I got my first German Shepherd by accident. I wanted a dog to protect me when I was alone at home, walking or biking alone, etc. My boyfriend traveled a lot at the time. It wasn't in me to consider this breed. It was recommended that a German Shepherd would fit the bill. A friend of a friens was a trainer and he had just bought a 7 month puppy to resell/train. He came from a reputable breeder from Germany. I asked if I could try him out for the weekend, he said "yes, because then you'll buy him." That's exactly what happened. He bonded in 15 minutes and that's no exaggeration. The same person was his trainer, too. I automatically knew the important of good training. I'm now on my 4th and 5th German Shepherd. Great breed. My last trainer trained NAVY SEAL dogs. I've only had one Shepherd that difficult at first, but he came around and I never questioned his loyalty. He was also a great deterrent to those who could mean harm...they all were. .

I had a rescue mixed Shepherd (where the Shepherd traits were dominant) my family had rescued and everything you've said is absolutely true. Training never ends. **You have to do the work.** I will say the thing I admire about Shepherds is that "an old dog can learn new tricks". We started dominance and obedience training in the middle of his life and it was received very well. If you put in the effort the results will come in.

From the experience I’ve had with adopted dogs all being 3+ years they all learned new things, maybe it has more to do with trusting too, like dogs that been through shit they praise when we take good care of them and just wants to do their best. The most loyal dog I had was one I got him at 5yo, scared to life of people specially men and with time he turned almost like a guard dog, no one could yell at me that he would barricade me with his body and on the street if someone had bad intentions he would change his posture, he always knew when it could be dangerous or when to relax around people 🥲 miss him to this day

i've owned gsd's before but the biggest training lesson was learned from my gsd mix who passed at 5 years old. i got her later on in her life and her previous owner was someone who should not own dogs. before i knew about her issues, the original deal was that i would take her while her owner found a new place. as the months went by and he failed to pay for her spay, hernia surgery, etc., as he promised and i began to notice how poorly she was doing mentally, i contacted him and said i would be keeping her. he didn't even argue or sound sad. she knew how to sit, lay down, and was house broken but no recall training or socialization whatsoever. absolutely none. she was fearful and on her way to being aggressive. i worked really hard with her to correct her previous owner's failures and the first year was insanely rough financially and mentally... i often wondered what i got myself in to but i kept at it and her and i put a lot of time in. whole weekends were spent at the training facility just hanging out and having fun while training. obviously that isn't necessary for everyone but we had the opportunity to do it so we did. she got to the point where she wasn't a nervous wreck on a walk and became such a happy and loyal dog. we eventually stopped going to the training facility but the training didn't stop. i could always see remnants of the issues she had but we worked on it every day. put the work in from the get go. if you find that you can't, find someone who can.

Great video! I hope it prevents tragic misplacement of GSD's. People need to know what a commitment a GSD is, forever. Had our amazing boy for 13 amazing years. My biggest piece of advice for those considering a GSD....make sure your pup stays with mom/litter until 8-10 weeks old. Hint: Pups whelped outside, naturally prefer to go to the bathroom outside.

Very well explained! Its basicially like learning a musical instrument: “repetition is the mother of succes”..people see the concert and it all looks so “easy” at the moment, however they dont see the hours of - blood, sweat and tears, nor the disciplined practising (training for Lucy) for years to make it look that “easy”.. You can see Lucy is so well trained: Training doesnt stop after an 8hr working day: there is a 24/7 love, care, devotion in this.. Lucy’s character at itself has a natural playfulness, curiosity and drive to serve..she is just a the right place there with you!❤️😊👍🏼 ps. i bet you cut out all the cuddle moments in between the scenes..😂🤣😜

I got a German Shepherd a year and a half ago. I got him from a very young couple who got him from a breeder and as much as I love him dearly I can honestly say that I regret it. He is 2yrs old now and he wasn't socialized so he is over the top reactive towards pretty much everything. He is potty trained but that is the only training he has. I've tried to give him basic training but I'm not dog trainer and it just isn't working at all. He also has more energy then I could have over imagined, I can't keep up with him in any way since I'm not a young guy anymore and I have recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I should have done my homework before I jumped into this but I didn't and I'm truly regretting it. To be honest....i don't know how to deal with him. He's also why overly protective of me. Meaning my wife can't even kiss me goodbye when she leaves for work, she can't get too close to me or he literally tries to seriously attack her. The same thing happens if friends come over....if they get too close to me or try to even shake my hand ect he just loses it and tries to attack them as well. Had a trainer work with him for a pretty short time because he bit him twice then he basically said he can't train him and said he was untrainable. I don't know what to do....I love him dearly but it's just getting worse as time goes by.

