By that logic .243 is the best hunting round available. It's not equivalent. Punching through steel doesn't mean it can ethically kill an animal. .243 isn't "too small" for white tail, but scale up the animal. You shouldn't go elephant hunting with .243 just because it went through 3/8" steel.

@Lightning Strike If the speed and size of the projectile were the only factors to consider,- then a .17 mag traveling at 4040 fps at the muzzle would penetrate more than a 7mm mag traveling 3110 fps at the muzzle, or a 300 win mag traveling at 3290 fps. The mass, material, and design of the projectile must also be considered. Without knowing the details of each bullets construction, no one can accuratly predict the outcome of which caliber will penetrate a given material.
@user-SgtArmoroldtanker
@user-SgtArmoroldtanker 4 жыл бұрын
@Lightning Strike ok, I'd sure like to talk to that "old timer" and get him to demonstrate all that, I'm not sure how much of a "old timer" the guy is, but the .17 hmr came out in 2002. By the way, I own a 17, and I can tell you from first hand experience it will not penetrate a target like the one in the video, the tiny bullet disintegrates.
@jasonhull2163
@jasonhull2163 3 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t expecting the 243 to punch through either but I know for a fact a 300 win mag hits harder. Maybe bullet velocity really does play the biggest role in penetrating. This was a odd video but in a very good way.

If you add a dangling piece of chain to the six o'clock position the plate will stop swinging like a pendulum. You can tack weld the chain to the back of the plate in minutes. BTW that trick goes back to black powder log splitters where a length of chain keeps them from vanishing into the woods.

It's more about What the round is made out of not only the caliber. The caliber does play a factor, of course, but I've seen a 50 caliber standard ledcor Full Metal Jacket 660g Ball round At a hundred yards I believe it was a 3/8 in. Or a quarter inch. Hard Steel Target and it hit it dead center straight on and Made the whole Target it was connected to move a lot and in the slo-mo speed you see the bullet just hit it and fragment and bunch Bullet fragments and what look almost like a small Sparks for a second fly in every direction, but it doesn't even Dent the plate At all, it just leaves a scuff mark. You can tell it was hit by something, but it does not dented at all. But from the same distance same gun, same caliber using a black tip AP round 700 grain. Projectile it slice right through like a hot knife through butter and kept going.

@@phillhuddleston9445 yes, that's my point. full metal jackets with high velocity have at least a chance of penetrating. Of course there are rounds that would have little problem with this, say the tungsten rounds and high grade steel core rounds available for 50 bmg, you notice, even thogh the bmg went through, it did not make a clean hole. Some of the penetrator rounds would. Of course, what one can get on the open market and what is available to the military are two different things. However, there is a guy on the tube that has access to the military rounds and has demonstrated them. If they want, they can shoot through concrete walls.

You notice that the holes are bigger than the bullet, this is occurring through what's called "Adiabatic Shear", there's computer simulations on youtube showing how tank cannons do this to armor. Since this is "High Hardness Armor" or HHA, it easily does what's called "Plugging". Especially with the .243, that hole is there because the steel turned into a plug that was thrown behind the target at a high speed. Polish Anti-Tank rifles were good at doing this, the plug would turn the armor into a bullet and hit the crew inside the tank!
