The best watch advice I ever received - Never wear anything you cant afford to replace. Once I did that i was able to start wearing my watches with more confidence, less concerned about the price and more with the style and look it that made me feel the happiest. I stated enjoying watches vs feeling stressed about them.

I don't feel stressed about my Tissot Seastar 2000 Professional because the thing has the specs of a Planet Ocean. It can withstand the constant pressure of being 2,000' below the surface of the ocean indefinitely. If I manage to damage it, I'll be proud because this thing is nigh indestructible.

I've noticed "better responses" when I pair the opposite spectrums together. ALS, JLC or a rolex when I'm dressed down and taking public transportation. (Where I live I won't get robbed for doing so). My beloved Casio F91W when I'm in my crisp outfit and driving my SL. It's a way to achieve (a sense of) sprezzatura. Very accurate video. I wear watches on a daily basis and I really love the spin it can give an outfit. A dressier watch can make a neutral outfit dressiere, a dive watch can make it more casual and relaxed. There is only one thing you should have added at the last point “a watch shows where you might be in life”. I think everyone should wear whatever watch they like without thinking about the opinion of others. If you do think about the opinion of other people, however, you should also keep in mind that there are watches that might not fit your current position in life and therefore seem odd. Like spending a lot of your money on a Rolex, even though you are a college student. People will either think you have rich parents, even thought you earned the money yourself doing side hustles, or that it is fake. Both are not very positive attributes.

Unfortunately, usually women are not able to distinguish between cheap watches and great watches (I’m not speaking about the price) and tend to compliment and judge two different categories: fashion watches (Calvin Klein, Maserati, Daniel Wellington, ...) and luxury ones. Rolex is seen as the Ferrari of watch industry. In a sense is like this but... You can’t fake a Ferrari. But you can buy a replica or homage. On the other side, men are not able to distinguish between different shades of lipsticks, but that’s another story... 😁

I think seiko made a watch that you can flip open the glass and feel the hands, but I doubt these are made anymore. For a blind person, a watch can be worn as jewelry. I like the way a watch feels on the wrist, and the way the different textures of materials feel when touched. A watch with a mechanical movement makes a great sound when running, and when you wind it. Oh, and, if you want a "minute repeater" you can hear the watch chime the time time of day! Those cost tens of thousands of dollars though.

I agree to most of it. But there are quite some upper to high end watch brands that are not that common, and only enthusiasts might know. Rolex, Breitling, Patek Philippe are famous. But Nomos, Zenith, Tudor, Lange&Soehne? I know you like IWC. Me too, but it is an underrated brand, many people will not know you wear high end.

@@Tea-Pain Experimental scientist here, I can write all day about this. Headset and watch are way two different things. No flight is long enough so the accuracy of a contemporaneous watch is important, meanwhile the low density markings of analog watches makes them less precise than the digital ones, finally the $10 dollar Casio has dual time (so, Zulu and local time). So, you are not flying better because your watch, though you look cooler. I only use my fancy watch in the cockpit when I take a girl to fly.

Funnily enough, my most 'bling'-looking watch is my cheapest : a Casio MDV017. I keep it pristine and on a nice leather strap which keeps women looking at it with want. Whenever one of them compliments me I laugh and admit that it's the cheapest, but most women then admit to still liking it anyway. Also, mentioning some facts about the watch that non-watch people don't know, also gives the idea that I'm in a grown man phase, which I'm really not all that much. At least not as in chasing money.

