Had 2 intact GSD males in my 20’s in the 1970’s, at different times, but only realize now they were both working line. One died in boarding at Vet, while I was on vacation, of a then new 🦠Parvo. Got another who I finally had to donate to the NOPD because I knew he needed more than I could give him working full time & it wasn’t safe with him digging out, escaping. Gave him to NOPD & he found his place on the bomb squad where he excelled until his death. Have one now, neutered, a rescue, who is the opposite of the first 2. Calm, sweet, goofy, smart, obedient & more. Even the look & color pattern is different. Enjoyed‼️

I have been feeding raw a very long time. Learned it from a northern grey wolf sanctuary director in 1991. They fed their wolves head to tail animals. She helped me get ratios of organ, muscle connective tissue, tripe etc. My presa was 105 lb and she lived to 16. My pitbull we just lost last year was 17. The times I had to go to the vet for rabies shot as you are stuck doing that for the registration. She was 13 and the vet complemented me on how well I was brushing her teeth. I told her I had never, not once, ever, brushed my dogs teeth. Honestly other than being worn a bit from yrs of use they were bright and clean all the way to the gums. Nthe gums were also super health. Until my dog started the process of dying she had never been to the vet for any aliment ever. Just rabies and once to ensure she was clear for worms. I don't feed any regular carbs except as treats seasonally. I will throw a few berries in the feed when they are in season. Same as wolves will eat b Ueberries raspberries when they are in season and happen by them.

Thank you SO MUCH FOR this conversation! Learned so much that I can't even state all the points now. I'm getting ready to welcome our new puppy in few days. Found this channel for dog training tips. I feel ready now after watching millions of videos in different channels and finding the ones that fit my philosophy of dog training to train my new dog. Your Channel is one of them. Love your understanding of dog nature, behaviour and psychology. BUT I was still confused about feeding my pup. Once upon a time we fed raw food. Then human food and scraps from table. Then kibble. Now I know we're going back to roots. My puppy's gonna eat raw 100%. Thank you again for all the information and knowledge! P.S. I asked more about what my puppy's fed now with the breeder. They're hunters so he's fed wild animals meat. They were cooking at start and then vet adviced them to give it raw. He was like less hassle for you to cook for all those little piggies lol. So I'm SO happy my puppy is getting the very best from the very start and I'm gonna keep up with raw diet to give him the chance to have the healthiest and longest life possible ❤

Really, really enjoyed this podcast and learned too! All of your videos are great and you are doing amazing things! I have a lab that supposedly came from back yard, bird dog breeders and was too much for the people that got her. She has what used to be a rare, now becoming way more prevalent disease called “Wilson’s disease” (copper storage disease). Interesting to research and learn about. Used to be seen mostly in bedlington terriers and now branches out to about 5 breeds especially labs. So the breeding conversation really hit home for us. Also have a border collie/Pyrenees mix and he is just a different ballgame but we’re trying. Thank you for all you do and I hope you get to have your own enjoyment just to play and train a dog for yourself soon. You need to be energized as well. 😊

I was not a trainer, however I assisted our k9 mwds when I was active duty. It was very interesting to see the different personalities of a lot of the dogs. Some of them you could not go near at all, unless it was the kennel master, or the actual handler. Quite a few dogs were very friendly, however when that light switch was flipped it was all business

Great topics. One overlooked thing I have found that may play in to a given Veterinarian"s anti-raw food stance is the fact that many Veterinary practices are now owned by multi-national Corporations, like Mars, Nestle, and Purina PetCare. Even though it may appear to be a "local" practice it often isn't.The veterinarians work for a corporation that sells a myriad of "pet" products (dog and cat foods, treats, supplements, etc. being main ones), not themselves. I would encourage your audience to investigate how many aspects of veterinary practice these corporations now control. It also includes Pet Insurance, testing Laboratories, etc.

Thank you for a great interview. I live in Sweden and have 2 trailing dogs. One a Flat coated retriever hunting variant. The other one a Belgian Tervueren. Like a Malinois with long fur. We search mainly run away cats or dogs. They get presented a smeller and will follow that scent trail. The longest we have done is 25 km in rough terrain.After that I at least I have to rest a day or two. Than means the dogs have trailed around 4-5 hours constantly using the nose. That is nose work extreme. Of course my dogs only gets raw-food. Here in Sweden we don't have anything called AAP- Dogs are so fantastic. I think that they can help us much more. Like screening people at airports for covid.Reasaerchers found that a dog could detect an infected person 2 days before a technical test should show positive.

