Bad endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

I always interpreted that the reason Dracula doesn't transform is that he's saving his power for a Belmont. Though, he doesn't know that they've vanished, so he's saving power for nothing. He also isn't taking Shanoa seriously at all, given that he doesn't seem hurt at all by the time the fight is over, which means he's just playing around during this fight. To him, Shanoa is just some random lady who walked into his castle and challenged him, and why should he take her seriously if there's no whip to be afraid of?

Like Dracula said before the fight, they are just "dancing" from his perspective. As long as he's humored, he'll continue to play along, but as soon as he grow bored, a single serious spell is enough to put an end to everything. He don't transform because he don't need to, but again he wasn't expecting his own power to be used against himself.

The bad news is that you _still_ have to deal 9999 damage (and you can't use the Dominus Union in the Boss Rush mode, or you'll just kill yourself).

And this right here is the answer as to why he wasn't fighting "seriously" (he clearly never does, give his constant laughter in every boss fight he's in ever), his only nemesis, weakness, is that stupid whip, so even though Shanoa is the strongest hero in the entire series and leagues above any Belmont, to Drac she's nothing but a minor nuisance.

@@uandresbrito5685 no, he was a normal man that did in fact create Ecclesia to purge Dracula once and for all, but once he was brought the Dracula Vessel to study (which is mentioned in the opening, after eclessia grew in power) then he became consumed by Dracula's influence (you can see this process after you defeat Barlowe, a black smoke appears from the vessel and drives him even more insane) I mean it makes sense when you realize the damn thing is on his main room, the Japanese script was clearer with this stuff for what I remember though, the English ver paints him as evil for evil's sake

To be fair, according to the various wikis, while we still don't have the 1999 game, we still know the plot as essentially: Julius Belmont goes to Japan and uses the sun gods there to fight the eclipse in which Dracula's Castle is sealed ... xD god what a B movie concept that is!

As to the "isn't this the 5th time someone other than the belmont's beat dracula?" comment, I believe this game takes place around 1810, about a decade or so after Symphony of the night, which makes Shanoa the first non-Belmont, non-Dracula's son person to vanquish dracula, even if it didn't last too long.

@@ianleather5699 It wouldn't make sense for the N64 games to be canon, as Reinhardt Schneider wields the Vampire Killer during the 1800s, yet the Belmonts' whereabouts are unknown (aside from the ones in Wygol Village), and there's no indication of a relation to the Morris clan (the keepers for the 200 years between Richter and Julius). Circle of the Moon was never meant to be canon, unlike Legends, which had to be tossed out in order to avoid conflicts with canon (specifically, Alucard's mere existence in that game conflicts with Dracula's Curse and, more importantly, Symphony of the Night, as Lisa's death was shortly before Trevor set out to put Dracula down).

Back in 2009 when I played this game, it wasn't the fact that Dracula started walking that scared me the most. It was seeing him using that circular slashing kick! So not only can Shanoa use Geese Howard's Reppuken though the Pneuma glyph, now Dracula can use Rugal Bernstein's Genocide Cutter?! SNK Playmore had a hand in this game, didn't it? Would surely account for both those references and the difficulty spike!

@@MrDmoney156 Spoiler alert: There's a giant mutant army heading to devastate the region and take control of the wastelands. As in-game time pass, more and more settlements fall to them, their lifeless remainders visible when they used to be your typical RPGs hub towns. For the bad ending, you can surrender to "The Master" or his lieutenant, getting you turned in a super mutant and assisting to the destruction of the vault you came from. Even with the low-res (it was the late 90's), the video of your guy being thrown into a vat can be quite disturbing.

What would you say are the "wrong reasons" for this game's difficulty? I do remember a couple of bosses being a bit jank/awkwardly-made, but aside from that I think it's generally fair. The "Level 1, Hard Mode, New Game" *is* pretty insane, probably the hardest thing in Metroid-styled Castlevania (aside from Circle of the Moon's Battle Arena, IMO), at least the first 2/3 of the game, but also really fun x) 9:59 Huh, never noticed that Shanoa's tatoos glowed outside of her specific "absorption" animation. 14:05 I wonder how obnoxiously long that slideshow can be, if you miss the maximum amount of Villagers possible? x) Both of Barlowe's VAs must have had an ABSOLUTE BLAST voicing him, his crazy laughs are AMAZING, do yourself a favor and listen to them, both languages! :D The True, bittersweet ending hits differently nowadays, with how Castlevania's been these days.

Also, Dawn of Sorrow showed the answer to 2nd bad ending. 24:25 lmfao, dat Castlevania 2 reference! 26:02 uhm, I think it'd make sense if Death recognized ppl from Eclessia clan, especially Barlowe. Unlike previous entries where you defeated Dracula and happy ending afterward, this game doesn't. It just feels sad when even after she fulfilled the "fake" mission, she still has nothing left. Hope she find a place to live on that village. One last note since you mentioned its difficulty. I think it's hard not because of how strong enemies and how weak Shanoa is. I think it's due to the Glyph and attribute mechanics. Her main attack didn't work the same way we used to accustom. Instead of using Knife and Axe like subweapon as they used to be, they can be used as main weapon in the game. Not to mention, the more you use them, the more its attribute increase, resulting more dmg.