When I became a watch guy, I found out I have good tastes in watches, because of the insane number of compliments. Even my work watch, restoration hard labor, is a Tag Heuer AquaRacer Calibre 5. If I'm being honest, replying to the g-shock jocks, G-shocks look like toys to me(no offense intended, as I read that G-shocks are the only good watches made, from some people in comments. Which is BS. Overpriced and worn by wannabes 9/10 times). I don't play with stuff covered in plastic, so maybe I am missing out(doubtful). My vintage Omegas catch a lot of enthusiast attention. My Movados catch women's attention. Quality looking watches are extremely important, and stainless is probably 9/10 the only way to go. Titanium is nice, but is weaker(scratches very easily) and plated watches are normally crap(with rolled good vintage pieces an exception - rule: electroplated watches look cheap to anyone who knows watches - not to mention the green wrist ring effect after a week for hard working people. Haha). Then interesting pieces will catch the attention of women and enthusiasts(RADO Diastar for example) alike. Seiko Presage is the best bang-4-buck dress watch, and will draw the attention of women as well. A cultured man will know what watches are appropriate for where and when. Hiking? G-Shock fine. Diving? Serious 200-300M wrist beef is fine. Out to dinner at a nice restaurant? Shocks and Divers look ridiculous. Sports watches only look correct for sports (surprise. Haha). Some do dress up a bit on leather though. Lastly, while certain parameters count for enthusiasts(and that is people who don't have a narrow preference - such as those saying they don't care what others think - as that means they know they need to widen their horizons of what to wear, and when. Laziness is a factor in not wanting to diversify a watch collection too. I personally like

I always wear a watch on one wrist, and a fitbit bracelet on the other (No face). Simple, simple simple. I have five or six Fossils, because they have a nice look and are inexpensive. My Raymond Weil is a specialty watch, for the weight shape and color. Very limited use. My biggest mistake was my Tag Heuer. I bought the smart watch because I was thinking more versatile. It's fun to change the face, hands, bezel, marker, even the band if you want to spend that money. However, not one time has anyone ever even recognized it. If there was any reaction, and for the most part it was an off-hand comment, was that I had a nice smart watch.

There's a lot to unpack here but generally you can "judge" a person by their accessories, and that's my takeaway here. Some random examples. My every day watch is a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 (what a mouthful!) - it's my favorite thing in my collection, but it isn't something that most enthusiasts might like - for one thing it's a skeleton watch. Reason I got it? I wanted a silver cased Chrono watch but don't like the design of other watches in the price range. I think I can get an entry level Rolex if I saved up a little more, but dislike pretty much ALL of their designs. I realize how amazing the watches are - I just dislike their designs. So my watch is simultaneously a useful watch (I wanted a chrono) and a statement on my tastes. My friend at the office, who makes more than me, wears a DW fashion watch. Normally, nobody would notice, but I notice these things now. He *could* afford something better, but there must be a reason he wears that watch. My old manager wears Rolexes. He must have a few watches because the reason I realized he had one was that he was walking around with a phone that wasn't wound. He had to wind it in front of me and I got a glance at it during that time. At the office, I don't wear my Tag Heuer. I just wear a Junkers Bauhaus. I'll wear the TH if I ever went to work in business casual but that's it. The Junkers watch is perfectly fine and matches my work clothes. The TH would *not* and would stand out like a sore thumb. Whenever I dress up, I'll wear a dress watch. Do women notice? You bet you sweet cat they do. I will see my good friend once in a while, maybe twice a year, and his wife notices my watch immediately. I was wearing this gold citizen eco drive watch and she noticed. When she saw my Tag Heuer, she *definitely* noticed, calling it one of those watches a person like George Clooney would wear. Now I don't think GC would wear a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 but it was the thought that counts. That particular incident really cemented this idea that women notice what you wear

SinHurr I wanted to point out that a higher end watch will usually have a bracelet that your arm hairs won’t get caught in. It’s part of what you get when you buy a nice watch.

As a school teacher with seven 45-minute classes and only 5 minutes between each class, I like to know EXACTLY how much time I have before the next bell rings. My Apple Watch does that automatically for me since both the school clock and my Apple Watch use GPS to keep time. I used to have a small collection of watches, but even the ones with quartz movement would lose/gain a few seconds in a week, and my one nice watch with automatic movement was losing even more than that. Today I only own one watch -- my Apple Watch 5. I've worn it every single day for the last three years. I feel like my style/fashion game has taken a hit, but whaddayagunnado?

Is "where you're at" a deal breaker? Without getting into the deep weeds here, look at the marriage rate, birth rate, and the societal research into the reasons that they are dropping, and you cannot walk away believing that where a man is at is not incredibly important to almost all women. Almost the only ones to whom it does not are those who are getting married within a very few years of college graduation.