In 2006 I proudly opened what turned out to be the first dedicated raw dog food shop in the UK. I started Nurturing by Nature after my boxer Fred had been treated for his second cancerous tumour. I changed him to a raw diet and witnessed an amazing improvement in his overall health - and also the same with all my dogs and cats. He was a very old 9 when he went onto raw and went onto live a very active and happy 5 and a half years. We produce and sell our own raw food. We advocate a complete diet over time - not at every meal. This eve my pup had a 700g whole turkey wing - an amazing full body workout!

I trained my first dog in 1960. This wada pet dog and I was 10 years old. I have been training dogs ever since. Many of this guy's stories sound as if they came right out of my autobiography written in 2007. I worked with msny of the people Frank mentions in this interview. I trained with Bill Koehler in southern California when I was in high school. I attrnded a few seminars with Capt Art Haggarty and several other great trainers. When I returned from Vietnam in 1970 I started my own dog training school while attending college. I officially retired in 2015 but am still active in training Search & Rescue dogs, service dogs and therapy and pet dogs. This interview sounded much like my story to both me and one of my sons.

On the point of keeping it simple. I just eyeball my cats food. Beef heart as the base for good protein and taurine then add some ground chicken wings for bone, something fatty (usually beef toung lately), and beef liver. Then I add brewers yeast, mussel powder, and sea kelp for important vitamins and minerals. They each get about 1/3 cup a day but its not exact. I just adjust based on observing them. They get mostly single ingredient treats and some good quality wet cat food occasionally. Then I add whatever is on hand or on sale. For example, someone gave me a bag of smelt heads and some whole fish so they had a fishy diet for a while. A varied diet insures they get what they need even if I'm not perfect.

my last many dogs...never had only kibble...they had people food...I ate...plus sometimes I fed them raw meats and veggies to chew....they have lived longer lives...to 20 yrs or closer to that. Each of them very active to the end.

Great podcast! So interesting to listen to. My cat was alot like yours when I switched to raw. One thing that helped was upping his fat intake. Lard with a little catnip makes an easy fatty treat. Or pork belly. Then they have more energy on raw so playing with them more as well as hiding treats or throwing them for your cat to chase down. I use dried fish and liver as my main treats. My cat is still a terror but not nearly as bad as when he wasn't getting enough fat. He was irritable, breaking into converts, stealing food, ect. Now he still is still interested but not so insatiable.

I add a 3/4 TBSP of Food grade Diatomaceous Earth in my dogs raw food daily. Did that with my last dog all his life. Never had a tick, flea or internal parasites.

I LOVED THIS INTERVIEW! This man is fantastic and a wealth of knowledge regarding some taboo topics and things that governing bodies, big pharma, etc. do not want us talking about. Iowa and Wisconsin does not acknowledge titer testing, and I thought there wasn't a single state that does. In regards to the rabies jab, which is law, it doesn't matter if you can prove your dog still has "antibodies" through titer testing from a previous rabies jab. The law still forces pet owners to get the rabies poison shot on schedule. It's so infuriating! Does anybody have any insight or advice on this? I do not want to keep jabbing my dog with this garbage but I don't know how to get around it.

I think the only way to "get around" rabies vaccines is to just refuse them and live somewhere you don't have to register the dog or just don't and hope no one finds out. That is risky though. I think it's legally tricky with rabies because it's so dangerous. Prevalence of rabies is different depending on where you live, so risk varies, but rabies is a death sentence. You risk your own dogs life and the lives of animals and people they come into contact with. Even if your dog doesn't show signs of rabies, if they bite someone and are unvaccinated, in many places that person can legally have your dog put down to test for it. And if your dog does contract rabies, you risk infection to anyone they may have bit/scratched/licked, even before they show signs. Once symptoms appear it is almost 100% fatal. Only 29 people have ever survived. Whether or not someone should legally be able to take on a risk that impacts more than just them is a tricky issue.

