What made the .270 WSM famous two decades ago was that it took 140 grain bullets into the 7mm Rem Mag territory with speed and kinetic energy. Realistically, if hunting at ethical ranges of 450 yards or less, the classic .270 Winchester is all the skilled hunter needs. Thanks for another great video and Merry Christmas.

@@brianklamer3328 and that is exactly whats wrong with the.270 win. ever since it was introduced. Making people believe that they could cleanly (ethically) take animals at 450 yards and beyond. That's why it has wounded more than any other cartridge, EVER. Now I realize that buolotts are much improved today, but 450 yards, leaves room for serious havoc in it's wake. Agree even with the very mild 130gr soft points I load I can set a MPBR of 302 yards all day everyday with a regular old 270 Winchester. And that’s sacrificing 90 FPS from a more top end load just because it’s more accurate in my rifle. Hornady is doing everything it can to kill the 6.8 Western, because it is a competitor to the 7PRC. Because of that, most of your factory load options are Winchester based... Winchester isn't known for their awesome factory loading consistency or quality. The 6.8 western is an incredibly efficient cartridge, and turns into a real beast with hand loads. It does what it does with the lower recoil than comparable cartridges and with a short action. It really is a very good round, but the factory ammo options are letting it down for sure. I don't own a 6.8, but just wanted to throw that info out there. I have a 7 rem mag that works just fine for my uses.

The 6.5 PRC doesn't fit in a short action if you really want to use it to its full potential. The 6.8 W is undeniably better and fits in a short action just fine.

@@NuManXplore I picked up boxes of every ammo they offer. With my Browning X Bolt, the velocities I got were almost exactly what was promised. Unlike @hornady, they aren't selling ammo with velocities that are wrong because they cannot get reloader 26. I think Winchester's ammo covers a wide ranging array of bullets. I have not had a chance to do enough accuracy testing yet (my gun broke an extractor and Browning is fixing it) but the Factory 175g TGK seems the likely winner for my gun. I am about to start working on a lower recoil (130-140g bullets) load for my daughter.
@mountedpatrolman18 минут бұрын
I'd much rather have a 6.8 Western over 7prc. There are better choices in a long action, and you're getting very close to 7PRC performance in a short action. Plus your pushing heavier bullets at the same velocity and drop as 6.5PRC. 6.8W just makes the most sense to me for long range.

I bought a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 270 WSM back when the round first came out. I’ve got zero complaints about accuracy, reliability, or performance. Unfortunately, the fad didn’t really last making ammo difficult to find and very expensive for moderate performance enhancement over the standard 270.
@jaydunbar75384 сағат бұрын
The wsm line didnt have a fad issue, it had legal issues. Winchester was sued and lost for stealing the case design from a guy who had offered to sell them the design, so there is a huge royalty attached to anything Winchester does with a WSM now making them only support is as much as required. Which is unfortunate because they are excellent cartridges.

Inside typical hunting ranges the 270 is plenty. The 270 wsm is a fantastic cartridge. It fell out of favor quickly because of some patten legal issues that Winchester got into. Instead of fighting it they just dropped it. The 6.8 western is simply the 270 wsm with the shoulder pushed back and put in a rifle with a faster twist to use higher bc bullets. If I were buying a new rifle I’d opt for the 6.8 due to availability and wind drift.

Take a look at the bullet weights WTW, the 6.8W was designed off of the 270wsm case for heavy for caliber bullets, shot through a fast twist barrel. All three cartridges beat out the 6.5cm and 6.5prc. What all three convince me of is that the 30-06 really is the only cartridge you need for hunting medium/big game inside 500yds.

You should include wind drift in your charts. Drop is predictable, but wind isn’t. I think you may find that the higher BC numbers make a difference at even the shorter distances. 400 yards in a 15-20 mph range can be tough, as it might not be consistent over the full range and might be gusting. Better BC might make the difference between a good shot and a gut shot. You would have to run the calculations to see if that’s true in these cartridges.

