My first car was a black '78 Trans Am W72. 4-speed w/ Hurst shifter and Hurst t-tops, power doors & locks... It was loaded with the available options. By the time I got the car in '94, the t-tops leaked like crazy and the rear floor pans were rotting out and the suspension was shot, but I loved every minute that I owned it. My dad and I rebuilt the top of the engine with just a little bit of a cam (Erson), put a performer intake and carb on it, upgraded the dual exhaust. It was still pretty slow, but still a head turner. For a teenage kid, it was awesome. I didn't realize what I had at the time and sold it when I was 22. I wish I still had it.

My first car was a 76 Firebird with a 400 and the formula hood. It was so rough the front leaf spring mount broke through the floorboard. I sent it to the scrap yard. Wish I had the money and knowledge that I have now to have fixed it.

I have the Esprit model 1978. I always liked Rockford files. I have had probably 40 cars, many classics. I am keeping this one. I had a customer who sent another intact Esprit to the wrecking yard. He bought another boat and his wife told him to get rid of it. I am different. She would be getting divorce papers.

I bought a Gold Special Edition Trans Am June 7th, 1978. I still own it. Over 45 years and still like new. All original except for water pump, master cylinder, and tires. Less than 40,000 miles. 400 TA 6.6, 3.42 gears. and a four speed Super T10 transmission. Drove from Alberta, Canada to Reno Nevada the first year, and Las Vegas the next. Sits all winter, and is like a new car every summer. I used to race light to light against any challenger. Lost only three times. Love this car!

The biggest mystery to me was the new front end treatment in 1979....James Garner was rumored to have preferred the 77/78 front end so they didn't update the Firebird for the last two seasons of the Rockford Files. I prefer the 77/78 front end myself.

I like the 77-78's a lot, but my favorite is the 79. I was 26 when the 79's came out with the new nose (and tail) and I thought it was the coolest, and I wanted one. But I already had a 77 Vette and couldn't afford a new car at the time. The 1979 Trans Am was a big sales success. They sold more Trans Ams in 1979 than any year in history, ever. My figures show 79 TA production as being 117,108. In comparison, the 78's sold 93,341, so a significant jump in TA sales for 79. Over the last 20 years, I've made up for lost time and have several 1979 Trans Ams. Bought them as projects while they were still cheap. So, I'm glad they made a lot of them 🙂 . I like James Garner too. Since he drove a Firebird in the show, and not a Trans Am, I can respect his choice. I could agree that the 77/78 nose looks better on a plain Firebird than a 79 nose. But to me, when you make it a Trans Am, it doesn't get any better looking than a 79.

"Smoky and the Bandit" caused Trans Am sales to explode. Everybody wanted a black Trans Am with the gold trim. Back 20-25 years ago you could get these for pennies but now values are going to the moon. Cheap ones now are usually beaten up or have a lot of rust on them. I've looked around for a 1980-81 Trans Am Turbo with a bad engine that I could drop a 350 into but even those are hard to find.

@@jamessharp9790 I'm not sure it's so easy to catagorize. As a "boomer" myself, who turned 20 in late 1972, I suggest that the 2nd gen F-bodies are definitely boomer cars too, since they were produced while many of us were in our 20's, when we were ready to buy new, sporty cars. So, now we relive our youth with them. I don't really care about the 1st gens, although I'm sure many boomers do, such as those a few years older than me. Sometimes age doesn't matter. These were appreciated north of the US boarder in Canada. In my home town the Pontiac dealer was also a car guy through and through. He ordered lots of Firebirds & Trans AM models just because he liked what Pontiac built. He moved every car or truck he brought in. As for European cars many were underpowered even as they handled very well. I've always preferred domestic cars & trucks.

I think the era where American cars were cool is far gone. It's all plastic these days. Yes modern muscle cars handle better, massive performance but the old school stuff has soul. You would be hard pressed to beat old American muscle cars for coolness. Maybe an old Aston or Jag from the UK.

