In this video, we explore the reason why a negative number multiplied by another negative number always equals to a positive value. We use the concept of money $$$ (Earnings and debt) to bring it to life. Enjoy!

Im 39 years old and I would avoid using calculations of two negatives because I couldn't understand how to make it work in the real world. After watching this video it makes exact sense as to when to use this type of equation. I went down this rabbit hole because I was learning algebra again and I saw a question that had -1^2 and I assumed the answer was -1 and so I ended up here after a few hours of pondering why two negatives = a positive. Awesome video and I wish they taught this way in shcools tbh.

I have a question. We always calculated the -x-=+ in this video as taking away debt but what does it mean for someone who doesn't have debt and only has money. Because sometimes in math there are additions like +4-(-2). In this case for someone who doesn't have debt in the first place and only has money how does -(-2) or -(-a) work here and how does he get richer which means positive? Can you kindly explain?

I'm an English teacher in Japan, and have had my students try to explain these equations, and I have to say that this is the best explanation of neg. X neg. = pos. that I have come across. I still have a couple issues with it because I just see it as somehow ultimately reduced to zero. But then again, my friends call me the ultimate reductionist. haha. Anyway, you are an excellent teacher and your students are very lucky.

The best it could be is 0. In his last example - 2 x -3 = + 6 he then reveals the 6 that was in the bank, if you are just seeing the expression ( what he shows is not an equation) how do you know what was in the bank. I want to see it on a number line.
@ramymelhem3 жыл бұрын
@@simpleman283 -2 x -3 = 6 is an Equation and not an expression. I'm not sure that I understand your main question, but it sounds like you are doubting how there could be $6 in his bank account at the end. Consider it like this, if you started with $6 in your account, then racked up $6 credit card debt, then your bank account is worth zero. If your dad said he will pay off your cc bill then you are back to $6 again.
@simpleman2833 жыл бұрын
@@ramymelhem -2 x -3 = 6 is an equation, agreed. I was talking about - 2 x -3. To me it is just a rule we follow to all stay on the same page, like PEMDAS. They could have made the rule from left to right no matter the operation. Anyone can see -3 + -3 + -3 + -3 + -3 = -3 x 5 = -15 or -5 + -5 + -5 = -5 x 3 = -15. In your explanation you told us to ignore the $6 that was in the bank and look at the expression -2 x -3 then pull it down after we got to 0. In order to evaluate an expression we need all the information, there could have been $6 in the bank or $7. To me subtracting groups is not multiplication. If that is truly subtracting groups then we need a new math symbol such as (G). -(2)G(-3). I know you put a lot of thought and effort into your presentation and I am not trying beat you up in any way but it still is not very clear.
@ramymelhem3 жыл бұрын
@@simpleman283 I'm honestly not sure if you are trolling with your arguments but I will assume that you mean well. First off, I didn't invent this explanation. I am re-explaining it the way the founder of this entire methodology explained it in his book 1500 years ago. Now allow me to attempt to counter argue your statements. 1. -3 + -3 +-3 + -3 + -3 is not -3 x 5 but rather 5 x -3. It won't impact the answer, but it does make a difference in terms of understanding the literal meaning of the expression. We have 5 groups of -3 in 5 x -3. 2. I suggested to ignore the red tiles (+2 x +3) to draw attention to the blue tiles which represented the credit card statement so that we could derive an expression for it. 3. It's absolutely and utterly irrelevant as to whether we started with $6, $7, or $82.32 in the bank account. What matters is that removing a debt increases your net-worth. That is basic financial literacy. 4. It's not up to you or me to decide whether or not "removing groups" is or isn't considered to be multiplication. Multiplication in its essence refers to deriving "repetitive groups" of any asset, debt, abstract, or non-abstract entity. X=groups plain and simple. You can either 'add' groups or you can 'remove' groups and both would be considered 'multiplication'. There is no need to over-complicate it. Why would you need to start a new math symbol 'G' to represent what an 'x' already does perfectly. How would that change Anything? I feel like the gap in your understanding arises entirely from a mathematical literacy perspective. You understand the difference between an Equation and an expression perfectly fine, but you aren't totally clear as to how multiplication expressions and symbols truly function.... and then you aren't completely sure as to what the positive and negative symbols in front of each number represents. I go through that in the first 3-min of the video. And all that is totally ok because we are all here to learn. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to help. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you Ramy for the time and efforts you put on making the video. I have a question however... What if you start from the point where there is no money in your account and then you come up with the equation - 2 * - 3= 6. How would you explain this 6 since you don't have any debts previously? Thank you one more time buddy!
@ramymelhem3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. I just noticed your comment. You do not need to have any debts. The answer you get when multiplying integers only tells us whether your net worth has increased or if it has decreased. So a positive answer would mean that ur net worth has gone up, whereas a negative answer tells us that it has gone down. The issue of you being in debt or in surplus is irrelevant. Does that make sense?

Your explanation is awesome. Please explain why negative number divided by negative number is positive.

Thank you thank you thank you! Like so many mathematical transactions the answer is so obvious once you know it. And you're right, there are so many videos that show you the formula (the what) but not the explanation behind it (the how or why.) So thank you for this.

Thanks very much. 🙏 Though, this isn't meant for students except for perhaps the most highest of achievers.