Training a German Sheppard is not optional, and never stops. Just building trust and confidence takes a lot of work. In return you get a fantastic partner. And I do praise responsible owners that understands this and showcases good behavior like you do, because there is a lot of stigma, and they can be very protective. Training, training and then some more training.

I rescued my boy, Jax, last October. He had been surrendered twice before. The last time being a middle of the night drop off which the shelter informed me was never a good thing. What had he done? No answers. Msny attempts to contact the last owner (via info on his micro chip) for any helpful info went unanswered. Jax is an absolutely gorgeous 90lb 2 1/2 year old (vets guess) mahogany and tan male. He's a responsive, to most commands - sit, stay, lie down, stay, come, etc...."most of the time". That's all wonderful but, he literally has a "PREY DRIVE FROM HELL". Squirrels, stray cats turn him into a beast from hell and any commands or corrections (prong collar, etc) are totally ignored once he's switched on. He's oblivious to corrective collars which have zero effect once he's in prey mode. Ive purchased a Dogtra E Collar but don't plan to use it until i fully understand how to use it properly. He's met a variett of other dogs and has gotten along fine except that he's been fence aggressive with a couple neighbor dogs? I'll also add that i also have a loving, elderly, 16 year old cat that i keep separated by various door wire barriers. Thankfully Jax hasn't shown aggression toward the cat since the first few days. They both sleep in the bedroom with me at night and can see each other but remain separated by barriers. Im just afraid to allow contact for fear of what could happen. My guess after studying body types, size, movement, body lines head to tail, etc is that Jax is West German Showline. Other than being male he looks and moves very much like your dog. Hard to explain but im determined to be this great dog's last stop no matter what happens. Some would say im being unfair to my elderly cat who's been with me 16 years. Perhaps i sm? The cat sleeps in my arms and has full tin of the house at night as Jax is confined behind a barrier by the head of my bed. During the day the cat has the full bedroom with a window separated by the barrier from the rest of the house. Btw, I'm 78 years old so this young GSD is definirly keeping me active. He has a big, fenced in back yard with lots of running room -70 yards+ and plenty of squirrels. Thanks for letting me describe my situation. Any helpful suggestions or comments id love to hear.😅❤

You have made by far the best video I've seen - and I've watched many. Thank you. The one attribute of a shepherd that I haven't seen anywhere is the enormous emotional bond they have with loving owners. Also how tricky they can be. : ) My family had one for 14 years. I made sure he had a comfortable place to sleep (he always loved his crate - after a couple of weeks the door was never closed.) My one rule was he wasn't allowed on the furniture because of the shedding and the fact that he loved mud. We would leave the house and come home to find him pretending to be asleep in the corner of the room but on the sofa would be the perfect outline of his body. He honestly believed he had fooled us! I so want another shepherd but am a bit nervous as I am a widow now and older. Do you think I need the strength of my youth to train another one?

Hey Maxine, thank you for your lovely comment. We both know that having another GSD would be amazing for you. Hi! I'm going to be getting my 1st GSD in a few months and I had a couple questions. First, when you socialize do you let the dog interact with everyone or train her to focus mainly on you and not get distracted? I've heard both so I'm not sure how to go about it. Also how do you train her to focus on you so intently? It's like nothing else in the world matters to her except you which has to feel amazing! How do I train my future Gsd to focus on me? Thanks!

Hey April, we socialised Lucy from the day we got her. Other dogs of all shapes and sizes as well as kids of all ages. This to me was really important as Lucy is always out and about with us. Lucy has a good level of prey drive for a family dog so that helps with training because she wants to work. I invested into a great trainer who showed me some stuff and I applied it every day and still do. Training your dog is like going to the gym. What you put in, is what you get out. Thanks for the great question. I'm going to do a video on socialisation soon 😊

I am hoping to buy a GSD in 2 years and have been binge-watching all training/GSD related content for the past 2 months (never too early to prepare)! I aspire to reach Lucy's level of obedience with my future floofer. I'm curious whether dedicating 4 months would be enough to training would be enough (for basics). There's a small window when I graduate from college and transition to the workforce, and I want to use that time to own a GSD puppy. Of course, it won't be the only time I train, as I want to take advanced obedience classes in the future as well. However, after 4 months, I can only spend 1 hour daily to walk/train, with the weekends free to focus more on the pup. (And yes, there will be someone at home all the time to care for the pup, just not me). I would greatly appreciate any opinions/advice!

