What I am seeing is an increased interest in kung fu and its practical application. As MMA fighters get better, I keep seeing things that "would never work."

I'd say not enough Wing-Chun people are sparring, but the actual percentages are different around the world.

I do like that you said 90% not all. Most of that 10% won't fight anyway. Unless they feel a real threat in which case they won't be planning on fighting they will target vital spots and break/dislocate bones and joints. Neutralize the threat as fast as possible. Also people with very high level of skill will spar the static movements are to train sensitivity and reaction time. They are not training to fight they are training to defuse and or Neutralize the situation not wast energy fighting. Sparing in some martial arts is extremely dangerous and only highly skilled practitioners contact spar. They are not training for sport. Alot of what they are learning is against rules in sport fighting. However, I think over 90% of people teaching have no business doing so.

You're not talking about the same 10% as the video. Aliveness is essential to martial arts, even if you're looking to train for self-defense/no-rules scenarios. There's some danger in building up muscle memory from sparring in a safe (for a particular combat sports ruleset or for protecting your partner), but there's far more danger in never sparring with freedom for your partner to resist and engage in ways you haven't specifically prepared for. You don't have to be highly skilled to spar. Or put more realistically, you can't get highly skilled if you don't spar when you're low-skilled.

Personally I got into Wing Chun for self defence reasons then as I was disciplined in the system from day one I got into the practice. Because of the attention to detail and balance in every movement fighting was not on my mind to perfect each movement. I had to remind myself at times how does this relate to fighting if I am not fighting. I think it was about 4 years in a few lessons a week I found myself in a street fight. After that experience I believed it was a real fighting style and I became more motivated. And for me I have just become a better students over the years to improve what I do. If I for example I wanted to fight in the cage I would of trained differently but I am happy do improve in what I do as it makes sense. No need to prove in a fight with anyone. Everyone has their interest why they practice. But agreed there is a lot of bull out there in all walks of life.@@DynastyMMA

Teachers must teach sparring for real time application. They have to insist that the students not brawl and use the techniques learned. Static drilling with a partner helps to develop tools. Once these are sharpened they should pressure test against resistance so as to learned to flow from technique to technique against a non-compliant partner. Under no circumstances should flailing and brawling be allowed.

How I see TMA is the art of discipline, it gives you something to keep doing. Training which would never be used in a fight bc it’s for body movement. That’s me tho maybe I’m wrong.

That’s one aspect of training. There are many benefits and uses.
