@@jessmorales4841 oh yeah they definitely knew about it which is why Ash was planted on the crew as Chief Science Officer as part of Special Order 937 to make sure they got the creature and protected it from the crew trying to kill it. I remember a scene where Ripley and Dallas are having an argument about Ash’s decisions as Science Officer including breaching quarantine laws and insisting it be studied, and Dallas mentions how Ash replaced the original science officer they had before their return voyage to Earth with the minerals from the colony they were mining at. So yeah Ash was definitely planted under Special Order 937 and Weyland Yutani (who interestingly enough are never mentioned by name in the film, only as “the company”, but were referred to in the script as Weylan Yutani) definitely knew about the crashed alien spacecraft and knew about the contents and cargo given they had deciphered the warning signal.
@ksepton4 ай бұрын
Also, James Cameron must have assumed this too when making Aliens.. Because, in Aliens, when Ripley is being grilled by the company higher-ups, in the crew "bios" that are being displayed behind her, all of them (with the exception of Ash) had had run-ins with the company. (Either lawsuits, or bad work histories, etc.) So, Cameron set this idea up for the sequel by suggesting that the other six members were possible "trouble-makers" that the company wouldn't care that they were gone anyway.

How can there be any debate about whether or not Ash knew? Of course Ash knew, he was obviously acting on specific orders that they gave him or programmed him with when they attached him to the mission with two days' warning. The instructions of "crew expendable" were given to Mother before mission departure as well, since the Nostromo got no signals from the Company and was acting purely upon detection of the signal from LV-426

Excellent episode fellas! I also am onboard with the idea that Ash's attack on Ripley with the magazine is weird and clunky because he's having a conflict of his programming. I always thought he had a base programming of protecting the crew and ensuring their safe return home. But that programming shifts once his priorities become about preserving the alien's life form to capture and transport. This conflict causes him to freak out and short circuit. Like he's fighting against his new orders. Anyway, just an idea.

Yes, the scene that was left out (after Dallas is taken), involved using the air-lock and apparently some de-pressurization. The alien was near it, when Parker spotted him while going to fill the other flame unit. He got on an intercom to let them know, when suddenly alarms went off (by Ash). startling the Alien. If you notice then after this, when Ash starts to attack Ripley, she has a bloody nose--from the de-pressurization. This was also included in the novelization.

Alien is one of the all-time greats, it upped the game massively in terms of the science fiction and horror genres coming right off the tail of Star Wars two years prior and heavily influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey over a decade before. It polished B-grade monster horror elements into sublime and cold horror blending grim industrialism with sexually-charged body horror, HR Giger was a huge influence designing the titular creature along with the alien ship and the countless of eggs the crew encounters. Also love the used future aesthetic of the crew’s ship and its mechanics, Star Wars popularised it but Alien perfected it and made the technology and machinery even more used, dirtier and worn down. Sir Ridley Scott of course made a superb classic and it’s interesting that this really opened up the doors with him for his next film Blade Runner which would come out three years later. A superb film!!
