Worst Levels Ever # 39

Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
Well, would you believe it? I accepted long ago that Advance Wars was dead and buried forever, but then out of nowhere, a new remake of the first two games is winging its way to the Nintendo Switch!
It's brought back a lot of nostalgic memories for me, and to celebrate the return of this much-loved series, I decided to criticize it once again, just like the old days!
Advance Wars 2 at first appears to be an improvement on the original in every regard, but while the campaign mode is fun, I've always felt it was a little lacking in some areas. Allow me to explain...

tfw I hate pre-deployed units maps because it means it forces me to play a certain way and making it repetitive instead of being creative on what I want to do and respond to the enemy actions

Exactly this. It's much more of a chess opener without pre deployed units. A lot of strategies are open to you.

The Only thing that I hate from pre deployed map is that there is no place to heal Air Unit and Naval Unit

I can't think of a nice way to say this, but your post bugs me enough that I still have to say it. Your viewpoint makes no sense at all to me. Having pre-deployed units does not in any way "force you to play a certain way." It's still up to you how to use your units and having them on the map at the start drastically cuts back the monotony of the beginning of a battle. It doesn't make sense to believe that pre-deployeds restrict strategies, either

@@sammer1097 It forces you to use a specific army composition, which in turn can heavily influence playstyle. For example, if the game gives you a bunch of air units it's basically telling you "Go fast, hit hard", while if it hands you a bunch of indirects you're basically being told to play the map defensively. Being given multiple battleships and zero air support tells you that you're going to have to fight near the coast until you can establish a beachhead, while being given an MD Tank and an Artillery and facing down multiple enemy MD tanks, with a single bridge between you and the enemy, means you're GOING to be fighting over a choke point. That being said, while it is restrictive, I don't necessarily believe that's a bad thing for the campaign, and here's why - in the campaign, you're given a specific scenario and you have to win within the constraints of that scenario, it's like you're fighting a specific battle in a larger conflict. Whereas the War Room and VS Mode it's more freeform and can be equated to fighting a larger, continuous conflict from start to finish.

My personal hope is that Re-Boot Camp gives us the best balanced versions of each CO and gives us stuff like the DoR Fog of War (where the AI actually DOESN'T cheat), while also smoothing over some of the more problematic Hard Campaign missions like Kanbei's Error relying on an AI oversight (one which could be fixed) to win, or Rivals! where it was literally IMPOSSIBLE to win on certain unchanging RNG seeds. i will be so sad if they give us dual strike max again

Advance wars 2 allows you to play as almost every CO in the campaign, so I liked ot better.

Advance wars 1 has a lot of unique challenges with fighting almost all the cos and advance wars 2 has you playing around your cos strength so both are repetitive in some form aw2 because the opponent co is one of 3 (not including strum because he is only in the last 2 missions) while aw1 repetitiveness is only being able to play 3 cos so your strategy never really changed on how your cos work.

@@nameplease8811 the thing I didn't like about AW 1 was it was massively unbalanced. I really do hope the reboot has some QoL changes to make the game a little more fun and balanced. Nothing major. Some AI improvements. CO balancing. Unit balancing. Map balancing. I think they can keep the game's spirit alive while making these changes

@@nameplease8811 I disagree about unit balancing in 1. Certain units were way too strong with little counterplay. They fixed it a bit in 2 by making the values a bit more reasonable. And the CO'S were also horribly unbalanced which they also fixed in 2 by tweaking the values a bit. Of the AW1 CO's, Sonja was absolutely worthless. Even in fog, her specialty, she was garbage due to her low fighting power and bad luck. AI has come far since the old GBA days so they can definitely make it play more like a human player.

This opens up the possibility that Lash let herself lose because either 1) she was trying to develop a way to capture the HQ without infantry 2) she has a massive ego and thought she could mess with her opponent or 3) she let the anti-air sit there because she thought it was hilarious. Lash is smart, but she ain't a stable genius.

I hope they're going to let us replay campaign missions we've already cleared in a single save file, for going for those rank-based unlocks. It'd make life sooo much easier than having to savescum or restart full campaigns because of one bad grade.

I doubt it, but it would be nice. Though more than that, I think multiple save files are in order. Especially with the different routes and such. Maybe the War Room could just add any cleared Campaign Maps, available to be played with any COs you've cleared it with(because some missions are entirely different depending on if you pick Andy, Max, or Sami, namely Green Earth.).

Funny enough, I've grown to enjoy war room content, due to how other strategy games tend to play out in similar matters. Really, they're all exercises in learning how to take the middle area of the map and keeping it that way. The good news is the ai doesn't understand what middle ground is/won't try proper tactics to take it, and you can capitalize on that

I had fun whit war room maps mostly because some of them are pretty silly. Like the ring which is a 1v3 but your base is surronded by silos and pipes and the AI doesn't know to destroy them. So you just park a tank to stop Jess, a few AA guns for Eagle and you kill Drake before he starts annoying you

Pre-deployed leads to better game design, I think. Also, the fundamental difference I see between AW1 and AW2 campaigns is that AW1 levels are long series of micro-puzzles (unit positioning, planning turns, counting tiles, etc.), whereas AW2 levels involve solving one major puzzle (e.g., in the Max level, join-capping the base and building a battleship). Personally, I feel that makes AW1 much more challenging and rewarding, while AW2 is more amenable to pick-up-and-play. Both are great in their own right.

