My husband and I moved to easterhouse after the compulsory purchase order was placed on our kelvinside home, the price city chambers paid for our two bedroom living room kitchen bathroom in a beautiful red sandstone building was ridiculous. I must say I found the people wonderful and enjoyed my time there. My self,my husband, and all my children went on to higher education my husband and I both returning to university and doing second degrees when for different reasons our careers changed each gaining masters and each continuing to upgrade our education until we retired. We traveled pretty much the world.we met people from every station in life. I admit perhaps we both had a different outlook on life as both grew up in the West end of Glasgow and had decent education we did marry young and continued with education gaining degrees in initial planned careers that both switched in our 30's I've never had as good neighbours as those I had in easterhouse. They truly were the salt of the earth

I lived at 149 Easterhouse rd 1958-70 ,moving from a single end in Dennistoun it was like moving to paradise.I never thought about the negatve side of hardly any shops or community centres,I was only14 and was too busy playing footie with ma pals and exploring all the wide open spaces.To think that nearly 60k people lived there at its peak and they had to travel into Glasgow for decent shopping and entertainment.So sad for all the people,I have nothing but fond memories of Easterhouse!

I moved to Easterhouse from plant St in Dennistoun,in 1958,and i have got to say that I thought we were moving to paradise,from five of a family in a single end to having two bedrooms ,kitchen ,bathroom,greenfields,I used to have to travel to dennistoun every day to school,deliver milk in morning with Scottish farmers before school,I know employment is different today.but just sayiing Easterhouse in my youth was great,and I will never be ashamed of having lived there!

The reality of that town back then was that most of the rumours about us were true, but it wasn't nearly as common as it was made out when you were in amongst all that mayhem. it was a wonderful adventure, I faced many hardships including not enough food, crime, violence in the streets and the list goes on but It made me a mentally hardened individual now and honestly I have never felt that community spirit or had a particularly magical new years/christmas the same because everywhere else you go, people don't talk, people close doors on each other. We have become a safer Glasgow with less poverty in modern times but we have sacrificed alot of the major parts that made my childhood as great a time as it was.

i too used to live in Easter house Auchencrow st the dolls houses as they were known from 1966 to 1974 almost eight years living there i moved to Manchester that year but i remember watching this about 1984/85 but the people talking here is certainly intelligent conversion about a huge housing estate scheme and little in the way of proper resources about 2003/4 i appeared on Radio 2 pop master and i spoke to KEN Bruce and he said to me your not originally from Manchester and I said to him I came from Easterhouse

I recall in the late 80's and early 90's visiting this area frequently whilst buying and trading guitars. There were some really wonderful people living here and of course ( like anywhere else) some not so good people. I think it got a bad reputation because of the few and not because of the many.

The schemes of Castlemilk, The Drum, Easterhouse and Pollok probably looked a great idea on paper in the 50's, but all suffered from the same problems. Decent folk living cheek by jowl with bams in isolated estates with few amenities, was a failed experiment that would never affect the so-called 'planners.'

I remember Easterhouse in the late 1980s. Dante's inferno comes to mind. I was a security guard for a few days. My father told me that when it was first built, people nick-named it Exodus because everybody wanted out as soon as they arrived. I forget the street names, but I have this memory of burnt-out cars and a 30-foot-high water spout on the pavement. Half the houses were boarded up. It looked like a third-world nightmare Disneyland in the city of culture.

Moved to 74 Aberdalgie Road in October 1958 from the Gallowgate on my tenth birthday. Then there wasn't even street lights or pavements on Westerhouse road. had to walk a couple of hundred yards often in the dark on very muddy conditions to catch the number 41 bus to Duke Street.

My parents came from Easter house and it was nice then and no one said anything but nice things we lived in Darley Drive and it was a nice flat with nice backyard but as we got older moved away so we had no problem at all. Thank you.

Great to see this film of old Easterhouse, stayed most of my time there at 133 Lochend Rd, just down from the round church, (great to see my old hoose in the film), all that i've seen and done, I owe to Easterhouse, and the teachers at St Clares & St Leonards. Loved my time living there, had a great circle of friends from Calcots Pl, Lochend Rd, Rachan St, Lochdochart Rd, in fact all over the scheme. 2 minutes from anywhere in Easterhouse and you were in the countryside, I'm sure like me, there are many who owe a lot to Easterhouse, doesn't matter where I end up in the world, I'll always be an Easterhouse boy.

