In comparing the notes of a chord to the individual components of a cheeseburger, a student gains a clear understanding of how chords are constructed, the relative importance of each note in the chord and what is the relationship between chord tones and passing tones or extensions. This lays the groundwork for future episodes in which we explore the way that chords are combined to form common chord progressions, and how an improviser uses them as a framework for melodic construction.
