@@BuffRANGE yep Green tips, made primarily of lead and fitted with a steel "penetrator" head, do not qualify as armor-piercing under the statute, gun rights advocates said. But the question has never been resolved legally because the ATF granted green tips an exemption in 1986 based on their widespread use in shooting sports. I bought ALOT of M855 back in Early 2000's for dirt cheap. I also took advantage of all the cheap 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x51mm and 7.62x25mm. Then in 2007 I grabbed a bunch of 7.92x57mm made in former Yugoslavia. I miss all the dirt cheap surplus ammo. I loved buying 50BMG in 100rnd belts 4-FMJ 1-Tracer for $89.99 in a can. In my area it goes for $3.50-$5 a round for old FMJ

I have seen wounded from green tip . Went through Target like a needle. You better hit bone or a vital. This is why short barrel AR loose so much effective energy AR rifle the marines use 20 inch barrel were much more effective at distance. The longer barrel give longer powder burn and increase the bullet speed. I personally use 55 grain soft point for anti bad guy round.. seen lot of white tail dropped at 100 yards or less. There’s a 64 grain soft point on the market. I would think it works well. These rounds are 223.

XM193 will penetrate level 3 steel armor whereas XM855 won't, but as we can see here the reverse is true when we're talking about composite armor. It may be good to mix ammo in some of your mags to cover all bases.

Not that it takes anything away from your comparison of green tip versus non green tip, but that armor is rated to stop the more potent M80 rounds which is 7.62x51 not just the AK round as you mentioned. Nice vid, keep em coming!

@@Ok-uc5in Yeah, I don't know and I haven't watched this video in at least a year but I would think these results would add at least a little bit to the stopping power. These have a purpose and they are great at what they are good at what they do. They are designed to penetrate hard targets and they will do that to a higher degree than just ball ammo. My favorite round is the 77 Grain OTM in my AR’s. But when you need to really punch through something it’s hard to beat the readily available green tip. And I always keep at least 1k rounds of it on hand.
@EdTom82
@EdTom82 3 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the M855 was given a steel tip for flight stability issues, not penetration enhancement (though penetration capabilities were affected). If you read Blackhawk Down, there's an interesting passage describing how many of the GIs hated the round because in combat it sailed through flesh without causing much damage. It was likened to stabbing someone with an ice pick.

Your problem like many is that you are looking for Hollywood insta-kills. You have to factor in not everybody is gonna be standing still, people are going to be hiding behind cover and every shot is not going to be a perfect "kill shot." Stop chasing the ultimate kill round. It does not exist in small arms unless you can carry a 50 cal machine gun like Rambo

I know that the green tip fired out of a 16 inch barrel with a 1 and 9 twist will punch through a quarter inch of steel like it's not even there. When the shop nearest to me went out of business a year or so ago, I walked in at just the right time everything he had was on sale especially the ammo the ammo was dirt ass cheap I picked up just over 2,000 rounds of the green tip 855 for about $0.06 a round. Even if the characteristics were damn nearly the same it wasn't a loss. And then I find out it punches through a quarter inch of 200 yards I don't think m193 or 223 can do that I mean I might be mistaken but I have yet to experience it or see anybody else do that.

In 1961, a marksmanship testing compared the AR-15 and M-14; 43 % of ArmaLite AR-15 shooters achieved Expert, while only 22 % of M-14 rifle shooters did. Le May ordered 80,000 rifles. In July 1962, operational testing ended with a recommendation for adoption of the ArmaLite AR-15 rifle chambered in .223 Remington. In September 1963, the .223 Remington cartridge was officially accepted and named "Cartridge, 5.56 mm ball, M193". The following year, the ArmaLite AR-15 was adopted by the United States Army as the M16 rifle and it would later become the standard U.S. military rifle. The specification included a Remington-designed bullet and the use of IMR4475 powder, which resulted in a muzzle velocity of 3,250 ft/s and a chamber pressure of 52,000 psi. In the spring of 1962, Remington submitted the specifications of the .223 Remington to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI). In December 1963, Remington introduced its first rifle chambered for .223 Remington a Model 760 rifle. FEDERAL CARTRIDGE/VISTA XM855. Federal XM855FL XM 223 Remington/5.56 NATO 62 GR Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) 20 Box. This is the famous and hard to find mil-spec M855 Steel core Green Tip. It is loaded to NATO specs and is not intended for use in commercial or bolt-action rifles chambered in 223 Remington ammo, but is perfect for your AR15 in 5.56 cal. This is the same ammo in use by our troops right now in Afghanistan. Please check with your gun manufacturer prior to purchasing this ammo. Each round is brass-cased, boxer-primed, non-corrosive, and reloadable. It is both economical and precision manufactured in the USA. Hope this info helps. Have a great day and keep shooting.

