Boss Analysis # 16

The sixteenth episode of Boss Analysis.
Breath of Fire II has a number of tough bosses, but few can match up in difficulty to Barubary, and if you decide to defeat him with just Ryu, he becomes the toughest boss, by far.
I've never been able to defeat him this way before, but all that changes with this episode; learn how to end your feud with the massive demon once and for all!

Semi-honorable. I suppose we could view Ray as an honorable bad guy too. But I prefer to think of him as a lost soul. Many great games have such an honorable villian. Rubicant Final in Fantasy 2 or 4 if you will. General Leo in Final Fantasy 3 or 6 if you will. The Turks in Final Fantasy 7.

Brutal fight, and probably not worth taking solo except for bragging rights. There's a novelization of this game called War of the Demons that really gives Barubary an epic battle scene, as well as backstory as the first demon ever.

Hello. I just finished this game yesterday. When i fighted him I made a research about this boss. Barubary gets a boost of double ATK when he has less than 1000HP. So the best strategy is calculate his remining HP and use G-Drag to finish him off. Using Roast helps a LOT, i had 3 WiseBL items that i was saving through the entire game, so my strategy was G.Drag -> WiseBL -> Roast -> GDrag until i defeated it. (and of course luck of not getting more damage that i could withstand)

Actually, I find old scaly to be much easier in a1 on 1 fight. His true power is hitting multiple people at once, which means having to heal everyone. Fighting him solo takes away that advantage.

I think Barubary knows the truth that his world is already gone unlike Deathevn, who can't let go, so once he sees the apsrk in Ryu to actually succeed he helps him the only way he can by making him strong enough to destroy anything. And calling him his nightmare as well as giving you the LifeBR the flipside to death. I think he knows he's just a dream.

Late answer, but no. Remember the dragon tear that has different colors? Well, the black color, in barubary, means that he hate Ryu. He may have some codes, but he still wants to kill him and bring back the demon world.

The regular attack being the strongest is not really that strange. Magic was terrible in BoF II. Most spells only did a fixed amount of damage, and the MP recovery items were either very rare or very bad.

This guy is the enemy who mae me realize Ryu's Great Dragon attack only deal 999 damage with AP bar full. Guess who entered this dungeon with only items that heal 20 AP... After the first attack the combat devolved into a slugfest. Thankfully I had a good stock of healing items since I spent a lot of time level grinding in the monster island.

Its been a long time since I've played and finished this game and can offer an alternative to trying to getting rare drops that increase almost any stats permanently. The only thing it requires you to have is a lot of money and make sure you picked to have the town with the restaurant(regular looking houses),its the very thing you want for increasing stats permanently. You need to buy various items such as Shave Ice,Frizbee F.Spice from Guntz,buy as much as you could afford to. Simply take them to Hometown and take them to the cook and they'll be used as part of recipes to raise 3 different stats. There's other stuff you can use to cook to increase other stats but the two that can't be done is of course HP/MP. I recall having Nina smacking stuff around for over 200+ and its a joke on the mobs to get it on the receiving end. So,you can predict it to be walk in the park to solo Barubary more easier then before with your main character dishing over 500+ each turn,with buffs and won't even need to use G.Dragon.

+Victor Delisle 16-bit values have a maximum of 65536. Basically any game that is 16-bit has a maximum storage value of 65536, so it's not surprising. (For 8-bit like the NES it would be 256). If you really want to work out the maximum values for each amount of bits yourself you can just do 2 to the power of the number of bits to get the value.

keep note that he's fighting barubary at level 39, in which case the fight will become easier if your level for Ryu is higher than 39.

This is probably mentioned on a comment-thread, but I didn't find it through ctrl+f, so here it goes a hint about WiseBLs: - You can craft them by buying 2 tuna, combining with a F spice (to create a Vitamin), then combining 2 more tuna to the resulting Vitamin to create a WiseBL. - Sometimes the WiseBL cooking process will fail, even if you did everything right, so tough luck if you end with a couple Charcoals. - To easily achieve this, you need the fisherman NPC and the cooking carpenter in Township, and access to Guntz (via birb or flying town),

Ignoring in-game numbers and stuff, I imagine the reason why the normal slash attack Barbuary uses is the strongest because it means the most to Ryu (Also being as big as he is, a punch is probably more effective than breath). When Ryu was a kid, Barbuary swatted him away like he was a toy. Using that same attack does not only physical damage, but emotional. That, or he's just a big ol' punchy demon boy.

Ok, to be totally honest I cheesed this fight. I was at least near lvl 60, and since I got Township to fly, I made a bunch of WisBLs, three full stacks of Roasts, used four uses of G.Dragon, and a single regular attack. I just had to PWN him after our first meeting though.

I'd already gotten used to grinding by the time I played BoFII, and I REALLY had to kick the crap out of him. I also had full dragon armor and the Empire Sword. With all of my prep work it was maybe 7 turns, I may have had to heal twice because he missed a lot. I also did the fight solo, not with a party. I prefer this kind of hard boss over FF's idea of, moderately difficult boss with LITERALLY ONE MILLION health. Even if I decide to be evil and ruin it by over preparing.

Defeated him as Ryu alone today. Didn't prepare for the fight and only just now watched this video. I feel pretty good about myself now. My Ryu was about level 46 and I got through by managing my WiseBLs, Roasts and using G.Dragon at the right times. I missed Ryu's best armor in the last dungeon though.

