I see the difference. I like it. No need for a 5th wheel in the bed to have to remove whenever you need to use your bed. Good idea.

I bought a 16K Gooseball for our Montana 5th wheel and I love it. Pulls great and so easy to hook up. No hitch to take up space in my truck bed.

looks like a nice pin box setup. I've considered going into this method, but I had a few considerations that changed my mind. I ran across I think one or two states that allow a passenger inside a fifth wheel and specifically not a goose neck while driving down the road. I do not intend to drive with passengers in the trailer but it made me consider what makes the laws different for gooseneck. After looking at several hitches oem aftermarket, I saw that fifth wheel hitches spread the load being attached to the truck frame and most can handle larger angles of tilt. Gooseneck hitches are mounted to a small frame area. It became a serious consideration that when in a accident I'd rather have a fifth wheel connection, if it decreases the chance of the RV coming loose, And into the cab or striking something else. On the flip side A major drawback to a fifth wheel hitch is you can be in a hurry or distracted forget to drop the landing gear. And release the fifthwheel latch pullout and have the trailer crash down

I have this exact setup. I love it. Virtually, no chucking. No 5th wheel hitch in the bed. I really don't feel the trailer moving behind me. If I do feel it, it's slow suttle bounce on bumps. If your truck hits a pot hole, the vibrations don't transmit to the trailer, and vise versa. Love it, love it.

I've been watching for a while but these goosebox videos, along with the Anderson hitch, got me to subscribe. I've only been on a long trip with my 5th wheel, 2004 KZ Sportsman 33, a couple of times. After an 8 or 10 hour day on the road the chucking and bucking really added to my fatigue. Short trips are all I plan anymore. These look worth trying to me. I'd like to go on longer trips in the future, maybe go full time... Thank you so much for reviewing them objectively and making quality videos!

I have had the 20K Goosebox for 3 years on my 40' Carbon Toyhauler and absolutely love it. IMO it is the best hitch on the market when you factor in ride comfort and bed access...there is nothing that compares. Another bonus is you never have to worry if the jaws on a traditional 5er hitch are fully locked...no chance of your 5er falling off and damaging the bed of your truck or RV. The only drawback is it is a little harder to line up, but after time it becomes a non-issue.

I prefer the kingpin over ball because it’s stronger and safer, also use of kingpin is considered full frame connection and your allowance for passengers to ride in trailer during travels is legal. And with a ball you couldn’t do that. I know a slider hitch is heavy and takes up space but it sure is nice to have when getting into tight camping spots, we even used a slider in a long bed truck and there wasn’t a back in spot we couldn’t get into. But a good informative video..👍🏻

Actually, depending on the components, goose balls can be rated higher than 30,000 lbs. while a 30,000 lb. 5th wheel hitch is about the maximum you can get for these diesel pickup trucks.

I purchased the Reese Goose Box based on your video. It arrived today and I put it on. I have a couple of observations based on my installation; although I haven't actually driven it with the Goose Box yet. 1) I don't like where the air inlet/outlet is. I can't reach it from any direction without getting into the bed of the truck. And, I have to duck in order to not hit my head on the coach. It would be better if it was on the back of the Goose Box so it could be easier to reach. 2) On my unit, when filled with air at 50 PSI, the load/air sticker never gets to the green. I added a little extra and the over flow blew telling me that was enough. With 50lbs, the sticker says add more air. 3) As I tried to un hitch my truck, I could not get the release cable to lock into the cradle. I finally figured out that I had to empty the air bags in the Goose Box in order to get the latch to release. So, that means that if I was at a campsite, once I empty the bags to remove the truck they would be empty upon re attaching the Goose Box. So, next week I am installing a Viair system in my F350 so I will always have on-board air. Not a bid deal but something to think about if one is looking to purchase this. With that said, the construction is beautiful and I can't wait to see what the ride is like on our next trip.
@BTBRVReviews
@BTBRVReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Great observations! I experienced the same issue with the airbag. Reese told me that 50lbs is the max pressure, but you really need to pull your coach and see exactly what feels right to you. I settled at 30lbs for me. In regards to unhitching, I also experienced the same issue. I'll have to see if this is a consistent thing or is problematic over time. Finally, in regards to the valve location, I use the Viair extended arm which keeps me from getting in the bed.

Both the gooseneck adapter and the Goosebox would apply the same amount of torque to the frame of the coach if the gooseneck connection points between the two setups are the same distance below the bottom of the coach. Just because the Goosebox is further forward and goes down at an angle does not change the torque applied to the frame. However the shock absorbing functions built into the Goosebox would be a significant improvement to just adding a gooseneck adapter to the pin box.
@JimmysTractor

Agreed, shock absorbers reduce the high G loads when you hit one of those bone jarring bumps.
@TAMBestBuild
@TAMBestBuild 6 жыл бұрын
Bill, you are absolutely correct on this. The angle, shape or configuration of the connecting pieces makes no difference. The torque or moment applied to the frame has only to do with the moment arm (the vertical distance to the ball; which is much greater than a normal 5th wheel hitch). The big advantage here is the dampening you get from the air bag and shocks. I'm buying one. :)

Why not flip the bolts so the nuts are on the outside of the box? You can probably get a wrench on the bolt heads inside the box while you torque from the outside. That's what I did when I replaced my old hardware. My thinking is, if the nuts are visible from the outside, I'll notice any loosening more easily.

