Funny thing about Colin's banana bread joke, it could actually work in that situation. Saying something completely irrelevant, and inoffensive catches people off gaurd in a way that can diffuse tensions. It would of course, depend on the exact sittuation, and multiple hostile individuals will be getting feedback from each other too, but it still could work.