This is why we have ammo shortages and a box of common ammo is over $40!! They keep inventing new cartridges that we don't need and people keep buying them and wonder why everything is so expensive. We do not need 5 different cartridges in the same caliber that are almost identical. The average Joe is not ever going to shoot past 300 yards and if he does, he will probably miss anyway. Range of a shot on an animal depends on accuracy. Once a rifle group goes over an inch it calls into question shot placement. For example if you are aiming for a brain shot or heart you really need the one inch group. I think to work out these cartridges it would take hand-loading. Like what is the case capacity for each, and what powder can be accessed to take advantage of the case? If the 6.8 has the shortest shoulder, but the heaviest projectiles, this skews the results. An enthusiast could get a 270win or 270wsm and put a fast twist barrel on which would improve the long range potential of the rifles with heavier projectiles. Then it would be a fair test.

The problem is buying a rifle in some new or obscure cartridge which never becomes popular. Then the cost of the ammo and scarcity will eat your wallet and/or you will have to reload, which will not necessarily save you money either, compared to buying popular rounds like the 270 from big box stores. This is why the 270 and 30-06 are the two most popular cartridges in South Dakota and Wyoming, followed by the 7 mm mag. according to the local gun shops and guides.

Gotta remember that the 6.8 Western's parent cartridge is the .270wsm. The .270wsm came out to give you more speed. I believe before all of the AI cartridges. The advantage of the 6.8 Western is the same advantage as the 6.5 cm. The shoulder is pushed back and it allows the use of longer more BC bullets. Only problem is there is only 2 brands of factory offerings. More offerings in the .270wsm. Plus the 6.8 Western shoots the same diameter bullet as the .270/.270wsm. Looking forward to seeing the accuracy comparisons.

I’m old and keep saying no more guns haven’t been batting 100% with that yet but this time I’m serious. I truly enjoy hunting and I speak of the total experience but seasons come but once a year and most are short so my current focus is to upgrade my reloading toys and optics learn how to shoot consistently and then reach out and touch things far far away . I started with lots of zoomies added to my father’s model 80 marlin .22 l may have purchased another.308 and scope and may get more zoomies for my Browning BLR 7mm rem mag. To date l have made some headway with the .22 but haven’t perfected my perfect load for the .308 and have not even started on the 7mm. I may die before I make a 1000 yards but I am living learning and enjoying every moment. I will never perfect the use of the toys I already have, never realize their full potential and never convince myself that a new toy won’t fix all that ails. Such is the circle of life and thankyou thank you thankyou for letting me live it.

I have a Remington SPS .270wsm and found that the Federal Premium Nosler Ballistic tip groups the best for my rifle. I definitely found that my rifle was very finicky when it comes to which brand it likes. I also added a limb saver to the barrel about 1” from the stock and was surprised how much it actually improved my grouping!Unfortunately FP discontinued the .270wsm Nosler ballistic tip from their line up!😤

For just deer hunting I have to stick with the good ole 270 win, just so much more readily available. The 270 wsm had a tough time getting start, I can’t remember the exact reason, but an event of some sort made it not super popular. The 6.8 western was basically Winchesters attempt to revive the wsm and modernize it with the twist rate change. I’d be interested in seeing if they can make a 150 grain load in 6.8 western, if it can be stabilized I think the numbers on that could be somewhat impressive. Also if the 6.8 western is gonna survive it needs to be adopted by more ammo manufacturers.

There are a lot of cartridges today that are little more than old standbys with slightly different packaging that offer very little if anything over cartridges we have had for a few decades already.

Is the feeding corrected for 270WSM? Have other companies adopted the 6.8 western? Does the 270 have the power to succeed if re-barreled with a faster twist?
@IamONaLIST36 минут бұрын
A couple of thoughts. 1. I am guessing the wind drift on the 6.8 is a bit better than the others. 2. Accuracy is these new cartridges (depending on rifle) seems to be better with factory ammo than some of the older cartridges. 3. Yeah if you have the 270 or other older cartridges there isn't a need to buy a new rifle. But for someone looking to get into long range shooting, hunting out west, or a new shoot in general, going with a newer cartridgenmay not be a bad idea.