I lived in Easterhouse, for a while, in 1983. In a two-story house near the train station. I worked almost entire in Easterhouse, and surrounding areas. I am from Arizona, in the US. When I arrived there, I had never seen so many government apartment buildings. I was also not prepared for the amount of people just hanging out, those living off the government dole. And I could not believe the number of dogs...dogs and dog manure everywhere. When I was new there, I stepped in it all the time. Easterhouse reminds me of many inner cities, in the United States. . They have been run by liberal/socialist-minded politicians, for decades, and are now in a state of decay. (Vast areas of Detroit, Michigan have been bulldozed down, and made into empty lots). The local politicians seem to retain their power, by promising freebies, to residents, ie, free housing, no need to find a job, a "We'll take care of you, just trust us" mentality. It's a shame. I loved the people there, but what living conditions...But that's government-run housing projects, for you.

lol I grew up in easterhouse from 1959 to1980, and trying to explain the amount of dogs to people who have never experienced it is funny.... 6 families in a close and at least 5 of them had dogs and every dog was allowed to roam the streets including mine, then occasionally council did a round up and we had to go to cardonald dog home and buy dog back, or as we called it, picking up the dug fae its holiday hoose... regarding the unemployment, it was unusual not to be in work pre 80s, the dole became massive in 80s onward all over uk, and drugs became an issue which lead to crime and other problems... but local politicians have no power to offer anyone a free home, or say we will take care of u, government housing was an improvement to what had been before, and its even better now with the Glasgow housing association and its reasonably priced rented modern homes...

"Councillors are paid to represent the people but they don't do it". To think that a woman in this film said this and 4 decades later it's still the same. The councillors - like MSPs and MPs now - ask the people to vote them into power and say they'll do this, that and the other thing if they give them their vote. Once they get their 4rse in the chair they do what THEY want. There is no legal accountability - they can literally tell a pack of lies and then cook up an excuse - as they do - for not doing what they said they would. The only thing that will change this is to make it illegal for a politician to say they'll do something and to then not do it. Manifesto documents should form the basis of a legally enforceable contract between the politician and the people.

And before Easterhouse, The Gorbals was branded Glasgow Hell's Kitchen, not a lot of it was that bad, good few streets needed wiped but not the whole place, a lot of the old buildings (thanks to old pictures) would be worth an astounding fortune if they were still here.. Easterhouse on the other hand; A combination of poor planning before and after World War II, lack of facilities then Thatcher killing industry stone dead, had been declining from the end of World War II but she was the icing on the cake, doing little for people in Glasgow and elsewhere in the same situation bringing about a lead on to where things are today, which tends to be the butt of many people's jokes...

sadly all the peripheral council estates of Glasgow like Drumchapel, Castlemilk etc. were victims of poor planning when it came to amenities and schools. I live in Drumchapel and the strong community spirit is what made these estates thrive today in spite of the poverty and deprivation. Sadly 33 years on from this, these estates have been regenerated but some things never change. I personally enjoy living in Drumchapel but I still think more could be done to tackle the problems that still exist in places like Drumchapel, Easterhouse etc. Investment in council housing in the 1980s could've been a help but Thatcherism had no interest in helping out those in poverty and deprivation not only in housing but also in employment. As these estates continue to be regenerated, hopefully both community spirit and activism will be a voice to those in power that past mistakes should never be repeated!

It was filmed in 1984 and, at that time, Margaret Thatcher was introducing privatisation and neoliberal economics. Following the introduction of the Right to Buy Scheme in 1980, residualisation was definitely evident in the peripheral housing schemes of Glasgow (as well as the rest of the UK). Therefore, Thatcherism indeed - at the time that this episode was filmed and aired - was contributory to the problems. I totally agree with you. The Labour Party of today has most certainly lost sight of being all for the working class as PMs like Tony Blair have continued in neoliberalism and neoliberalism economics. The historical roots and historical campaigning for the working class - via the Labour Party - are long gone. I, too, am working class and from a working class background and am appalled at the lack of voice for the working class. New Labour is nothing in comparison to its shadow!

Whoever the architect was that designed the steel frame windows should have been sent back to school. The amount of condensation sitting on the concrete cill every morning was atrocious and contributed to the dampness that was prevalent in most houses.

(cranhill, easterhouse, queenslie, etc). you'd put in for a repair..... never get it.... and thats just the tip of the iceberg. never be ashamed of where you came (Glasgow made me what I am). You think it looks bad here... You should have seen what it looked like some 10 years later right before they started to demolish the area in the mid to late 90s. It was a much bigger shit hole that was dangerous as fuck... I knew a few people from that area back then. Good people for sure, but there was some real shit going on in the back ground. Drugs was a major Issue. I saw a mother with her child in one arm get slapped the fuck out ov... Saw a bus driver getting mugged with a kitchen knife and to top it of on a different bus a kid threw a brick through the drivers window for a laugh. I dont know if the 70s, 80s were anything like this, but easterhouse as i grew up was a real no go area.
