It is true that the Soviets have helped a lot of left governments mostly because of the hostility they faced from the US. Cuba is a great example for that...so if you say that the US was just doing their part in the cold war the cold war is over...it ended in 1991. What about all the meddling after the cold war? The military industrial complex and their problems are pretty ease to understand. When a country's defence industry is privatised the corporates engaged in research and production of defence equipments and the military will have to find a market for their products and like every other private company they need to make a profit for the huge initial investments they have made... The only contractor these companies in the US can sell to is the US govt. And to other parties the US government allows. like every other big corporate in America they have immense lobbying power and what would corporates who are manufacturers of weapons want the worlds richest country to do?? Be in a state of perpetual war..... with an exorbitant defence budget which helps keep the demand and stock prices of Lockheed and Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Boeing and others high. I wonder how these bases operate. Do they project influence in the country they reside in? Are they there solely for the protection of the country they reside in, via alliance? Both? It's more complicated of course. Nonetheless, interesting to think about.
@firebirdgaming35952 жыл бұрын
Both, and more. It's a projection of influence and a sort of co-operation policy. It's truly a unique system that no other country has truly set up (China is trying and will probably begin their base-building process soon-ish). It's an interesting research topic, and I recommend that people who are interested do some research of their own.

While I disagree with a lot of US foreign policy, let's not ignore the carrot. I think for a lot of countries, having a US military base pretty much makes them immune to foreign invasion (as a German, it allowed us to pretty much exclusively focus on local economy and stability). The other idea is that any nation which seeks to counter the US directly, has to first match its current military output before they can fire a shot at the US. And at the moment, most countries economies will break if they try. But at it's heart the US has effectively been fighting a war of attrition against all its rivals continuously for 80 years. And I think even if China's economy overtakes the US (and demographics seem to indicate they'll slow down), I think that the current administration is trying to form a global compact of democracies, with the US still taking a leadership role, but reducing its decision making and financial stake. It'll pretty much be what it is now, North America, Europe, SK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and fairly soon India, plus maybe Taiwan. And let's face it from a resource perspective the US, Canada, and Mexico is the most stable place in the world. (Russia is too cold and doesn't have the population, and China has to import most of their energy and raw materials). Also if you consider the fact that in the last 25 years, the US has had its worst recession since 1930, 9/11, fought 2 disastrous and expensive wars, had a reality show demagogue as president, a pandemic, a majority -> minority flip (white conservative Christians are slowly becoming the minority) and now another recession. Yet, its still the best positioned nation in the world. So I think US hegemony is here to stay, at least for the time being. Although I think at this point most Americans want to get the hell out of the middle east.

My Answer To The Far-Left And Far-Right After my time in the U.S. Army, I protested the Viet Nam War. When Ronald Reagan supported the contra-war in Nicaragua, I helped organize a team of veterans to go into the war zones there, and I went with that team. When George Bush invaded Iraq, I wrote extensively against that. Then, as I became more educated about the ways of the world and some of my youthful idealism began to slip away, I realized that the world is essentially a place where the competition between nations, like the competition between animal species, really is about the survival of the fittest. I also realized that despite our mistakes and misguided actions, the U.S. and most of our allies in Europe and elsewhere still have the best social and economic systems. And, in a world where "king of the mountain" is still the name of the game, having a strong military is imperative, especially if our democratic republic, and others like us, are going to survive. And, just as police forces are necessary in all civilized societies, so too is it necessary for there to be a nation or group of nations, like NATO, that can police and defend our world. Perhaps someday the world will evolve out of this necessity. But as long as there are authoritarian nations like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, and as long as international organizations like the UN are unable to stop these and other members from misbehaving, there will be a necessity for democratic nations like ours to stand against those who would commit aggressive and unlawful actions, like Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine. For Americans and others on the far-left and far-right, who act like they hate the United States government, the real key is not just to hate our country and its government for its mistakes but to work to improve it and help it to avoid making those mistakes. And yes, just as local police departments in cities and towns in our nation need to be regulated, so too do our military and economic actions around the world. But that does not mean that we surrender to the will of nations who would love to replace us as the 'king of the mountain' or policeman of the world. This is why we have troops in 148 nations - most of whom invited us and want us there to protect them from those nations - and why we have a large military and military budget to enable us to do that. So, for the good of our nation and the good of our allies and friends, we must continue just as we are doing now. And hopefully, with the help of all Americans, and our allies, we will do it right. JRB

This is such BS. Just because a US military aircraft landed somewhere once does not mean that foreign base is a US base. Almost all of the foreign US military bases on your list are not US bases. You want transparency for the US military? You don't get to know everything about the US military because you are not a general, member of congress, or the President. Many researchers believe the US military itself doesn't know how many bases they have? Then how do the people on those bases get paid? I guess you didn't think of that. Maybe you should stick to anthropology? Better a US empire than a Russian, Chinese, or Iranian empire. What those foreign bases represent are jobs. Every foreign base I ever went to had hundreds of civilian foreigners working on the base getting paid by the US military. Somehow you left that out of your "comprehensive" report. With cruise missiles, 11 aircraft carrier battle groups, 10 amphibious assault ships, and 20 stealth B2 bombers that can refuel in flight and hit anywhere on the earth we don't need an airstrip in the Galapagos or Ecuador or half of the places on your fake list. Seen the news on Ukraine lately? That's what happens to all of Europe if we dismantle the US military. Then China takes Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam, and Iran takes Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and then Iran would try to take Israel where they would get their butts kicked. Any country President that does not want a US base anymore can simply ask the US to leave and we will leave just like we left the Philippines. Then, after we left, China built some islands and put airstrips on them right next to the Philippines, hehe...

A lot of misinformation and inflammatory language in this video. The US does not control (military/economic or otherwise) the nations they have bases in. The quite literally have to pay a lease fee to the host nation. This does not fit the definition of an imperial power. The UK owns Diego Garcia and there is a joint US/UK base there. The claim that the US "conspired" with the British to expel the population is pure nonsense. It's British controlled territory, they make the calls. Many nations want US bases b/c it guarantees protection. Attacking a nation with a US presence is tantamount to an act of war on the US itself. Poland requested a US military base and one was added officially in 2022. Bases closures in Germany were unpopular with the local population due to the devastating effect it had on their economy. This is a blatantly biased report with many inaccuracies and outright lies.
@nicholasng9814 Жыл бұрын
They pay a lease fee meaning they are paying countries off. Why would a country pay another country it is "protecting". All they want is world domination. When war hits and they hope it happens. They want to be the one on top. They dont want any 2nds or 3rds. They want to make sure they are well ahead of any form of opposition.