Minimum level 42. Easiest area to level up is the island northwest of Windia with the giant monsters. You'll get stacks of extracts-- more than enough for the fight

It's funny, in terms of plot, Deathevan does a lot more horrible things than Barubary but yet despite that, we still end up hating Barubary a lot more due to his treatment of Ryu at the beginning of the game. Honestly, I actually think Barubary is better as a villain than Deathevan is.

Mmmm...I don't know, it depends a lot on if you are also invested in the other characters' story, Nina is my favorite character, and after what happened to Mina that makes me hate both DeathEvan and Habaruku way more than Barubary, also add what happened with Ray, Tiga, Claris, Daisy and even finding Ganer in that machine. Barubary as cool as it is doesn't do much. Granted that despite DeathEvan being present in name since the beginning of the game, he only appears physically until the end, but if we go about best villain of the game, that title goes pretty much to Habaruku.

+DAOW17 The eyes have high defence, so it's better to use magic spells against them instead. Try to kill the eye that uses Cure 3 first. Use the dragon puppies instead of the stronger ones, so you don't kill Ganer. Be careful not to use two attacks on an eye and the first one kills it, because the second attack may hit Ganer and kill him.

Took me a long time to kill that beetle demon when i was playing the game, i feared to get a very bad ending (sadly, i got the bad ending anyway, killed Ryus dad because i was close do die and used dragon spells), when i fight him alone, so i didn´t tried it. I've beaten Barubary solo years back. Probably coz I leveled to 40 or something, and I always heal using guts. It was a headache and a half that took me around 10 minutes. But it felt so satisfying to beat him.

What I like from old games (especially gba), despite having pixilated graphic (through using "despite" might be wrong since I like pixilated games), it was the story and character building. Barubary on BoF2 was one of a tons of RPG game bosses that seems like guiding the main char. I like this kind of boss. And I think you're not really hate him through (in story not in battle). At the 1st time facing him as little Ryu, he really are spare your life and let you become strong enough to face him. He might be on the antagonist side, and really are into killing Ryu, but when he beaten, he was like admitted he's wrong and not struggling to win, well something like that I guess. If play a lot of RPG games especially in old console Nintendo (like gba), you'll find at least 1 bosses like this.

I have a theory about barose (the man in gandaroofs dream world who invites u to be in ur town which he somehow knows about) actually being barubary bcuz at the start of the game he is a dark dragons tear which he has evil intentions which makes sense but when u talk to barose in ur town if u answer his questions properly it can also go to black but he is an old man so maby he’s disguised as barubary bcuz i cant see him as any other demon

Balbaroy (or "Barubary," seriously did the translator only had two hours to localize the game?!!) is such an underdeveloped character. He could have been portrayed as a cool villain, a handsome-looking honor-bound bad guy with a human form (to include a third eye on his forehead) worthy of praise. But no, they made him just an honor-bound monster.

If you think you had it bad, look at things my way. I had no choice but to beat him alone. If I fought him with the rest of the team, once he died, he would stay in the way, dead, preventing me from continuing. I had to restart and fight him again and alone. I guess it was a glitch, but didn't know, so I always fought him alone.

I thought a regular playthrough with near zero grinding and backtracking (unless necessary) would pit you at around level 42 or something when you fight Barubary, not 39. And that's if you didn't grind, atleast overtly, since y'know backtracking needs to be done at certain point, and that's just extra battles. I didnt have much trouble with Barubary, even without G.Drag or Party members. Likely because i'm usually around level 56 or something by then, courtesy of my ocd like tendency to try to read EVERY SINGLE DIALOGUE AND IT'S VARIATIONS POSSIBLE IN THE GAME. It gave me enough health to make me NOT dead in 2 rounds, but rather around 3-4 rounds, which was enough to get decent attacks in and also heal. BE in mind, i didn't got the EmpireSD back then, so it wasn't the best damage dealer, but it worked atleast! Also used no items other than the couple (i think 2) WiseBL, and healed with the Cure2 that Ryu learns, since might as well use the MP, if not using the dragons. Talking from my first and general run perspective, wasn't trying a challenge, just to feel cool i guess, after the buttstomping the actual dungeon itself gave me with it's god terrifying encounter rate and monsters. But i could be wrong. It''s been years, and i need to play it again.

Forgetting, no, denying, that they have already lost twice. Myria is one hell of a bitch. The Holy Order of Dragons cannot be defeated by her lesser power. And yet, she refuses to yield. Time and time again. Pride. The devil incarnate. That's why she takes the form of Alice (Truth) in the first game, in the second, a masculine demon, and a motherly serpent with angel wings in the third. A motherly presence. But a lie. As always, the author of fear, a lie. And Ryu shows up with his friends to expose it. These stories are quite profound.

It's my first playthrough on the Switch. i really shot myself in the foot w/o realizing it back in Capitan.....i killed my would be chef while evacuating the cave now for me its one big power struggle with Barb on those shitty WFruits Also my dumb comfortable ass thought Knight Jean was another BoF1 Agni dragon because his chop move was 999 hp multi insta kill made Infinity more tolerable....nope. +329link I have been wanting to make a Boss Analysis about DR3, because I really like seven deadly sin psychopaths. The bosses in the game are a bit too easy once you get to a decent level, though, so I'll try to kill them all without using any level up points. (Basically staying at level 1)
