Why A Niche In Private Practice Is Good
Finding a niche in private practice can be a difficult process but I'm going to ease the difficulty in this video. The first step to understanding why niching in private practice is a good idea, is to know why you need to niche in the first place. Let's dive in as I break this down!

I'm in downtown Chicago and I think I'm mildly to moderately niched (Issues: EDs; Maladaptive-perfectionism/disorders of over control; OCD; CPTSD; PDs. Modalities: ERP, ACT, DBT/RO-DBT, Component Based Psychotherapy (a trauma modality) but I am bursting at the seams! I agree location is a major factor that intersects with your Niche, even with just a seemingly small move. I moved practice location from a suburb about 45min from Chicago to literally in the heart of the city about 8mo ago and have been busier than I've ever been and I don't even have to work past 5 or 6pm anymore! I was always pretty full before, but if I didn't have late evening hours it was tough and 3pm or earlier ties might sit for 2-3 weeks before they were filled (now even a 10a or 2pm time will be filled in less than a day). Nothing else about my niche or marketing changed, but clearly something about me/my niche ect resonates/fits the demographics in the urban core better than the burbs! love your content, it has been super helpful over the years, particularly hen I was first moving from being a staff therapist in RTC and a Hospital to private practice full-time!

Nice work!! I think anytime you move your practice to an area where more people work AND live, you are now fishing in a bigger pond and may find the growth you’re after. And it’s all about continuing to experiment! Thank you for following along 🙏🏻

I'm in the beginning stages of building my 100% remote, cash-pay only practice. I'm working on my niche. I have extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy (psychoanalysis is my passion!). I'm also Buddhist and have had a meditation practice for the last 20 years. I'm really trying to find that magic blend of who I am as a person (my history, my journey), the patients that excite me and my skills/training. I think I'd like my niche to be: individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults who are Buddhist/mindfulness practitioners. I'm still trying to clarify my 'pain points.' I don't want to work with folks with psychosis or Bipolar Disorder or active substance use. I feel very comfortable (and have had much success) treating depression, anxiety, dissociation (as a symptom, not structure), but those categories are very broad. I also am comfortable working with folks with a wide range of childhood trauma (also really broad). Something else I want to make sure I highlight is my emphasis on the patient's affective experience (i.e., feelings) and how that relates to recovery from childhood emotional neglect. I also emphasize the body, felt experience and somatic processing of trauma. As you can see, there are still things for me to tease apart and I'd love any feedback on what I've come up with so far!

Hey John! What do you think about niche versus ideal client? For example, my niches are LGBT and Latinx clients, but I find that my ideal clients (in terms of strongest tx alliances) tend to be clients who like process-oriented/psychodynamic work (many whom can fall either inside or outside my niche demographics). I know that these can intersect as you mentioned, but how does one market psychodynamic therapy when it's a modality that's less driven by concrete results and often too jargony?

If I were you, I'd focus on the demographic niche: LGBT and Latinx clients, or just choose one of these as your main target market

I love working with trauma and grief and I really connect with LGBTQ teens and adults, using EMDR therapy and clinical hypnosis. Is this too broad?

I am on hiatus right now but when I return to seeing clients again, I would like to have several niches but am not sure if this is wise choice.

You can do this , but try to narrow it down to 2-3, ideally that have some overlap

My niche is estrangement issues. Anything from custody battles to teenagers missing their deployed fathers to kidnappings and cults. I love addressing the estrangement dynamics common to all of these. Is that too broad? Thoughts?

@@fitnfavored sounds very specific, it may be too narrow actually, but let’s see! Lmk how it is going

Why do you always start your videos with a negative comment "well, is not easy at all.."
