When Troy Kotsur’s parents found out that he was deaf, they immediately began learning sign language. However, his dad was paralyzed in a car accident years later and they had to find a new way to communicate. Through each new hardship the family faced, Kotsur’s dad never gave up on being the best father he could be.
At the 94th Academy Awards, Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 'CODA.’ He is first deaf man, and second deaf performer after Marlee Matlin, to win an Academy Award.
However, long before this historic accomplishment, Kotsur already had a successful career on stage, particularly in Deaf West Theatre productions. He also has appeared in movies and on TV, including joining George Lucas’ Star Wars universe as a Tusken Raider in Disney’s 'The Mandalorian,' created by Jon Favreau and currently streaming on Disney+.
Kotsur visited Austin, Texas in June to collaborate with Dad Saves America on an upcoming documentary about his story, with a focus on the impact of dads on the flourishing of their children. Kotsur’s visit culminated in a live event at Texas School for the Deaf, during which he taught an acting workshop for students and, later in the evening, gave a speech that drew a packed audience.

Troy’s dad (my Uncle) had an amazing influence on all he came into knowing. The kind of leader we need more of in our world today in my opinion. Uncle Lenny as I knew him was my Dad’s brother. They came from a small coal mining town in NE Pennsylvania. 5 brothers each having a big influence on all of us kids growing up.

I was born 80% deaf, my mom wanted me to be put and institution for the deaf, my dad said no. When I was 6 months old, my dad left me with my maternal grandparents, he didn't want to, but he was afraid of going home and finding me gone. My grandma's brother was also deaf, and she taught him to sound out words and to read lips he had what they call the deaf talk. I was told she did the same for me and when I got my first hearing aids at 3 years old, she taught me how to talk and read lips, up until then I was non-verbal, because I was so young, I don't have the deaf talk, but there are some words I still have a hard time saying, I'm going to be 65 soon, and I thank the good lord for my dad and my grandparents. My uncle and I are the 2 in the family born deaf.