Well said. I wanted a 77 so badly new. Every dealer had them but the fit and finish was really poor. Was massively disappointed. Not a Pontiac issue, a GM issue at that time.

I live in the northeast and the snowflake wheels did not hold up very well. The road salts caused them to pit and the paint to flake off. But oh, they looked great on those Florida cars.

a few days turning a wrench, adding a bigger cam, head work, aluminum intake, headers, electric fan, and some 3.73 gears with a lil stall and you had a tire fryer that definitely was no slouch red light to red light or in the twistys.

Those late 70s Trans Ams are hot looking cars and are so muscular and fast for their time. The next classic American muscle car of the later times that should have its value increasing in bigger numbers soon is the Fox Body Mustang, with the 1987-1990 model years being the most valuable due to the exterior styling and the horsepower numbers of the 302.

Thats my fiancés favorite year & color as well, 79 nocturne blue ttop with blue decals, I plan on buying a 78 black & gold w72 with fisher ttops, my 2nd favorite is the black & gold 79-81 ttop with the cutter wheels or whatever they call them off of the 81 s/e & pace cars but in gold like from bandit 2. Add a 73 sd455 in white w/blue decal, an 02 ttop ws6 in black or dark blue, & an 84 t/a in either black & gold or blue with the firebird wheels. & that's my dream t/a garage, would also like a black 68 gto in the collection. I plan on buying a black 78 within the year, & it would be nice if my fiance liked the black & gold so I could get her a 79 to match but she's stuck on the nocturne blue.

They actually put the Oldsmobile 403 in a bunch of them cause they had the extra engines n were cheaper to get them then to build the 400 Pontiac at least from 77-78 and only know cause that’s what mine had so I did some research.. Gr8 video and history TY!!!
@grand73am
@grand73am 2 ай бұрын
My understanding is that the Olds 403 started being used in the Trans Ams in California only in 77 and 78. The Pontiac 400 couldn't pass the emissions in California, so the 403 was substituted, so they'd still have some cubic inches under the hood. Pontiac had already decided to discontinue the Pontiac 400, due to its higher emissions and poorer gas mileage. So, the last Pontiac 400's were produced and stockpiled in late 1977, like November or December, which was early in the 1978 model year. Those would be the last 400's. They hoped they would last through 1979, but 78 sold a lot of TA's and used up most of those 400's. There were only about 8300 400's left for 1979, and they sold more TA's in 79 than ever before or since. So, they decided to sell the rest of those 400's only in 4 speed manual TA's and Formulas until they ran out. The automatic cars, which were the vast majority of 79 TA's, received the 403 Olds nationwide.

Dude, I know I miss them so much. My favorite car of all time are the Black LS1 4th gen Trans Ams. I was car shopping last year and my dad told me if I ever wanted to get the T/A I wanted back in hs I had better hurry. I didn't believe him about the prices shooting up. I was shocked when I started looking at them. But I coughed up the money and finally got my Black 2000 Ws6. I'm so happy with it. Trans Ams are amazing.

The 1977-1978 Trans AM still looks a fresh design even 45 years later. These taken care of would outlast the plastic junk in the road. Did you GM premised Burt Reynolds a new Trans AM every year for life. but reigned on their offer when the bean counters came in. Burt Reynold and Smoky and The Bandit made this car famous. Id it wasn't for Smoky and thr Bandit Trans Am would be dead by 1980 due to CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy)

well 1977 was the 50th anniversary of Pontiac so they did the gold edition and also the first Smokey & The Bandit movie helped sales Burt Reynolds was given a car as a thank you for the movie and that was sold at Barrett Jackson car auction in Jan 22 for 495,000 dollars a base trans am that year listed for $8,100 roughly $2,961 more than a Toyota Celica of the same model year which was the end of the first Gen of Celica oh and both cars were rear wheel drive oh and from 71-76 you could get a heavy duty 455 V8 engine in the Trans AM you couldn't later due to stricter emissions rules and a Trans am equipped with that engine went 0-60 MPH in around 8 seconds and a Quarter mile drag time of 16.4 seconds
