Tossed around the ideas of what to put in the 1958 Fairlane only to find the answer was hiding in plain sight. It's going back the way it was with this "312" (stroked & bored 272) Y Block I pulled from a 1955 F500. After doing that video earlier on shifting a 3 on the tree, it got me yearning for a true blast from the past instead of the BORING automatic everyone else puts in this things.
So there it is. A little update and walk around of where I'll be going with this.
Hope you enjoy.

Quick Update on this, That Harmonic Balancer is now offered through Mac's Auto for a whole lot cheaper. Also, I decided to try and save this "core block". Check out my other videos as I fumble through these old relics of a simpler time.

@@MrValhem265 Well hello there thanks for stopping by. The Infamous "F" Code Fords that got banned from NASCAR for Life back in 1957.... man I've looked for one of those my whole life......lololol FoMoCo didn't know what to do with them after that, and they were still playing by the Rules of Racing so you could find them in the "F" Coded cars from 56-61. Pete & Minnie are two of the BEST people you could ever meet..... for sure!

Either way these engines did the job that was expected of them. A Y Block can be modded to great performance gains. Ford all day!

As this progressed, I learned a WHOLE lot more about them and really wish I had the time needed to go all the way with these for the Fairlane Build. But I have to have the car done, ready & driven 1,604 miles to Sikeston MO by Sept 30th this year..... so I opted to put the 460/C6 combo in it and shelve these Y Blocks for future builds. Possibly that 1950 F4 or that 1950 Shoebox, I'm not quite sure now..... but they will live again. Thanks for swinging by man!

Heard that one too. Since shooting this I've stuffed it into that old box-truck storage shed, pulled the plugs and filled it with ATF (and down the intake as well). Saved a few of them that way. Not sure how deep I want to go into that one, but will do my best to at least save the left overs for the next guy. Thanks for the comment & I threw you a Sub as well.

I had a '64 Ford Pickup with the 292 Y block. It was a great engine!

Did a whole lot more digging on these Y Blocks since that video, and I don't know. I think these Y Blocks were designed for forced induction, but when NASCAR banned it for life in '57 they dropped the end game with them.

I had a friend years ago that said he had a fast Thunderbird 1955 it had a 312 with tripps on it I didn't know how rare that was at the time this was early 80s oh if I remember right it was a 4 speed and he would burn the tires right off on that thing I was surprised it ran that good I think it also had 4:11 gears in it to

Man... I like the look of a tunnel ram, but IMO there is nothing cooler than a Tri-Carb & they are actually extremely easy to tune. Those original "litte birds" were so cool. Better looking than the Vette (imo) but they were heavy (all steel 1 peice car, the front fenders didn't bolt on, they were actually part of the car). Then the Gov Crack Down on "street race cars" in '57 and Ford caved tuning it into a "family car" with a back seat. Yep, the Little T-Birds & Super Charged Studebaker Hawks..... by far the best-looking sports cars of the 50's.

Guys should quit bad mouthing YBlock Fords. They were designed in 1950 for car engines in 1953, but because of the Korean War there was a short of the nickle Ford needed. There oiling “problem” was for lack of maintenance and lack of detergent oils of the day. Their head intake design was for equal runners and not performance. They had excellent had excellent torque. In the Heyday of the y-block 55-57 they powered more winners in NASCAR than Chevrolets including the 1956 Convertible championship. The future engine from Ford, the FE big block, dominated the W engine from Chevrolet. Funny the new engines today..the Hallowed LS from GM are Y-BLOCKS.

I like the FE motors , I have a 54c and a 55 , I put FE blocks in both . Direct bolt in

The FE is a good strong motor, and like you said, a pretty easy swap. I see there is a lot of aftermarket support coming back for the old 390's as well, and that's good to see.

Those old Y Blocks are really fun to mess around with, and you can get quite a bit out of them as well. Bad thing about them though..... you have to change the heads to put the 4bbl on them..... I found that out in the later videos in this series. Good to hear you are still rolling around with them!

Thanks for stopping by. I"m doing my best to save that 312, and that 272 (that turned out to be a 239) but as you can see in my newer videos on the car, I was forced to go another route on these engines. I do have plans to build a "speedster" though, and now I'm gathering the parts up to "F code" clone that 312

I had a 56 Ford 1/2 ton pickup with the 272 I think. Does that sound right to you? It did sound good especially after I put straight pipes. Actually pieces off a swing set. 😄 hey I was young and had no money. That truck eventually got a 352 with the FMX Trans.

Could be the 272, or the 239.... the one i'm showing this video I was actually lied to, and it's a 239. I don't think the guy I got it from knew that either though, since he gave me that engine. Oh well... lol. That's the reason I pulled the trigger on going with the 460 in that Fairlane. The Good Old missing swing set Dual Exhaust.... I think we've all done that right! lol