That's the barrel twist. 62gr-77gr 7:1 or below, 55gr 9:1 or higher, both rds stabilize different because of weight and material. Stabilizing is very important when it comes to long range accuracy. Many choose 8:1 twist, it's a balance for both rounds

And thats what matter most to me with these rounds. Match grade would def be better for longer range aiming but not as much for most situations that call for the need of your rifle.....

I love the green tips. This video tho reminds me why I need some the 55gr stuff cuz that 55gr stuff is great for varmints. 62gr M855 green tips have a steel core penetrator so their better for self defense and plinking.

People sometimes don't understand that the green tip is a ' penetrator'. It WILL go through more than an fmj, although it's terminal performance against a soft target will be lacking, in comparison.

Not really. Try shooting both. 55gr out of a 20 inch barrel put holes through my ar500 steel targets. M855 does not. That little bit of extra velocity adds a lot to the round

Woth it? I guess it depends mostly on how much your paying for them and what your going to use them for? we have about a thousand rounds of green tip 556 but I wont use them to punch holes in paper. but if I really wanted penetration the green tip would be the go to round. great video as always!

I shot the green tips through a quarter inch steel plate taped to outdated Grainger book that was about 3 or 4 inches thick. You need to try it. It will make you a great video. You need to see the back of the steel plate. And the book smokes !!! Try it.

For when you need to shoot someone made out of concrete... 5.56 is designed for impacting a flesh body not exactly for exploding concrete. While fun to shoot concrete, its not a good test for the round to see which is better. However 55 grain is said to be best against a body because it tumbles and fragments faster than green tip because green tip is more likely to punch through a thinner body target and not start tumbling till much later. Either way i wouldn’t wanna be hit with either round. 62 grain is more stable in flight though

If you're a professional in the business of transportation/protection of UHNW individuals or P.E.P.'s , or you're tasked with transportation of high value assets, then the extra expense and the overpenetration disadvantages are almost negligible with a view on the risk of your trade. For the rest of us mortals, is not a practical option; fun, yesss... useful, not. Thanks for the test & video. It sure was interesting!!
@TheFlashSpeedforce

@I Am Sentinel I know they're meant for combat. However, several countries allow access to special ordnance and also to full auto weapons to accredited/licensed professionals of the trades which I mentioned. That's the reason I worded my comment the way I did. However, overpenetration consequences cannot be ignored since professionals of those trades are not afforded any 'blanket protection' for injury or damage caused to third parties or their property even when they discharge their weapons justifiedly, unlike the lattitude afforded to offcially assigned security detail personnel for high ranking public/govmnt officers. Accuracy was not a consideration in my comment since in real life, live fire exchanges of the kind involving V.I.P. or Assets protection occur in close range, although they can be very, very intense (e.g., the failed attempt a few months ago againts the head of Justice Department of Mexico)

@I Am Sentinel Hi! You know,.. you're right in several issues you mentioned. These are testing times, I admit it. In this year, and so very much in the last months many of us have experienced sad, sad losses, and our beliefs, our decency, our moral credence has been tried. Even our faith has been put to trial. Our faith in ourselves and in our G_d Allmighty. But somewhere, deep inside, I harbor a calm belief, a certainity, that this is not yet the time the Book of Revelations speaks about. I do not know if this is a prelude to such times, or if it is a junction, a turning point which might lead to it if we, mankind, make (or keep making) wrong choices. All I know is that, this yet is not that time. We have to be resilient, persevere, remain strong in our faith, be watchful for evil and reject it in our hearts and deeds. "All that evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing to stop it or prevent it" It still is in our hands.

They will penetrate the thinner body armor, like lever 2-3a (Possibly 3A, I'm not 100% on that level) but they absolutely will NOT penetrate anything thats level 3 or higher. Not a true level THR33 or higher. As i said before, the Green Tips arent AP rounds. They do NOT meet the guidelines for AP rounds. But the are enhanced penetration rounds for sure!!! Lol.

Hey, that "Frontier" ammo is NOT made by "Hornady"!!! Not at all even a lil bit whatsoever!!! Frontier simply loads their ammo with the Hornady lead head!!! And some of you might think that makes it Hornady ammo but its not. Only the actual bullet thats loaded into their cartridges and their powder load and work. Its def NOT Hornady ammo!!! Lmao.

Looks like them Green Meenies Did More Work Than You Expected, Aye??? Lol. They dont meet the guidlines for a AP Round But they DEF have enhanced penetration over standard lead ammo!!! But the are steel penetrator ammo so it is to be expected from them.

I do know that the m855 green tip will punch through a quarter inch steel at 200 yards out of a 16-in barrel with a 1 and 9 twist my rifle has a 1/7 twist at 16 in and honestly the biggest reason I bought a couple thousand rounds of this a year back is because the local shop went out of business and the guy pretty much had a fire sale with everything he only had 2,000 rounds of green tip but it balanced out to about six cents a shot. How could I say no to that?