Hey brother, really looking forward to your outlier barrel video. I actually ordered one myself but they don't have a lot of videos online showing the true capabilities of the barrel with factory ammunition or anything like that. The only thing I've been able to find is one guy with one set of hand loads shooting through the barrel, so your video will be very useful in that aspect of it

Jack O'Connor knew what he was doing.... for all practical purposes under 500 yards or so, why bother with the 'magnums"...? Most 'new' rounds are marketing exercises. Nothing invented after 1970 is "new" at all really.... It's just a way to get people to buy more rifles and expensive ammo. I would posit that the WSM would surpass the 6.8 with heavier bullets....twist rate is the factor here.... but again why bother? Come to that, with modern rangefinders a flat trajectory is not as important as it was, so a 270 or a 308 (or perhaps a 7mm/08) will do everything you need.

I bought a Tikka in 270wsm because it approached 270 wby speeds with 10 - 20 grains less powder. I should have looked at ammo availability before.... good thing I am a reloader and found some Norma brass... I am having fun with it.. If firearm manufacturers would just update the twist rates of older cartridges it would make the decision to go with a new cartridge harder.

Realistically, there are probably only about 7 or 8 rifle calibers and 5 or 6 handgun calibers needed. The rest are foofaraw. A lot of fuss over a few F.P.S. or less kick. Think how cheap ammo would be if all calibers were standardized in just a few choices.
@danblumel17 сағат бұрын
The best would be 270 wsm with a custom 8:1 twist barrel to use the higher BC bullets used in the 6.8 Western and reloaded, obviously not factory ammo. This would be my choice but went with 6.5 PRC instead and reload too.

Love the video should have done a wind drift chart i would bet the 6.8 out performs othe 2 easily. It was developed for long range hunting out west hence the name 6.8 western. In my opinion energy and wind drift is more critical for long range hunting than drop because drop is a constant if you know your load and velocities. The wind and person shooting is what in my opinion causes most misses at long range than drop if your load is as consistent as you can make it. Hand loading is the best way for consistent loads in my opinion also. Would not recommend people long range hunting with factory ammo. Just my opinion all.

I'm really happy with my 6.8 Western. I get half minute groups with my xbolt 2 speed spr. Awesome with a suppressor. The biggest advantage the 68 has over the wsm is you have better sectional density. Assuming the bullets are equally tough will give you better penetration.

Reloaders special and barrel lenght is key to get better velocities for both 6.8 western and the 270wsm 26 inch barrel is key and testing powders and seating depths find good brass to take the pressure and watch for pressure signs

6.8 was specifically designed for more energy at longer range. But that is accomplished by the heaviest bullet of the 3. The trade off is heavier bullet more drop.

270 win is great, 270 wsm is even better! But it's my understanding that the 270 wsm was patented, and there was some issue with manufacturers producing the cartridge. Not sure on the details. Maybe the reason for the 6.8? Maybe 6.8 better for long range hunting due to the longer bullet and twist? I love my 270 wsm for whitetail.

I would like to see the .338's and .358's compared. .338 Federal, .338 win mag , then the .35 whelen, .358 Winchester and 1 each of both calibers of your choosing to do more 3 cartridge comparisons.

If you want more energy down range, and less wind drift a heavy high bc bullet bleeds off far less energy. Modern chambers with the proper freebore length, clearances and lead angle make for more rifles than can shoot them more accurately. Also, ditching a pointless belt is always a good idea. I also have to ask, how many gun manufacturers would be in business and how many choices would we have in powders and bullets if everyone was shooting the 7.5 Swiss, which is the original “modern cartridge “

Tried everything. Sold it and bought a tikka veil in 7rem mag. 5/8 groups at 100 yards ya just can’t beat it. Although he browning was way more comfortable to shoot. Tikka needs a re design on their stocks

The 270 wsm is a good cartridge, kind of similar to the 6.5 rpm. Looks like plenty of ammo for it unlike 6.8 western. I’m more of a long action fan myself, though and I love .270. I’d like to see a 270 wby rpm, something that can do 7mm prc or rem mag numbers in a light wby rifle. Weatherby shows their 6.5 rpm 140gr accubonds beating 270 wsm and 7mm rem mag 140 grainers, so it’s still a bad boy.
