Now I'm really hooked. Since the first session, I've pulled pictures of some of my really good, and some discarded, and some nasty temperament but horses that let me win, rope horses and cutters trying to see where the whorl placement was. Wish you'd told me this 60 years ago. *LOL*

This is so interesting to learn about! I have a filly that was born 2 weeks ago that has 3 whirls that form a triangle with the point between her eyes and the other 2 higher, closer to the temples. Mom is AQHA, dad is Andalusian. She looks very fancy and is bold, curious, and smart, but is super temperamental about being touched on her belly and legs. She also sticks her tongue out of the side of her mouth a lot. I’m very curious about how she is going to turn out. Now you have me looking at all my horses whirls and analyzing them! Thanks for bringing such insightful and original content! 😊

I love this one. Thank you. I am riding a mare. She has 3 whorls on her firehead. In leverage with her eyes two, next to eachother. The right is a little bigger than the left. And one obove of them, just underneath her forelock. And she has two whorls at her neck each side one in differente places. She is very talented and beautiful but very impulsive, sensitive and easily scattered. Being a consistence rider with a low pulsrate helps ... mostly ...like you explained. Thx a lot

I have a z swirl horse, the only thing that might be different is that he is not grumpy with people. However, He’s really only comfortable with me being in his space, other people he just gets all tight with. He does grind his teeth at other horses which is annoying but only in the pasture. Have to do the same stretch before you get on him and have to be simple and quiet when you do get on him for about 3 minutes. So I can see the bear thing. 😅 He’s never really fought me on much. He has a chest wheat that goes only almost 1/2 way up his neck and ends with a wind pipe swirl 🤷♀️ thanks for the video, I’ve been trying to make him into a all around horse and it shakes his confidence everytime I switch to something different. So I’ll just try him as a heel horse because he’s incredibly cowy and will follow one anywhere. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it’s giving me more insight to what he might need.

Didn't know I needed that info? Thanks for the thought provoking subject. I've always liked whorls and understood some people seek them and make buying decisions based on location. I've got lots of horses to work with and will assess them accordingly for fun. Makes me wonder about other possibilities in conformation color and markings and traits I've overlooked that may have deeper understanding. Thanks as always.

It is fun learning what you have learned over the years. Some of mine goes with yours but not all of it. We have some new mares in our broodmare band and their foals are not for sale until I find out how they will train up and whether the mare gets to stay in our program. One produced a foal with the strangest whorl pattern I have ever seen. I sent a picture to you. I don't remember if I included one of his neck with a very long whorl just off the crest. He will be the most interesting to work! We raise Morgan horses and I know that some of the bloodlines are much harder to work than others. All of the worst of those horses are long gone but I would have loved to look at the whorls on those horses. I do lean toward certain bloodlines because of the superior disposition, along with conformation and work ethic. Now I will start comparing the whorl patterns, too! Thank you for doing this thought provoking pair of videos.

@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Жыл бұрын
I am glad you enjoy the videos and I am even more glad that you are open minded enough to give thought to what I say even if it is different from what you have learned. That is the sign of a true Horseman. I haven't much experience with Morgans, the few I have been around were flighty and silly but all the Morgan people I have met say I got the flukes. There is a ranch in Colorado that raises a lot of them for ranch horses and I was supposed to go start a bunch of them some years ago but the deal fell apart somehow, I dont recall why but I have regretted now for some years. It is funny to me after doing this video that I am also noticing more about the whorls. I have always given them some grace and a hat tip but had never talked about them and I am now seeing that a lot of my observations in my notes and memories of old men are very accurate

Never rode a Hancock I really liked (probably rode 40+), they can turn out ok, but never rode one that really excelled at anything. Some were built very well and looked like they should be athletes but just never had the softness to get it done. People's affection for them has always boggled mind, mind you none of these people had any need or desire for an actual cowhorse or the ability to ride and handle one.
@andrewcastillo9558 Жыл бұрын
We've owned probably 4 or 5. Used 2 on a cow/calf operation for couple years. Would go all day long. Wife uses one for barrels and ain't terrible, 3d sometimes 2d times. Don't think I'd want them as performance horses.
@carlbrown6799 Жыл бұрын
I've never owned a Hancock, but Shoat Webster and Everett Shaw swore by them at the big steer trippings. One thing I've been told that is that Roan Hancock produced the best cowboy horses. I have known a few really nice calf-roping horses bred from Red man.
@lthorsemanship8150 Жыл бұрын
@@carlbrown6799 thats the reputation I've always heard and I guess would sum it up, "cowboys horse's". They'll get the job done, they're good sized with good feet, but they lack the softness and feel of the more "cow horse" bred horses in my opinion. They'll work a cow, kinda, if they have to, but nothing like a peppy San.
@carlbrown6799 Жыл бұрын
@@lthorsemanship8150 I like the Peppy San's if they're crossed right so they have some size, bone and feet. I spent some time in the CH futurity game, with some satisfactory success, and it wasn't for me. Starting a 50+ head of 2 yr olds looking for a top 5 percenter left too many colts cast aside. Ranching, timed events in rodeo were my forte and kept me eating for 4 years. And that takes a certain type of horse mentally and physically. At age 22 I hocked everything I had to buy a 15 year, non-papered brown gelding after just roping 3 calves on him. From that time till I quit 6 yrs ago, if a horse didn't have his body style, a bit of attitude that makes him think he is special, have to 3/4 race horse and just enough cow so that he will buy into the game, I wasn't a buyer. Now Bret has me wondering where were the whorls.