I live in Florida where we have no parks like you have to take Lucy to. We tried to take her to a dog park and a very irresponsible owner came in with his male pitbull that was not neutered. His dog was just interested in mating with a female. He came after my Grace and he started to attack her, so I strepped in between. Grace is my baby and helping my walk this journey of the loss of my only child! I was not allowing a pitbull to attack her. I would die for her! It was a bad experience and I got bit by the pitbull. The owner did nothing! Calling the police did nothing. You have to call animal control that is 30 miles away. No more dog parks for us! It's been difficult to get our Grace socialized here. We have taken her to pet stores and started to take her to restaurants that allow dogs in their outside patio areas but then the whole global pandemic hit and we haven't been anywhere. I have no family left here in Florida, as I lost my son and my mom in 2016, so no one comes to the house. We have a shih-tzu mix that she is used to playing with. I'm more worried about her socialization around children and adults. I so wish we had parks like where I see you with Lucy! She's a beauty! Do you have any suggestions for us for Grace?

Hey Elamine, Firstly Im really sorry to hear about your family and your pup getting attacked by a Pit bull. There is an incompetent owners everywhere that shouldn't own dogs. I have an idea that might work. Do you have a instagram account for your pup or a personal one? That is a great way to connect with other German Shepherd owners on make friendships online and to meet like minded GSD lovers like you. You will be surprised how many could be in your area. Here in Sydney we meet up all the time to let the pups play. Most people as well are experienced owners and can spot a problem before it happens. Maybe you could get in contact with a local group for socialisation?

Yup. People can be so damn lazy they don't want to put in the work. Exact same idea with fitness and nutrition, or anything worth having, IMO. Generally, no such thing as a quick fix. All they see is the end product and don't really understand the process/time/commitment/etc. Good on ya mate (I'm from the US, am I allowed to say "mate"?? 😂). I'm really happy to see someone being honest about this. I can only imagine how many of these pups end up in shelters because their owners didn't take the time and put in the work, and they blame it on the pup, like it's the dog's fault. Keep it coming buddy, I'm thinking of getting a GSD as my next doggo.

I think this advise is for any potential dog owner. I have a 10 month old golden retriever male and to train them is a lot of work! Having a golden there’s the idea that oh they’re so easy to train, but I don’t see that. It takes work! Yes they’re smart but often times he will outsmart me to get his way! It takes a lot of dedication, time and work to train him. I want him to be trustworthy in all situations to be able to take him places without worry. Training is also important for small breeds bc often times you see the training neglected in small breeds. But it’s still necessary in my opinion! They can still do damage if untrained regardless of how small. Just my two cents! Are German Shepherd kid friendly? Always been a bit intimidated by the breed.

Very good video. I have American showlines and West German showlines and crosses of the two. All this is good advice. It is great to rescue dogs, but if you want to have a higher chance of success be willing to put down a few dollars for a good one. You can do wonders with a rescue dog. My first one was rescued and from Czech lines, and she was a great dog. But the level of chill that these show line dogs have is way more useful for a pet.

Hey thanks for the great comment. I'd love a Czech line one day they are amazing. Your a very experienced gsd handler and yes the showlines are great for pets. Do you have a preference between showlines?

People don’t know that German shepherds are very hard to own and train to act like a well behaved well mannered house pet whether they look like it or not they also require a lot more than training expensive food, hip and joint medication, weekly brushing, and they also need 2 to 4 HOURS of exercise a day and there’s also more...a lot of German shepherds also have severe mental problems that can only be curved with training like aggression, separation anxiety, and just plain anxiety 😬 so those are just a few reasons to not get a German Shepherd unless you do ALOT of research and know a good trainer

@Lucythegermanshepherd
@Lucythegermanshepherd 4 жыл бұрын
Hey great question. I think as long as you're willing to learn and put the time and effort in, you can get a gsd. I know lots of first time owners who are amazing gsd handlers. You will do great, just teach your self, use youtube, and get a trainer to help you

I think you need to stay on point in your videos. It’s fine if you want to say GSD takes a lot of time to train but I don’t know why you are explaining the different things that you need to train your dog like potty training and name recognition. I also watched your other video about GSD as a first time dog owner, is one of the first things I really need to know is the different lines of GSD? Maybe it’s good to know later on but I rather learn at a high level for example if it is a bad idea to get a GSD if I have no experience owning a dog, what are some things that makes GSD a good or a bad breed compared to other breeds for first time owners. Good luck with your videos and nice dog by the way.