The other method you could have used for torquing the bolts would to have used a 6" crows foot wrench and the conversion table for torque. IMO, when you look at the torque requirements for a 5/8-11 grade 8 bolt, plated bolts only require 159 ft.lbs of torque. Non-plated bolts get 212 ft.lbs torque. The bolts supplied by Reese appear to be cadmium plated, so a lower torque number could be safely applied. Having said that, if Reese recommends 225 ft.lbs of torque, that's what I would apply.

I switched and put a fifth wheel in the truck and the chucking seems to be a lot less noticeable. I am curious to see if you experience any difference going down the road with this system compared to the fifth wheel hitch. I would love to go back to just having a gooseball to take out of the truck every weekend instead of hossing the fifth wheel around.

You still have the same lever arm from the ball to the pin box. It doesn’t matter what pieces are in the middle. I understand the desire to get rid of the hitch in the bed but this isn’t any different from the other adapters.
@BTBRVReviews
@BTBRVReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Richard M: Not true. A gooseneck adapter coming down from the Pinbox acts as a lever. The ratio applied to the outer force transfers that energy to the upper supporting structure with greater inner force causing the lever (gooseneck adapter) to create an increased mechanical force against the frame.
@kentbridges5060

Richard M IS correct. Basic mechanics when figuring torque it makes no difference what is in between, just end points and pivot points.

Richard M is absolutely correct, the length of the lever determines the amount of force applied. Doesn't matter if you have a kingpin or gooseneck ball. I do like the way it's made, looks good.
@tjsbbi
@tjsbbi 6 жыл бұрын
Richard M is correct. The torque applied to the frame is only a function of the linear distance between the ball mount and the frame. The path taken between those points won't change the torque or load. It can however. introduce some "springiness" depending on the geometry and material used.

I hear & understand what your are saying but if the trucking industry has never used gooseneck type hitch connections I don’t feel it is in my best interests. In case of any accident the traditional 5th wheel pin hitch is much more secure in any swerving maneuvers IMHO. Feel free to do it your way but on this topic I think the goose neck can’t hold a candle to a traditional setup.

Couple questions. 1) regarding long 8 ft box use and use of a 6 ft short box with a system like this. I have seen a lot of guys really mess up their bed and tailgates in towing situations. I have always been told that a short bed doesn't provide enough clearance between the trailer being towed and your cab. What is the real answer? 2) in looking at towing specs for new Ram trucks, the max towing weights available are always caveated with a comment "In a fifth wheel" configuration. Does the same run true for Goose neck towing? Can I get the same 30,000 tow rating with a goose neck that I can get with a 5th wheel? Luckily my trailer, although designed as a goose neck, can be converted to 5th wheel fairly easily by swapping out the pin section, but I NEED that 30,000 lb rating to be legal pulling my excavator and dozer with my pickup. (Trailer rated 30,000 gvwr, and weight roughly 8000lbs.) The excavator weighs just under 20,000 lbs, and the dozer 21,000. I know some of that weight transfers to the tow vehicle. But like most people, I prefer the goose neck so I still can have some useful bed space.
@BTBRVReviews
@BTBRVReviews 6 жыл бұрын
RAM and FORD both have Gooseneck ratings over 30,000lbs. RAM also rates their Fifth Wheel towing over 30,000lbs where as Ford is limited to 26k because of a hitch mount limitation. In terms of Short vs Long bed, you can run into cab clearance issues if you're not careful. Typically a Gooseneck will give you a wider margin of error because of the narrower front end. You're only going to get max towing capability with RAM if you opt for a Dually, 4.10 geared AISAN truck. Getting that truck in a regular cab or 2wd will increase you max towing. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I use my bed all the time for my roofing company. Plus it's my personal vehicle. So a little ball is no big deal.

Do you know the weight difference of this and the pin box you took off?
@BTBRVReviews
@BTBRVReviews 6 жыл бұрын
the goosebox is about 100lbs more, however, you remove about 150lbs from the truck bed, so it evens out.

So I guess the search for a new 5th wheel is over??? I’ve towed gooseneck and still prefer the 5th wheel ride. Plus now with the blue ox super ride it’s crazy smooth.

not exactly. I'm going to pay down this one for another year and then transfer the hitch over.

Thanks for sharing, ive got one question to ask is the distance from the ball connection the same or greater from the pin box.I didnt know if the rear bumper is closer to the fifth wheel.If its the same im going to change mine out for that and get ride of my B&W companion slider hitch. It looks like E trailer has the best price on them.

The distance is the same, maybe a hair closer to the truck because I had my B&W set to the back slightly (the upright arms).

I like the way he said why he installed the goose box on our 5th wheel instead of saying my 5th wheel like so many arrogant men!!

Do you think this would work on a short box pickup? I currently have the andersen hitch and I do get annoyed by the space it takes.
