The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

I have to add - I think there was a step that was missed with the chocolate ice cream. The salt and the snow was used outside the container, to help it freeze. The delicious chocolate filling that you drank would have taken about 15 - 20 minutes to make in an old wooden barrel ice cream maker. Just google old wooden barrel ice cream maker, my dad had one, and snow and ice was used to surround the container containing the delicious stuff to make it freeze. We would manually turn the handle on the icecream maker containing the spear, surrounded with snow and salt, with the delicious chocolate filling inside the sphere. And the snow and ice created some type of super freezing mechanism. We would always say, not enough salt in the snow or too much salt … 😂😂😂 hope I explained it clear enough … 😅😅😅
@Maximusrex4575
@Maximusrex4575 7 ай бұрын
I agree, I don't think the chocolate was supposed to go directly into the ice and salt, the recipe even says to place the vessel with the chocolate into the ice. Reminds me of being a kid when we would use a small sealed container with the ingredients and place it into a larger container with ice and salt, then we would roll them for a while.

Yeah- I’m pretty sure they did it wrong too since there were issues with translation. The “hot chocolate” milk and spices mixture absolutely should have been in a shaker surrounded by the salt and ice.
@StokesCheri
@StokesCheri 2 ай бұрын
Exactly! But... it also should've been mixed with heavy cream. A lot of old recipes leave out what we would consider important (but assumed) ingredients or steps. *Keto dieters make this all the time in a mason jar but you have to shake FOREVER (5+ min).* 1 cup heavy cream, 2 tbs granular monkfruit (i.e. sugar), 1tbsp cocoa powder, unsweetened, 1 tsp pure vanilla extract. Combine all ingredients in a wide mouth pint sized mason jar, screw on the lid and shake vigorously for 5 min. The liquid will double in volume. Freeze for 3-24hrs.

My Hubby of 40 years and I LOVE watching the two of you together! We definitely see kindred spirits as we actually really and truly laugh out loud with you! ♥️🤣 The secret to our long and blissfully happy marriage is our Faith and always to remember no matter what life brings focus on the ones you love and never forget to include lots of time for playing and laughter!! You see, when you always leave room for love and laughter we promise there is just such an incredible joy to the life you all will share that facing the many ups and downs that everyone must endure somehow becomes possible when those difficult times are wrapped in all of those beautiful memories that you have made shared and weathered together seem to fade into the background!!! Watching the two of you have so much fun making sandwiches is a great sign of the many decades of joy to come!! God bless you both, your children and entire families!!! After the sorrow of the many lives lost to ravages of two hurricanes it’s been nice to have a reason to laugh!! ♥️♥️🤣 Lots and lots of love from the Southern US 🇺🇸

If you want to re-create the chocolate ice cream recipe at the beginning of the video, a stone slab (metate) and metal or stone roller will process the raw cacao better; in the original illustration that was shown in the antique book with the original recipe, that is what the man who was rolling the chocolate would have been using, rather than a wooden board and rolling pin. The stone metate (with legs that hold the surface up at a slanted angle) would have had a container of coals set underneath it to heat the stone up; that, plus the texture of the stone itself would both grind and melt the cacao, bringing out the cocoa butter and turning the cacao into a thick liquid that could be scraped/poured into the container with the snow. That, when shaken and combined with the snow, would have frozen into "curls" like the recipe said, and might have turned out with a better texture, although the flavor would still have been bitter. The hot chocolate recipe contains Jamaica pepper, which I have heard is another word for allspice, and the "amber" is ambergris, which was an exotic flavoring in those days, but is now illegal to buy except under certain conditions, because it comes from whales, which have to be dead in order to harvest it.
@americanwoman9342
@americanwoman9342 7 ай бұрын
I’ve watched a gentleman in Australia pick up ambergris on the coastlines of all the surrounding islands of Australia.. His dog has been trained to find it.. I’ve always wondered why it was illegal to sell.. He gives his away just like the nautilus shells he finds..

I was going to say she needs a metate but most didnt carry those in England even during those time periods or even now, that is a special order thing.
@e.urbach7780
@e.urbach7780 7 ай бұрын
@@michelleg7 Yes, however in those days both the metate and the chocolate itself were luxury goods, so the coffee shops that sold chocolate, and anybody who was buying chocolate, very likely would have had one. The Chocolate Room (reproduction) at Hampton Court Palace has one, for example. It might even be easier to find one in England these days, what with the diversity of the population especially in London, but chocolate is now so much cheaper, and in a "just-add-water" form, that having a metate is no longer necessary. But if they intend to reproduce the original recipe in their cafe, I think they should invest in a metate!

Oh my goodness now you have icecream as well as "the sandwich" your family is incredible! Julie if you could one day write a family cookbook. Luke Jamaica pepper is allspice and the amber sounds like saffron or possibly tumeric. During this time Spain had a heavy middle eastern population(that became Spanairds) and a spice trade with middle eastern countries as far as India. I believe Luke to very practical and the type of man not to "count his chicks before his eggs hatch" per sae? We warmed our plates -- but I am from Northern Ireland and now living in the USA -- it has nothing to do with the temperature of the home, it is to keep the food warm. Have always done so. Thanks for explaining the AGA as I have always wondered. To the Viscountess: The funny thing watching your interactions, and please forgive me, is that your husband speaks over you constantly & often I am wondering what you were trying to say when you were cut off. I don't know how you stand that! LOL So enjoyed watching your interactions! As to the chill in the house, Americans are used to constant temperature regulation! The key to feeling comfortable in the UK is dressing warmly, drinking hot tea, and hot water bottles (I am enjoying one right now) and lots of warm rugs. To the Viscount: You have a very easy-going wife & one who is also a very curious and hard-working you must appreciate her enthusiasm!.

LoL ! You two are hilarious 😂😂😂 Tack is what we call hard bread in Newfoundland. We have it mainly with salt fish. Luke is correct, the sailors did use it on long voyages to Newfoundland. I now live in BC Canada and cannot find it here, so I make my own. 5 cups of flour, 2 cups of water, bake for 1 1/2 hours, store in cold place, paper bag. It will turn green if you put it in a plastic bag, the ugliest of plastic as storage containers becomes quite obvious 😅😢😅. It continues to be made at Purity Factory’s in St. John’s Newfoundland, but I have discovered I like my own better, but cannot imagine it with chocolate ice cream 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

This lesson from the Earl was fun, & Julie, you look amazing in those fabulous outfits. Loving Luke's cheeky suggestion that in reality hes in charge (I don't think so, Luke). 🤣 The humour & competition between you is hilarious

I thought I was watching an episode of I Love Lucy with Luke and Julie in the kitchen. Thank you for the laughter. Please more cooking shows with two of you trying out new recipes. Also, Luke chattering facts while Julie is trying to master the task is truly adorable. You're a beautiful couple.

When the two of you are talking over one another it just makes me chuckle. It gets a little confusing, but the point of what is being said still comes through. I actually love it...