VERY USEFUL VIDEO! BLESSINGS! We should educate people,( like you did great job ) before they get a GSD or any dog ! This will avoid many heartbreaking stories for animals end up in the KILLING SHELTERS or other situations! I ALWAYS have RESCUE ANIMALS but most animals in SHELTERS they are there cause people FAIL THEM !!! Because like you said they think they buy from the shelf cute puppy who will do right away everything like on video! AGREE MILLION TIMES with the teaching people...Before!!!! I would suggest also CESAR MILLAN videos for all who want to learn! First We have to learn !!!! I love any ANIMALS DEARLY and I like to learn to always about them and PLEASE if you can CONSIDER RESCUE GSD or other non pure breed! All they LOVE YOU UNCONDITIONALLY AND ABLE TO LEARN SAME IN THE RIGHT LOVING UNDERSTANDING PATIENT FAMILY!!! Don't BUY A PET ONLY CAUSE SPARE MOMENT DECISION OR CAUSE THEY CUTE OR OTHER REASON! THAT IS COMMITMENT AND RESPONSIBILITY AND LOVE! DON'T CONTRIBUTE TO.....KILLING HELPLESS ANIMALS CAUSE PEOPLE FAIL THEM FOR DIFFERENT REASONS!!!!

I had two female "GSD" from about '97-'11. Best dogs I could ever have asked for! They were both good with ppl and great with children. Both of them saved my life on a couple different situations. Too much to try to explain here, but if I'm ever in a position to get another mutt, it will be a female shepherd! Non-negotiable! Unfortunately, cancer took both of them.

I may be one of those responsible for you uploading this video. I messaged and asked who Lucy’s breeder was, not because I thought I’d be getting an “off the shelf” Lucy but because I have seen lots of bad examples of GSD’s from bad breeding. Many with physical issues i.e, hip dysplasia, exaggerated sloped backs and myelopathy and also behavioural issues. It’s good to see a healthy example with a great temperament such as Lucy.

To be honest there are bad dog owners and good dog owners and both camps have big dogs or small dogs. small dog owners should be held to the same standard large dog owners are. I would almost advocate that to own a dog you should have to show some kind of competence or be willing to learn how to look after dog in a responsible way. For the welfare of the dogs concerned. distrust of large dog breads is the fault of irresponsible dog owners not the dog themselves.

Dude, why are you uploading at 3am? I thought I lived nutty hours ... (well I am replying at 4.00am LOL) .... Try having two! The older one is picking up bad habits from the little one and the little one isn't picking up even half of what the older one knows ... But you're right, you do need to be doing training consistently forever is so true - one of mine is an Assistance Dog and she does her job brilliantly, the other one is just a dumb puppy LOL She's adorable, but she's doing the puppy thing - and as you know GSD's don't do things by halves, so she's my 'tiny terrorist' ... the little piranha is teething at the moment, so she's chewing anything she can - and even though I've got 7 teething toys, my desk or her older sister is more entertaining to her for chewing on than her actual chew toys *sigh* ... But Janan is 6.5yo and has hip and elbow dysplasia so needs to retire from being a Assistance Dog, Juliet is here to be trained up to succeed Janan upon retirement ... And even though you went through a lot of things I agree with, some of it doesn't apply to me because I need different things from my dog than if she was just a pet, I agree with all of your early development stuff though - good stuff dude ... Covid has wreaked havoc on socialisation though, that sucked ... I'm lucky though, the kennel that I got Juliet from is running their own Puppy Preschool (one of the breeders is a vet, so she at least knows how puppy school works), and they're doing that even though they're all too old for it if it was conventional, but seeing as none of their pups have been able to do it - and because none of us could get our Pedigree Cert's until we could prove they were fully vaccinated (so making sure we're being responsible), we can be comfortable knowing we're not exposing out dogs to anything nasty from one of the other puppies ... And I'm so lucky I can do this, I don't know if other kennels are doing it - probably not because they don't have someone to do it ... I really am lucky, because i got Juliet 2 weeks before the lockdown, (ouch) - we still have to do the social distancing thing, but we're going to be on open acreage outdoors - but yeah, point being, I feel really sorry for people like me who got a pup just before covid or the pup they'd been waiting on came of age to leave while Covid was in full swing - I'm lucky I'm going to get that socialising, even though it's later than I would have liked, but there was no options to do it earlier, nothing is open, not puppy clubs, not obedience clubs, nothing, and finding just random strangers dogs and asking if she can have a sniff and play is a bit of a dumb thing to do (great idea if you wanna get abused though LOL) ... but at least I have an option - there's a lot of people who haven't had and still don't have a way to socialise their dog properly .... I talk a lot ... Lucy is GORGEOUS! I'd love so much to catch up and meet and to let the 3 dogs go swimming together, but alas, you're in a different state to me (I'm in SE QLD), such is life ... still I'm happy I stumbled upon your channel!! If you read this, well done - I don't seem to know how to write short comments - I write books!!!