To me, remakes of first games of different series serve 2 purposes: 1: See if people are still interested it the franchise. 2: Give people who never got to own the console the original was on the ability to play it on a console they'll likely own now. Sure, a new game is fine and all, but a remake is there to set the new groundwork. After all, there's a pretty big gap between the last game and the remake, so people might not remember it enough to make the new game profitable. I see them more as building blocks to the future for dormant game franchises.

Strange,i had the opposite feeling. I liked the story of 2 much more than 1,because it pitted each faction against the Black Hole generals in sequence. It also helped that i played 2 before 1,so i was put off but the graphic style of 1,and knowing all of them as friends i tought it was stupid for them to have that infighting while there was a bigger enemy to deal with together

1:08 I couldn't agree more. Too bad the Advance Wars subreddit will never understand. Orange Dawn HC is disconnected to say the least. It's practically a map that favors indirects and it happens to give the player Max. I think it's supposed to encourage the player to use navy, but that has the problem of how _AWFUL_ navy is in the Advance Wars games in general because of how ineffective it is for its cost. Yeah, OOPS. Also, WHY doesn't Two Week Test check for Rout condition? You'd think at that point the game would recognize the player to be convincingly defeated. Of course, I recall Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo declared a player who didn't have anything built on Day 2 to be defeated; where is THAT for the NC version of TWT NC? I do think Show Stopper is still worse. Fog of War idiocy where you don't have predeployed units and Adder happens to have predeployed Bombers in obnoxious locations to spite the player. At least with A Mirror Darkly, you get predeployed forces scattered along the map to make it easy to get Vision. But whatever the case, I personally am not too bothered by AW2's levels aside from Final Front NC being stupidly big for a timed map with its share of inane decisions that at least got toned down in HC. You do bring more insight to what is going on. Competitive makes maps start off with both sides having little to work with, wanting to work with the sandbox nature of the games' unit deployment. AW2 is simply appealing to this stance with what you're talking about. Still, the stance does have the issue that infantry flood becomes very much a real problem on these sorts of maps particularly with Anti-Air Tanks not being to 1HKO them on significant terrain unless they have an attack boost. Uh, yeah, Advance Wars, fix your unit imbalances first. Please.

I hope that the AI would be affected by the Fog, nerfs to some characters (AW1 Max, AW2 Kanbei) and buffs to weakest generals (Flak wouldn't mind a small ATK boost to all units while keeping his luck modifiers, Sonja getting a boost for attacking from forests, etc.)

this reminds me of an old game i have called "metal fatigue". it's a "starcraft" style game where you can build large "Combot" units. there are also ancient ruins you can capture with special Drill units. BUT the AI doesn't understand HOW to do that, so if you capture one, the AI will try to ATTACK the building instead of using a drill unit. it's both annoying and hilarious to see a DOZEN enemy Combots uselessly slashing at one of those buildings!

Well, even if i'm glad about that remake, the 3d models are weird but it's alright But about AW2, the thing that I found really sad compare to the first one...they removed these little animations with the characters reactions ! Which is quite sad and make the game less entertaining, not by a lot, but it's still something a bit sad that, we'll actually never see back until the remake ! Which is great

TIL of that flaw in two-week test. I also figured since you had pre-deployed units that you couldn't cheese it by doing nothing, but apparently not. Oddly enough even though I played HC in AW2 that initial Max mission largely eluded my memory, moreso just the general slog and difficulty of a lot of the levels. That pre-deployed one that Max got with the fog of war and the plot centered around POWs was pretty neat though.

I don´t think they will fix any issues from the originals, specially since the new game is handled by Wayforward and not the original developers, IS... Or maybe they do change things because they are not the origanal developers... ummmm, idk, I just want AW online!

Of all things to get a remake out of nowhere, Advance Wars was the one I least expected. Maybe if I believe hard enough I could see both the Legend of Starfy and Mega Man World quintologies getting remade as well. Of course, each quintology would be sold on one complete N.Sane Trilogy/Reignited Trilogy set, and the Starfy one might be exclusive to Japan, but still!

Considering both games are in the remake and they both have different CO Powers, I wonder how they’ll balance the CO Powers and the maps that with around said powers... Edit: oh. Right. They could also just have two different games to select in this package. Derp.

It's fine if they copy paste as long as it is just the campaign (because it is, values are mostly the same, at some point they show a map of the campaign, with a Max tank attacking an Olaf tank, and the damage value was literally the same). They can do a lot of things to balance Multiplayer, War room, etc... Anything they choose, I just hope they choose anything instead of just doing nothing (No nerfed Sturm, Hachi and Kanbei, buffed Naval units, and many more changes they NEED to do).
