A series about frightening moments or events that can't be covered with Creepy Bad Endings or Creepy Time Limits.
They say that there's nothing scarier than the unknown, and the first RPG I ever played, Secret of Mana, was scary to me in more ways than one, and that is the topic for the tenth episode of Creepy Moments.
The early segments of most RPGs can be unnerving. When you don't know the game too well, death may be lurking around each and ever corner, and in some cases, even when you're more experienced, the start could well be the most difficult and trying section of the entire adventure..

Specifically calm or neutral death though. As opposed to the keres, who kind of feasted on the bodies of those who were violently killed. I vaguely recall reading about thanatos being to do with a kind of blessed death, as in relief from suffering, but I can't recall what his counterpart was if that is the case.

The main character being kicked out of their hometown, and treated like dirt during it, really bummed me out ever since i was a little kid, who had to have pretty much everything explained to me.(Firstly due to being too young to read, and secondly, english not even being my first tongue)

Not sure if you know this, but there actually is a way to get the girl much earlier in the game and skip past the two werewolf fight. Around the forest area where you get kicked out of Potos village, there's a sign that says "Beware of Goblins" or something like that. If you examine it and continue on your way, you'll get attacked by a pair of goblins. A cutscene happens and the girl shows up to help you out, but she doesn't join you just yet. Later on, when you visit the castle at Pandora, another scene will happen and the girl will join you. There you go, two characters, now the game's slightly less difficult, and you don't have to face the werewolves alone later on.

You're welcome. Trust me and git when we tell you the early game is all sorts of hell for first-timers, so being able to get all three characters (and skipping the two werewolf encounter) as soon as possible is a big blessing. I highly recommend getting the girl first, though it is kinda tedious going back and forth from one dungeon to another.

Other thing: head to Gaia's Navel before going to the Haunted Forest. She'll stick around instead of running off, and you'll see you need magic or something to progress, meaning you'll have to go there anyway. Plus, a couple extra levels never hurt, especially against nasty enemies.

Oh man, secret of Mana. I remember when I first played this. I didn't know how OP magic was, end only used Undine's healing Magic the whole game. Can you imagine how hard it is for someone who's playing for the first time to beat the game almost without using magic at all? Some bosses on the late game just took forever to beat. and Mana Beast... Mana Beast was a nightmare, I almost lost my sanity trying to beat it. I still don't know how I managed to complete that game.

I used magic, but I made another mistake that was possibly even worse: never buying or equipping armour, so every enemy would rip my characters to shreds. But because I didn't understand RPG basics, I just thought it was meant to be that way, and that armour did "nothing, so there's no point wearing it". I remember Lime Slime in particular being an absolute nightmare to beat.

At least I did equip the armours and stuff. I was thinking of reservim my MP for the bosses, the thing is, magics get stronger by using it all the time on this game, because of that my magic power was very weak, and I didn't know why, so I stopped using it after some point. the only magic that I really used from start to finish was Undine's healing spell. And guess what, Sprite is useless without his magic attacks, hooray. But still, not wearing armor, specially if you didn't do much level grinding, it sure must have been tough on you.

My first play through back in the 90's was the exact opposite: I always hated that fight against the tiger the most, because it's the only serious boss you have to beat without magic. The others from there on you can essentially stun-lock indefinitely by using spells back to back.

Yeah, some of the English names are clearly lazy in their own way. I liked the "German" names a lot better, for example, Undine was called Aquaria. Just to add, Spiked Tiger is called "Kuscheltiger", which roughly translates to "Snuggle Tiger".

On the topic of Secret of Mana, I tried playing the sequel once, (whatever it's called) but I didn't like it much at all and barely got anywhere. I hated the way your characters would move slower when they got near to an enemy, making it almost impossible to avoid attacks. This one thing ruined the entire game for me, although from what I heard from my brother who played it for much longer, it had a lot of other problems that I wouldn't have been able to tolerate either. But I have been thinking about possibly giving the game another chance, this time with either Kevin or Angela as the main character. (For particular video purposes) For anyone that has played the game already, what would be the best team of characters with either of those two as leader? Because I don't want to accidentally create a bad trio and be stuck with it the entire adventure, and potentially suck out more fun from the experience.

You'll probably want Carlie in the group for the healing. If you go with Angela, then Duran, Kevin or Hawk would be good melee offensive backups for her. Anyway, there is hardly a non-viable group in the game. Duran is a very straight-forward strong fighter and having him will make everything manageable, even if in a boring way. Also "light" or "dark" class evolution paths have no effect on the story, so just choose whatever has the skills/stats you're more interested in. When I first played the game I was also weirded out about having to enter some sort of battle mode when close to enemies, which was proven by SoM to be unecessary. But I didn't find it nearly bad enough to ruin the game for me, and after eventually getting used to it I came to love this game as one of the best on the platform.

