The 17WMR has more energy at 100 yards than the .22 mag, but only 60% of the sectional density. Sectional density is a big factor in penetration. I DOUBT the 17 WMR vaporized. I think it went through the first jug and bounced off the second one.

I did this test when the 17 hmr first was hot years ago. The 22 mag the right bullet will drop a deer with a heart or lung shot. Also feathers are tough and the 22 mag will get the job done at suprising distance. You just discovered one of the 17hmrs flaw. Penetration. Small critters it rears up within distance, but honestly a 22lr is better if you plan on your target being groceries. Past the Long Rifle the magnum comes into play, but can be used for both. Just more expensive than 22lr. The 32grain maxi-v+ explodes water jugs pretty well. Nice video! Keep'em coming!

I know this video is old but I have since tried out a bunch of different 22wmr rounds. The TNT versions are much more explosive and lower penetration. A physical comparison, the hollow point cavity is significantly larger than on "regular" hollow points. So I suspect that this also contributed to the 17hmr's lower penetration in this test whereas something like a Vmax might go deeper.

The 22 mag is a potent round and adequate for self defense. Biggest problem is that a rim fire bullet does not always go off. If one applies the 21' foot rule, it's a risky proposition if you have a misfire and even the 2nd round fires true, you're counting on one small caliber round to stop an assailant.

I picked the .22 mag over the 17 hm. that is why I own a .22 mag savage, and it is a tack driver, looking at the savage B22 Magnum precision for target shooting. At that range I would even put a .22 LR. would penetrate more than the .17hmr. Using bolt action rifles My pick for rifles is Savage, they all shoot very tight groups. Both of these bullets have similar energy equations. Where the energy of the HMR (137 ft lbs) is from the velocity and the WMR (140 ft lbs) the weight of the bullet. But the design of the HMR bullet allows all the energy transferred out, staying in 1 milk jug. Where as the 22 mag transfers it energy forward with the bullet for better penetration. For hunting I want that energy in my kill. So critters smaller than coons the HMR is preferred for hunting. For critters like coyotes, a WMR penetration through ribs and such is preferred. But both can do either job.
@ferengiprofiteer91453 жыл бұрын
What can you hunt with the 17 that the 22 wouldn't be better at? I get it that the 17 can hit something at a greater distance, but what can it make a cleaner kill on? Paper punching is a means to an end to me.
@drewhobbs68373 жыл бұрын
@@ferengiprofiteer9145 The bigger advantage is really in the environment you hunt in. I hunt a lot of alfalfa farm fields and low grass prairie. The extra range and accuracy is great. Easier for kids since there is less bullet lift/drop to account for. When hunting in sage brush, sticks, tall grass, or wind, my friends with a 22 mag have an advantage. The HMR seems too light to get through any of that without ripping it's self apart. They are so similar they serve the same purpose, a 22 mag is not on my radar to buy. I wouldn't sell or trade my 17 HMR only to get a 22 mag. And my friends with 22 mag love thier guns too. I wouldn't recommend someone switching either, because you are right that neither is really better when it comes to harvesting an animal, or shooting paper.

.22 Mag, Hornady 30 grain Vmax bullets, will violently fragment in a 1 gallon water jug. Some pieces will exit, but lack sufficient energy to penetrate a second water jug placed directly behind the first. At 150 yards, bullets perform as a FMJ and will penetrate the second water jug but stop without exiting the second jug. .22 Mag is pretty much a 125 yard gun if you're after expansion. By the time the bullet reaches 150 yards, energy is quite low and has dropped from 290 ft lbs at the muzzle to around 81 ft lbs at 150 yards using the 30 grain Vmax. No experience with the .17 HMR, so I cannot comment on that caliber.

I don’t think we’ll all reach a consensus on this issue but it’s a fun topic to discuss. I’m a 22 WMR guy because I like the thump down range of the larger projectile. Bigger holes donchaknow? I know, I know-velocity yada yada. Tiny bullet go zoom. Bigger bullet still zooms but weighs twice + as much and makes a bigger hole. Plus, I can buy plastic points for the 22 WMR that do what the pointy little guy does, better ballistics and expansion. And here we go, lol!

Pretty funny with the old pup. Nice looking family. That was at 100 yards, that 22mag from my experience with it and from your videos has never ceased to amaze me. Definitely in the all time best cartridges class.

This is exactly why I shoot the 22 mag. Penetration! Hogs, beaver, coyotes. It always works for me. It’s so much easier to shoot a rimfire at night than a centerfire. I’m not bothering anyone.

I’m thinking the 22 mag is going to win this one…...

From an example done by a good friend on squirrels with a 17 HMR : Don't shoot a squirrel while he is on top of a limb or in a fork of a limb 'cause that is where he will be until you or someone else pulls the squirrel of the limb or out of the fork as they die that quickly when shot with a 17 HMR and that is regardless of where the squirrel is shot, body, gut or head. Totally different with a 40 gr. .22 mag except for a head shot.

I'd like to know what the cows look like where you get that colored milk lol. I like both those calibers too. Depending on what I'm doing it's hard to choose. New challenge, 100yd. hit a coin with both. See what it does to the coin. Maybe a quarter?