Personally, I find the process of finding the good ending to these games can be a bit annoying, so I think I would enjoy the game showing me that I did a specific thing wrong instead of giving me no signs on how I was wrong. Then again, I would also find it annoying that I have to replay the game to get the good ending unless I had the foresight (but not the knowledge) to see that a bad ending was coming at that point.

Hello, I have a Creepy Time Limit idea you could discuss! In the game Legend of Zelda: the Minish Cap, this happens in Dark Hyrule Castle where an extraction ceremony is taking place. The main antagonist Vaati is atop this corrupted castle, and is draining the light force from Princess Zelda who had been turned to stone. Later in the dungeon when you pass the door locked by the Big Key, Vaati will announce that his ceremony is coming to a close, and in three bell chimes he'll become god-like and Zelda will be no more. As you make your way towards Vaati to stop him, two bells will ring as you pass through the upcoming room doors. But when you enter the room with the three Darknuts which triggers the second bell ring; this will initiate a hidden time limit in which Link must beat the Darknuts and make it to the top of the castle before the third and most crucial bell rings. If Link is unable to do so in time; the ceremony will be completed, Vaati will proceed to unleash his newfound power, Zelda will perish, and it will be Game Over. Link must make it to the top of the castle in time and interrupt the extraction ceremony to avoid this fate. Since this was my first Zelda final boss experience it was extremely nerve racking for me, so it would be cool to see you talk about this ^^

26:01 They already did that in Curse of Darkness, having him appear as a helpful ally only to reveal his true colors towards the end. He was only ever talkative with Alucard, Hector and Jonathan/Charlotte; all times when he was trying to manipulate them into doing something. The rest of the time, there's not much to say- he just wants to cut you down and claim your soul. Definitely the toughest Metroidvania of all with a simple but effective plot. Shame this was the final act in the saga.

Half the villagers were behind hidden walls, I find it as a tedious exploration trip when I played OoE myself. Even more tedious is that I couldn't even fight Death on my emulator, which is a requirement if you want to reach Dracula.

You can soft lock if instead of using dominus you fly in a corner. Dracula does his explosion for eternity. Also, I'm pretty sure jp voice is Norio Wakamoto, when he goes walking mode you can hear a very Norio-esque ASOBI OWARIDA.

The game over screen has a figure on the left side that kinda resembles Shanoa. Maybe it’s hinting that if Albus dies in that mode then Shanoa makes her sacrifice in the bad ending after finding his corpse with the glyphs? Or perhaps it’s his last thoughts being of his sister as he fades away? Either way the resemblance to Shanoa is hard to miss.

It's always struck me as odd how Dracula's humanoid form isn't consistent in each game it appears in, even the ones in the same platform. The closest thing I ever got to an answer was a video that claimed that he can take the body of a servant, which is how they explained how Dracula has so many transformations.

The second game's bad ending isn't much to write home about, but the first game's is, and despite not having a bad ending of its own, the spinoff Luminous Avenger iX is pretty important to be versed in, without saying too much. Just make sure that the voices are set to English (JP voice mode) in the settings if your version has them, the basic English mode leaves out a *ton* of dialogue in addition to changing the dialogue that's kept for the worse.

The ending could use a slight rewrite. Instead of writing off Ecclesia as being lost to time, it should have been Shanoa destroying all records of Ecclesia so that the knowledge of Dominus dies with her and therefore cannot be misused after her lifetime. They could have also trailed off into a cliffhanger and opened up an opportunity to create another Castlevania game taking place in 1897 depicting Quincy’s fight against Dracula instead of using Bram Stoker’s original novel to fill that gap.

You know a game is going to be VERY interesting if it has more than one unique Game Over screen or sequence. Another such game that comes to mind is Mega Man X: Command Mission. The Game Over screens change after the halfway point of the game, just like the Normal Battle music. Give it a chance if you can!

I haven't watched all creepy bad endings videos but I have thought of one from Tekken 2 which is Kazuya's ending. If you beat Tekken 2 as Kazuya, you'll get to witness him facing the devil version of himself. When the devil fires a laser to him, Heihachi got in the way and Kazuya used him as a shield, killing him in a process. After finishing off Devil with an uppercut, Kazuya emerges victory once again and this is where the creepy part begins. This shows that no one can stop him the fact that he is more corrupt than his father. The entire world will turn into a dystopia if Kazuya takes over the Mishima Zaibatsu. Tekken will never be the same without Heihachi

Yeah, that's pretty much what they're going for. That said, in hindsight, it's weird that he just leaves Shanoa to wake up with Mr. Crazy Laughs instead of trying to take her with him.

@@VonFirflirch My theory is that Albus was afraid that he'd be unable to beat Barlowe fast enough, and when Shanoa woke up, she'd team up with him, believing Albus was her enemy as well. Against both of them, he wouldn't stand a chance (he doesn't know yet that Shanoa lost her memories, as he acts surprised at her lack of skill when they meet again). He'd be killed/captured, and Barlowe and Shanoa would just carry on with the ritual afterwards. Albus figured it was safer to steal Dominus for himself and escape, as that also ensured Barlowe wouldn't lay a finger on Shanoa, since he still needed her to recover and use Dominus. Of course, what Albus didn't predict was that Dominus would take over HIS mind while it was in his possession. Such a shame...