In regard to Kevin and Angela, having them on the same party is almost always good, especially if you go Light/Dark Kevin in class changing. Choose Angela as your main character though due to her magic she can be ridiculously strong, and her final dungeon contians a gut wrenching secret boss.But I'd say try whomever you like, the only "bad" match up is having Carlie and Duran, only because they could get the same abilities unless Carlie goes down the "dark" path.I myself love the game and replayed it a bit too many time.

i'd personally recommend Picking Angela as the Main Hero (She is very magic proficient for offensive spells) With Duran as the secondary Hero (For he can tank the ever living crap out of Enemies) and Carlie as your Third Hero (Simply because the third Hero normally doesn't join until a bit into the game but Carlie is a special case as she joins shortly after your second hero does and is probably the best Character in the game due to her being such a good healer and a very good combat unit in the late game too. Never and i mean NEVER create a Party with Carlie and NOT put her in the third slot. It just makes the game unnecessarily more tedious for a while

Secret of Mana was also one of my first JRPGs. My brother and I had a hard time with it when we were younger, and we never got beyond Gaia's Navel/ Haunted Forest. Many more years of RPG experience helped us out there (and the Switch remaster since our SNES or the cartridge one would erase saves after a while.) We thankfully have gotten farther, but it'll always have a soft spot in my heart.

Great video, man! I like it how you put lots of effort into your video, and not only critique the creepiness factor of an individual game, but critique the game itself as well (sometimes, depending on the video). I am a huge fan, and I would like to mention something. I have a recommendation for you as another Creepy Bad Limit. You have mentioned Wario Land before. In Wario Land 4, within the levels, you are set with a time limit, and sometimes, there are other obstacles that stop you. During the time limit, as your time decreases, the background/music starts to become ominous, and if the time limit is completely depleted, you will start to lose all of your treasure and money, as it will drain in seconds. When your money is fully drained, Wario is hit by text, as a reminder that "Time's Up!" The background then cuts to black, and Wario falls through an area with a colourful background (epilepsy warning), where it shows him losing the treasure within the world that he is in, which is required to reach the world's boss. After, he returns back to the world, with all the levels left back unfinished, and his money completely wasted. Oh man, this game. It is my first ever RPG and I love it so much. I personally didn't have much trouble with this game (aside from a certain volcano *cough* cough*), but then again, I made it a point to powerlevel so much lol. I'm pretty sure I had everything at 99 and all weapons at 8.99 by the end of the game. Perhaps I should replay it and try not to level that much, Then again, Magic is still insanely OP.

Are you talking about "Lufia" or "Lufia 2 - Rise of the Sinistrals"? Because that's another series with confusing international meaning. In addition, the first game starts where the second game ends, so the time line is even a bit more confusing compared to Zelda & Co. Lufia (2) is great IMO, but it's no typical ARPG and even more turn based than your typical Final Fantasy game. Once you understood that, it's not bad (and has one of the best soundtracks on the SNES).

Secret of Mana, my bro. and I played the game together, my bro. was the main character and I the girl, the third character was the AI, we got a lot of fun with the game overall and If I had a multitap, I could have played the game with my two brothers in a three player cooperative RPG style, this is one of the games that you want the other two characters be controlled by an actual player.

even when SoM is considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time you can tell how dated it's systems are today, although I respect it attempted to be a real time RPG with independent ally AI in such a time. I tried to play it early this year and couldn't get pass the forest as those werewolves are glitchy as hell and I got stuck

Well, I'd say the opposite. While there is some (optional) grinding involved, the game never really forces you into doing so and for a game of that time it's pace is really well designed. I remember reading a review in Germany's Club Nintendo magazine back then where they estimated one playthrough without using the guide to be around 80 hours, which I think is actually true. And that's really 80 hours of gameplay and stuff, not grinding or padded content. There are really few areas in the game where you're forced to backtrack and most dungeons are diverse enough to not "get old" too fast. As for the Werewolves: I never liked these either. Just go to Pandora's Castle first to meet the girl again, who'll join your party (which is also mentioned in this video). Once that's done you'Re able to skip that annoying fight in the woods. Also the woods and the witch's castle are both a lot easier if you equip the highest accessible armor available. This is actually the only place where I'd say grinding pays off. After that most stuff can be done back to back, if you want to, without any heavy grinding involved.

Smaxx it's just that I got the girl in my party and the other thing, got to a narrow passage and got combo'd to death by the werewolves, this happened 3 times, my AI partners either got themselves killed by the wolves or just got stucked in the enviorment, I just got frustated and quitted mainly because I had been told this was an amazing game and confused it with Illusion of Gaia which I played years ago and enjoyed it a lot so I had little reason to keep playing.

Talking about the game taking away your partners, i have been playing shin megami tensei 1 on the snes and boy does the game really likes doing that, its even worse since my character kinda sucks and 3 demons just doesnt cut it.

I remember my first reaction when I got the game back in '96 or so: I unpacked the game and before starting I just read a bit in the guide book that was included regarding the background story: Monsters appear since the boy pulls a sword out of a stone. And my first thought was: Can't you just leave it there? Problem? Solved!
