I remember one summer in the late 70's, camping on the grounds of Castle Howard. In the early morning my mum walked with me to the mausoleum and we explored the grounds when nobody else was around. It's one of my favourite memories of my childhood. I adore Castle Howard and have returned many times.

How cool is that, to be given a tour by Nicholas Howard into the Howard family crypt where Nicholas said he'd be one day. In a hundred years, I hope our descendants can watch this video!!!

What a beautiful mausoleum! Julie, the massive preservation costs of keeping these stately and historic home is absolutely daunting! I don’t envy you even a little! It is like having the responsibility of conserving a museum and all of its treasures, without a museum’s public support and budget. You, and the Montagu family have done such a fantastic job with Mapperton! Thank you for sharing the history with all of us. Not just Mapperton, but all of the other stately homes that you make videos of! If I ever get the opportunity to visit Britain again, I’ll plan my trip around visiting the places you have shared with us!

I’ll always remember my visit to Castle Howard several decades ago. I remember at the time there were concerns regarding the crumbling grand front facade.

I was there a few years ago and spent 3 hours in the gardens alone. That estate is BREATHTAKING! The walks and trails surrounding it are so beautiful. I hope to travel across the pond again some day for another visit.

Hi Julie, I just love your channel, thanks for taking us back to Castle Howard. It's hard to believe it has remained in the original family for over 300 hundred years, and the events throughout those years that have taken place they never had to forfeit or surrender it. I loved seeing the vast landscape and the mausoleum was wonderful. Thank you again. Love from N.Y.

Castle Howard designed by Sir John Vanbrugh who brought English Baroque style to culmination. Years later he designed Blenheim Palace, the home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, which is the greatest palace of Britain.

That mausoleum is a great example of the power, wealth and ego that the first Earls had back in those days. That ceiling looks like St Paul's, the colonnade on the exterior looks like something that the Pharoahs of ancient Egypt would've built or the Parthenon in Athens. The first Earl just had that built in his back yard as a private cemetery for his family. Amazing.

Crypts look so uncomfortable. You are blocked off from mother earth. I want to be buried in a wicker coffin with a bunch of acorns on me so so that my remains will give life to a new tree for the world! 🎄 🌎