The 17hmr very likely blew up, hence no penetration as such. I had a 22 mag for yrs and I found that the hollow points did not expand much. I saw a vid in KZbin a few yrs ago that showed a 22 mag. of the Remington variety that was specifically a Jacketed Soft Point using ballistic gel compared to other varieties and - The cavity and expansion was tremendous and really surprised me. My 22 mag was a Marlin with clip feed, model now unknown. I deemed it accurate out to 100 yards for varmints. It had the infamous MarShfield finish on it I believe it was called. Aget about 2 yrs I thought I would refinish the wood but unsure what I would find. To my surprise I found, really nice quality Walnut and it looked super nice when I was finished

Awesome. I was like the same way. The dogs got my wife interested and it all went south from there. Junior took the one that I thought he would. Had a built in grab handle. T- bone. 22 mag for the win though.

Sweet video....I'm a 22 mag guy over the 17 myself but I sure didn't think the mag would have done that.....Now I know....I just love shooting my Uberti stallion 5.5 revolver in 22 mag.

When I first saw this in thought yeah so what and by the end yer goofy country charm won me over.. and I learned something . I said the lighter faster would have gone farther but just like Kennedys head it split out split up and just plain split altogether ... i think i found a piece in Arizona. The ballistics of these ranch house workhorses kept me busy with marmots in Ridgeway. We had 14 Arabians and 460 acres 20-30 head tops and it was up by Dennis Weavers. From TV detective McCloud... actually he got started limping for Marshall Dillon's cofee remember? Well we sure put a few down range ... Dads Air Force champion 24 years. The arsenal was..... well what do you want.. I liked the fat barrel 22s .. Super tight groups at any feasible range 100 yards and they never see or hear you. The fat barrel works like a light suppressor ... And the ultimate lengths were more than standard. BSA drop blocks . Even a BDL browning bottom eject auto... remember how accurate they were. Carnival guns were nice. The finest 22 in the world is the Marlin 39A... it was Billy Stewart's carry gun . He held the hi bore title 24 years ...died at 78 and never used a scope... so we came home with a level bed load of ammo in the old green 52 Chevy truck.. Top speed 50....Sore shoulders after the May shoot .. half million rounds of ww2 30;06... to play with . Then the presses and fresh primers on .. million brass half million loaded... why so many Billy ? He grabbed my shirt and pulled me close and said...korea son. Chosin Reservoir then a full length retreat... he said about half million bodies in a few days. Maybe double no one knew. They kept coming ... I know a cowboy named Ringo... I worked double o and ORO with him... he has citations for killing more men than anyone in history. It was unreal. He carried the box clip Winchester 1905 and a Hawes 44mag single action cowboy gun. Showed me where we bury the rustlers when I was 13...its a serious business out there alone. The only time we took em off was sleep and cook shack. Pat Murphy would throw something heavy...and wash yer plate or go pick eggs and milk at 4am ... all week.. I blew the eye out of a quail at 80 yards with the sheriff rangemasters snubby chief. He missed both barrels.. only bird we had a shot at all day ! Years went by and the Ambassador bought out Charlie Green . Out of the marines I'm living in Charlie Grens mansion...playing the queens piano and Kissinger and Chase finished the China Accords and flew in... Richard beat me 6 of 6 at chess... maybe that's why he owns that big bank. So I'm 66 and never killed anybody... never have to with Ringo... yer in the rocking chair... in yavapai county with the cattleman association and miners fully in charge I would make any bet... not a jury would convict... he had the real license to kill. That license weighs a hundred pounds and ya gotta wear it around yer neck... or it's no good ya know. Hes the only guy I knew could carry it... Arizona Republic Valley State section Aug. 26. 1970 Headline picture is Ringo on the courthouse plaza looking across at his new 1969 white chevy truck. About 30 feet from his guns hanging in the window. 100 feet from the palace bar.. where I've lost many classmates to gunfights playing John Wayne. They didnt put the bar back up after the 2005 fire ... just a restaurant and the horse above the doorway was put to pasture too... thank god that stuff is over.. July 19. 1995 is his obituary Prescott Courier... this was a really tough smart human being.... I can barely comprehend... that such men in great numbers existed... he should really have gotten the congressional medal of honor.... then that medal would REALLY mean something... upgrade it with his presence... I rode the ORO with Ringo... wow !

Great video love the 22mag...one small thing though is your video appears to show you chamber rounds in both rifles the walk down range ...?? Not something I would do

What’s funny is if you pause the video when he’s looking at the 22 mag results at the end you can see portions of the 17 hmr below on the wood. The 17 round fragmented in the first jug.

Living anywhere from the Mason Dixon Line south, if I could have but only one caliber of bullet and no other ..........it would certainly be the 22 Magnum and for very many reasons! . I have believed so and said so for the last 30 years ! I am also a big believer in CCI Rimfire Ammo for longer than that, use 30 and 40 grain . It pleases me greatly all that I have seen accomplished with this round and a in the many different firearms ! It's not for just anybody but in the hands of marksman..........it's something very special. By the way and not that it matters much but The 22 Magnum round went through 4 of the gallon jugs and into the 5th jug , appearing to have almost punching thru the back of that fifth jug . The 22 mag CCI round has more profound changes in how it reacts on and thru its impact than most other calibers.....like water filled jugs compared to meat and bones or phone books.

You got a howler dog? Man I had a beagle/lab mix we adopted as a puppy in 89, she passed around 2000 from cancer. Loved that dog, never got another one after that. On the video, watching your tests and overall series on the 22wmr has basically cemented my conclusion that I made a good choice picking up the RAR in that caliber.