I have owned my working line female GS now for almostb 2&1/2 years. I am her 4th owner.😢❤ She will be 5 in November. She has cone a long way. She can be a handful at times, lately. She was very much calmed down and enjoying our daily walks. I worked hard with her on a long line over the past 18 months. She heels when asked. Knows commands: sit, platz, stay, come, wait, ok- let's go, leave it, listen, ah-ah! Does not get on furniture or my bed without invitation. Kennel trained, stops to have feet wiped, she's a gem! We prefer loose leash walking. She's a lover, wants to please me at home and in our yard. Even has stopped fence fighting reactivity with neighbors ankle biters and passing dogs on walks. But lately in the car, she is getting more reactive toward dogs, and oncoming vehicles. Barks ferociously! It waxes and wanes, and is confusing to me at times. She rarely at all barks in the house. She didn't bark at cars until she went on her med -- the result of a bite incident with another dog. Vet said she has anxiety, or fear reactivity, and recommended Prozac. She's been on it about 2 years now. . I have worked diligently daily training her. She gets 2-3 walks daily, we go to the park to explore and tun on her 30 long line. When she sees another dog, it gives her an outlet and she runs circles around joyfully! Worked hard to develop our relationship. It seems like she is feeling less effect from her med last couple of months. I am guilty of indulging her drive in evenings letting her stalk & spook rabbits in an empty lot nearby at dusk on her ling line. She is very good about not hitting the end of the line with her prong. I coach her to slow down and she listens. Is this a mistake? She seems to love it! She's a couch potato in the house, but a hyperalert working line high prey drive dog outside, moreso than past 24 months. The only change is that we have had some recent incidents at the park with loose dogs running up to us. I get in front of her and yell at the dogs to leave and call thdir owners to get their dogs. She muzzle punched a male boxer that was not backing off after my attempts to keep him away. She didn't bite him. Whew! Another time a group of three border collies( they are loose, often charging around at people while their owner turns a blind eye--I've reported him to park securitu) came up from behind and my dog pulled me over to stop their approach. Ag as in, she did not bite ir " fight" but instead did a blocking move or body slam. They gnashed teeth is all and I reeled her in and yelled at the dogs. This has made her a but more restless I think. Any ideas on her behavior? I don't appreciate people not caring how their loose dogs impact others. That's a whole other podcast topic. Why the change in behavior? Maybe it's her new found confidence, but I still want her to be mannerly. She sometimes is " looking" for certain dogs on our routes niw to get her bluff in with an assertive growl/lunge. Thank you, Tom.

YIKES Prozac? My son's dog has also been put on Prozac. I can't say why but every hair on my body raised up when I heard this. His dog goes into a panic and shakes when she hears the beep sound of an oven or microwave. She does the same if we light candles. Take her on a walk and she's nervous and will refuse to continue unless we turn around and head for home.

I’ve been going with a giant bag of large breed (puppy) kibble the breeder recommended, supplementing with some Eel River 93% lean organic ground beef, cooked..I’ve been so overwhelmed by the new puppy lifestyle and his training that I feel like I haven’t even had time to research properly the whole diet issue..@@amusedBYfools

Great video, thank you. Human’s stomach pH is approximately 1.5, which is actually more acidic than the pH of a dog’s stomach. Many members of the carnivore community are leaning towards the raw facet of the diet. It is also believed that we (humans), are designed to eat carrion, which I eat once in a while. My son and I just got our first dog, and we are feeding him meat, I’ve been leaning towards raw after switching him from high grade kibble to beef, chicken, and other carnivore foods (some cheese, eggs, liver occasionally, etc). Thank you for a great video and a really logical and sensible approach to nutrition. Note: when I switched to the carnivore way of eating, five years ago, I’ve felt better, lost weight, shinier coat, and everything else that one sees in dogs happened to me. That’s what prompted me to feed our dog meat

so Frank is spot on with his assessment of the rotties, german bred are elegant (especially the working line) very delberate with their actions, out of the 3 most prevalent euro rottie versions i prefer the german over the roman and serbian, i see the serbian breed more similar to what you describe (and what i see in videos) the american to be, they are mostly bred to look good on the outside and not much care is given about the personality and mental aspect, the roman ones are a bit on the smaller more agile side and if i were a cop or soldier, thats the rottie i'd pick to be my partner, they are more similar to malinois as mental goes and mostly dont have the rottie whimsy like the others. For a pet and personal protection dog i'd go with the german line if i were to choose for me, i have 2 rottie labs (im obsessed with the mix, the older one is part corso as well and she is a roman rottie while the younger one i have she is a german one and you see the little differences even tho they are mixes, the rottie traits are always visible, the whimsy, the growls are the most notable differences) and i wish, oh i so wish that rottie labs would become a recognized breed because these dogs are truly something else, they are the ultimate combo dog and there is nothing they cant do, you need a dog to go duck hunting? say no more, you want to hunt deer and boar with that same dog? impossible you say??? yeah right.... you wounded an animal and have to wait for the guy with the bloodhound to arrive for hours? no way, we got this, 10 minutes and the job is done.... but what do i hear you say, these dogs surely cannot be good guard dogs? oh au contraire my friend, au contraire, they have an innate sense to warn bark in a way you know its a warning, they are great just as a detterrent visually. But but, a dog that can do all of this, surely it has too much drive and energy to be considered a good family dog and pet. Yeah maybe, if you cannot get the dog to use up his energy, you are in for a mess but if you can, they are excellent family dogs, they very much differentiate between man and women, children adults and elderly, and innately know how to act around all kinds of people, i once made an experiment and got an 85 year old woman, a 75 year old woman a 60 year old man, a couple of around 50 years old neighbours and their kids, 8, 12 and 14 to take my dogs for a walk, 0 problems with each and everyone of them, people could not believe how fast she understood that walking near a 85 year old lady with a walker is a different than a 50 year old man or a 12 year old girl and she acted differently with each of them, she protected the elderly and children but with the ones in between she acted like she does with me for example where she knows she doesnt need to work unless told to. Not to mention how well they understand human feelings and their empathy is crazy, the older dog is a registered working dog (even tho i dont really need the registration it was more about getting official proof that i can train a dog to this level too) and she learned most of what i needed from her on her own, she knew exactly when she was needed and eventually got so good at her job she would anticipate a panic attack and acted preemptively to the point im now almost 2 years without even 1 attack from initially having 4-5 attacks per week, and believe me im not anywhere near done with what they can do at a high level but this post is long enough. They are simply amazing dogs and i love them so much

