Well done, Millie. What a great talk. I gave up drinking last year. It's improved my life no end.

It really is the elephant in the room when it comes to mental health - I’m 5 months sober aswell 🎉
@andymjflemmingАй бұрын
The real elephant in the room is the fact that nobody is talking about the abusive and violent behaviour towards loved ones, by those with problem drinking. All the talks I've seen are by people who never seem to mention this which is the most destructive impact on their loved ones.

Great talk that resonates with me. I struggled with alcohol during COVID and a fight with my best friend changed my life. My rock bottom! I got sober the next day and never looked back. I'm almost 4 years sober and on a similar mission. I published my book, a survival guide for men, on November 1, and I am trying to create an online community to help men connect and talk about mental health.

I’m so grateful I found you on here. I have always been a substance and alcohol abuser. I’m pregnant and if I wasn’t I never truly think the habits would be broken and I’m so scared of slipping back into old habits when my baby is born. I don’t have a single sober friend so I spend every day alone but at 29 when will that change. I’d love to meet sober friends. This gives me hope ❤ Thankyou for speaking on this x

Great Ted talk!! Alcohol really is a horrible substance. The fact that most people who drink say that they can’t go out with their mates on the weekend unless they drink shows how dependent they are on alcohol. I stopped drinking because I was antidepressants and even after coming off antidepressants I knew that alcohol was no longer going to be a regular thing for me ( I have one glass of champagne for Christmas Day as it’s tradition in my family and that’s it all year round ). Alcohol affects your social relationship, social skills, your mental and physical health, your financial wealth, your judgment, your personality, the environment, the list goes on. My parents would drink heavily almost most weekends when I was young and my mum would sometimes drink on a Monday also because she’d still feel a bit anxious from the weekend which was naturally caused by the alcohol leaving her body. Me and my brother would have to stay out till late at the bars especially if they were karaoke bars because my parents wanted to stay out and drink. I feel like we lost a lot of quality time that we could have spent as a family if they decided to not go out drinking especially as id only get to see my dad on the weekends because I would be out with mates during the week and he would be working and in bed by the time I came back home from being out with my friends after school. Another factor was where we lived also. Where I lived was an expat holiday/retirement destinations (in Spain) where a lot of the old folk would move to to retire or to go on vacation and of course when they retire or go on vacation all people want to do is go out drinking and eating with their friends who are also retired or on holiday. So where I lived there wasn’t anything apart from bars and restaurants and the beach so in your free time where would everyone be? Either at the bar drinking or at the beach. It’s an alcoholics paradise especially as the weather is always nice and the alcohol prices in Spain is really cheap. Half the price compared to the UK, sometimes even a third of the price. Just ask yourself this simple question. Could I go out with my mates to a bar or to a party and not drink? And if you answer “ no I can’t” or “ my friends would judge me” or “it wouldn’t be as fun” then you my friend depend on alcohol to socialise and that is a problem. If I’m honest I don’t think anyone should drink alcohol. There is no positive impact that alcohol helps you with. You might say “it makes me feel confident” but the problem is how are you ever going to gain more confidence if you keep relying on alcohol as a social crutch? I don’t even think alcohol should be in moderation because it’s toxic for the body and when you’re going through a tough time in life like everyone does that moderation can easily become more frequent. Think of how healthy as a society we would be if more people gave up drinking. Everyone would be happier, fitter, more confident, more trusting, more caring, etc… if you like the taste of alcohol then buy 0% alcoholic drinks they almost all taste the same as the standard version. The thing I’ve come to realise is that I’ve never met someone who’s became sober and has said “ I miss drinking “ instead they say “ it’s the best thing they’ve done “

This is an incredible talk- I came to one of Millie’s events last year when I knew something about my relationship with alcohol wasn’t where I wanted it to be, but not yet ready to cut it out. I made the decision to stop drinking earlier this year. Millie’s inclusive, honest and positive messaging around stopping drinking has been the bridge from my unhappy and volatile mental state to an energetic, positive and fulfilling mind- with no other changes to my job, circumstances or relationships. The science is so powerfully conclusive and supported by hundreds of anecdotal stories, and I’m so glad I can now add mine!

I’m a retired psychotherapist. I treated some people who told me that they were alcoholic and they asked for my help. I didn’t say I would stop them being alcoholic but we could explore what their lives had brought them to see me. I found that in the cases I treated, the people had been through trauma and had difficulties growing up. When they felt better, they found the no longer needed alcohol to help them deal with their depression and other issues because they were feeling more able to cope with life and could live well without it. I know that some people cannot be helped in this way, but I know that some can.

This was me and I completely agree. I no longer drink but I never consciously went 'cold turkey', instead I addressed my trauma.
