with her INT, but deal physical dmg afterward).

A charmer boss that I know is one from Marvels Ultimate Alliance 1 where you fight one of Thors enemies (Enchantress I believe) and she charms one of your characters into fighting your group. It wasn't the most interesting fight to me though when it comes to that world level as the way you beat Loki is interesting.

I am currently playing Portrait of ruin for the 1st time, and I`m at Astarte RN, trying to beat her as Jonathan 1st (without switching into Charlotte even to avoid the charming), it feels easy until she sends out the charming attack *right* when you`re in a position where its almost unavoidable. Beating her as Charlotte is easy mostly due to her slow strut, just fully charge up a spell with good range and decent damage till she comes near you, then blast it onto her once she is in range and quickly run away before her attacks hit you (Personally I have poisonous bubbles RN and its working wonders on bosses & enemies alike, and it works on Astarte quite well too). But as Jonathan.... hitting her and avoiding her attacks is not too hard, but that charm attack mostly comes out right at the worst moments.

My opinion of Astarte....... Frustrating. I mainly used Jonathan for fighting, and barely used Charlotte (R.I.P). However, this boss made this annoying, because of it's mechanic to charm Jonathan. I Ree at the thought of Astarte all the time.

There's other games where gender has an effect, such as Ultros only targeting female with single target Tentacle attack in FF VI or trolls in Dragon's Dogma being excited at the view of a woman (or a man for their DLC variant)

Usually the charmer foe has magic powers that force people to work for them against their will, but in a more grounded fight I'd imagine that to be a possibility. The joke would get old pretty soon though, since the gag is kinda just "they're gay." Good for a game mechanic, however!