I feed the same way. My dog doesn't like raw, I think it's a texture thing. I'm going to say "yes" because the food you cook your dog is still going to digest faster than the kibble. On my dogs kibble, I make a gravy out of canned dog food, moistening the kibble. (Kibble can dehydrate dogs bc it draws water out of the dog to digest) I've actually just been seeing that our guy gets gassy when he has too much of kibble with his cooked meals. So I was just trying to solve this issue. Hearing this today made perfect sense to me. ❤ Seperate meals from now on.

​@@t.dunning1876I mix raw as well kibble but not at the same time, I just use kibble as filler on some days. The key is just not mixing them.. Either kibble one day and raw the next but never same day. Since you're not actually feeding raw I am not sure, I wouldn't ever feed cooked meat that just destroys tons of important nutrients. If he is picky just work him hard then offer food, if it takes it great if not take it away and repeat the next day if worked hard I doubt it will be picky.

I have a very well trained 2 year old male Malinois on a raw food diet. It may be a bit more expensive than kibble but definitely worth the cost. BTW, I could listen to this conversaton all day. Thinking of getting a rescue Malinois...am I better off getting a female cuz 2 males would fight?

I find all my raw at an Asian supermarket. Gizzards, tripe, tongue, hearts, livers, bones. Chicken, Turkey, beef and fish. So I suggest looking at ethnic grocery stores. Good luck.

Saw recent video of traffic stop for a truck flap problem, driver finally 🛑 got out, got down on the ground, 🙌 State cop tells local cop, “Do Not release the dog,” more than once on bull horn, (dog was chomping at the bit) but release he did! Even dog was so confused he ran to State Cop, like what do I do cause even he knew the guy was in surrender! Local👮‍♂️yells again to attack the fully surrendered guy & attack he did, it was bad. State guy asked another if he was clear enough with his command & he agreed he was clear as a 🔔 Local 👮‍♂️ dog handler was fired. Ego seems a huge problem, when even your dog questions your commands.

Maybe he should have taken his family along on his journey. 😢 There was professional training material around for the public in Germany and Austria already in the 60's. They had special suits and protection stuff for dog training units already with police and military in the 30's in Germany. It's hard to believe that they didn't have these in the USA in the 80's.

I have two working line GSD and one lab mix we got from a shelter. The GSDs are stubborn, hardheaded and are a LOT of work for sure! The lab, OMG the best way to describe her is a tasmanian devil on speed 😂😂 I'm at a loss on how to train this girl. Sweet as can be but she's bipolar, psycho and is worse than the Energizer bunny on steroids. 🤣. Out of the three though, she is the best bet for a pet. Very loving and affectionate. Will lick your face off or anyone else's if given a chance. She is ok with anyone or anything coming up to her. My GSDs, not so much lol. I'm working on that Tom. Especially the male. He is mine, the female, who is more bidable, belongs to one daughter while the lab belongs to the other daughter. If you can't tell, we LOVE animals here! Lol. I'm just getting frazzled trying to work on all three. My daughters are 16 ((twins) and have no experience, so I'm trying to teach them AND their dogs, plus work with my hard headed little butthead lol. Oh geez, I'm sorry. I just rambled on. Oops.

Y'all have so much experience; means of communication just can't provide a proper outlet.... I've watched this episode like 10 times. Every time I watch it I pick up something new. You could break all this down and make a whole series out of it. I've started cooking rice and feeding raw. It was the missing link to calming my working lines down.....there is a brief moment where pitching a chain into the dog is mentioned. I'm able to get my 120 lb European doberman to place now😂. Just by rattling it in my pocket. I have not had to even hit him with it just toss it about a yard from his feet. It is the sound of the metal that overrides their senses... I'd give almost anything to know what y'all do about dogs. Probably won't plug up a hotdog 🔌🌭😮 but it's justified; better than getting poisoned
