Retired AF here can attest to AFSOC being difficult to get in. You can "carry a gun" and not be officially SOF. I put in for AFSOC position with my command support but got beat by Rank and just being a bit too young and didnt get the slot. I got beat out by a guy in my shop so I was in the right place at least. I had 2 combat deployments in Combat Comm in 4 years. Again deployed first ones on the ground in JBAd in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 supporting tier 1 assets as a SLICE team (Small Lightweight Initial Comm element). Our team was attached to CSAR directly, but supported all SF elements in the area to include Brits 22SAS, Aussie SAS etc. Package and EPRs was strong (firewall 5s) and a letter of recommendation from the oldest living PJ at the time who came back in to fight and was talking to me about special forces who convinced me to put my package in. I had no idea what that was prior to joining the way I learned about them was by directly supporting them.

The most impressive physical stud of a young man candidate I’ve ever known failed out of the TACP pipeline pretty deep into it, needed to get some sort of surgery afterwards that unfortunately left him with some on-paper neurological damage, and then over a year later after recovery he prepared to go for Ranger and went in to serve alongside his dad, who had been MARSOC and later went over to Ranger. Unless you have a direct “in” with that community where you have guys already in there that want you to make it through, then I would seek life elsewhere.

For people with pre-existing conditions, my advice is to either have a degree and shoot for a high in-demand field, or if enlisted, shoot for a perfect score on your ASVAB and request a high demand field. Also, check wich branch is most lenient for medical waivers. Honesty is best policy. Some recruiters dont know how to put in waivers, so just be respectful and try a different recruiter.

Something else the younger generation can’t comprehend: until the modern era, what we now call Special Operations was considered a sucker’s bet. At least in popular media and even in real life. Watch them old, pre-Chuck Norris war flicks. Except for the movie “The Green Berets”, flicks that showed spec ops type shit showed suicide missions led by social undesirables. Just a bunch of poor, hard knock, criminal minded and/or stupid mofos who only mattered if they came back alive after doing some reckless shit. Now we recognize the importance of that kinda work and offer support and accept the best of the best. But please don’t think the system is set up for the average man. @@NoaNoirlet me ask you about your take on this; I recently made a move on a girl a few years older than me in a couple of my classes. I’m almost 30, she’s probably 32/33. I’ve been single and celibate by choice for over 10 years (but she doesn’t know that) I’m 6’3, blue eyes, full head of hair that I keep short, in very good shape, still a runner and athlete. Was a potential SEAL candidate at two different times in my past, so I’m built pretty well from that and keeping in shape since teenage years. I’m also pretty quiet, but have a deep loud strong raspy voice whenever I do talk, and I have an unwanted PTSD diagnosis from multiple things, including having saved a soldier’s life before while he was threatening to take my own, and who had died for a couple minutes and somehow came back to life right next to me on the drive to the ER (she also doesn’t know that), so my face is a bit chiseled-in-stone, and my mannerisms are similar to a person who has seen some shit, but I’m still friendly with everyone I meet. For me to make a move is a rare occurrence. Have only done it one other time in the past 10 years, also with no success. (She doesn’t know that either) Couldn’t resist this older girl… I made a subtle move first from afar that she knew was me. Then the next couple times I saw her, she would talk to me and make direct eye contact with me with big friendly eyes and a flirty lip-licking smile. The next time I saw her after that I made a more direct move, and surprisingly she rejected me. She said there was no spark… Is she playing hard to get? What do you make of this situation? I’ve been trying to ignore her since her rejection to try to drive her a bit nuts. She’s still been calling me out and openly making lighthearted-fun of me a couple times here and there in class, which still seems like flirty behavior to me. Makes me smile. How do you think I should proceed if I still want to get to know her?

My grandpa was an artillery first sergeant who fought on the front lines in Korea. He believed whole-heartedly that humans have no business being up in the sky. 😅
