My shooting partner is running a 300 WM Lapua brass, Vithavuori, Federal Gold Medal match Mag primer, launching a 215 Berger Hybrid @3200 fps give or take. Kelbly action, custom reamer, Trigger Tech, Manners stock, Bartlien barrel, custom break. This rifle has been a shooter since day one. 1¼ " group, (3 shot) high ridge @ 725 yard's. At 1000 yard's shooting water filled milk jugs my 308 Win. 175gr SMK @2725 fps punched the jugs shaking it. We found the projectiles in the bank on the backside of the jug looking like banana's in shape. The 300 WM on the other hand was bursting the jugs of water and jumping 3 to 5 ft in the air. He has taken a few whitetail at that exact 725 target in season. Recoil is actually rather light. I should also mention the Bartlien barrel is a 30 incher. Still this set up with a NiteForce ATAC is absolute candy to look at and if the trigger man does his part, a laser to shoot.

So the whole weapon was purpose built around a new projectile but how would you know if the rifle/barrel would like those particular rounds? We all know to try several loads when initial testing to see what each prefers but not here. You're the pro's- I was just curious
@ryankoch395824 күн бұрын
The biggest reason we try several loads is because factory rifles have different twist rates and barrel harmonics, plus slight inconsistency’s in manufacturing tolerances in the throat and chamber mean it’s more of the style of bullet that you’re rifle likes. A heavy contour barrel and the big thing, the appropriate twist rate was used here for the 212’s so if everything was put together correctly there isn’t any reason it wouldn’t work. High end custom components really simplify the accuracy end and make load development a breeze, generally.
@jfess1911Ай бұрын
The Short Magnums of the early 2000's really come alive when loaded much longer than their SAAMI specs. My main dislikes of the WSM series come from trying to use a big case while keeping the COAL to a short 2.86": most of the bullet ends up stuffed into the case and there is no section of parallel freebore in the chamber to assure bullet alignment with the bore*. I like the idea of using a long bore-riding section to load longer and properly align the bullet. *For those who don't know, both the 6.8 Western and 6.5 PRC were designed to fix those problems. Both used slightly shortened the cases of their .30 cal predecessors (300 WSM and 300 RCM) and a longer overall length + added parallel freebore to allow more of the bullet to extend from the front of the cases.
@thepiedpiper-i7xАй бұрын
6.8 Western is in fact the necked down 7 RSAUM!
@jfess1911Ай бұрын
@@thepiedpiper-i7x Not quite, closer than the WSMs, but with a significantly longer overall length than the RSAUMS (2.955" vs 2.825"). TBH, I initially thought the same thing until I closely compared the SAAMI drawings. I suppose it would be accurate to say the 6.8 W was "heavily inspired by" the RSAUMS, which I had previously considered the best of the short mags in their SAAMI forms. Winchester had stubbornly avoided chambers with parallel freebore for decades and finally gave in on the 6.8 W.* The WSMs made the cases as large as possible, which meant reducing bullet projection from the case (head height). Win had always decided to just have a forcing-cone style chamber/throat. The compromise worked for marketing, since the WSMs held more powder and thus were faster than their slightly more accurate (or easier to tune) competitors. The magazine articles of the time fixated on that extra few fps velocity. * Well, the 308 Win had some fairly loose freebore, but it was based on the existing 7.62x51 and not really a clean-sheet Winchester design.
