Ken in the movie is the inboddyment of a young man who maybe has a crush on girl, feels rejected or how they say "friended zoned" looks up some "self help" videos. Stumbles upon some Adrew Tate types and goes down the deep dark path. Meanwhile Allan is just built differently.

Bro the kens were treated like dirt, no wonder they tried to overthrow the Barbies, once ken knew what basic human respect was he couldn’t do nothing, though admittedly replacing one repressive regime with another never works out, the base was still honorable

@eduardoflores1503 You nailed it with Ken's character. It's like watching someone go down a rabbit hole, and Allan's just chillin', being himself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

@@DrewZarwell-fj3lo You've touched on a complex issue within the film. The Kens' feelings of being treated poorly and their subsequent actions raise important questions about respect and power dynamics. Allan's approach offers an alternative, but the situation is certainly multifaceted. Thanks for your insightful comment!

I very much feel like an Allen sometimes. While I engage in various hyper-masculine activities like gun collecting/shooting, I also unashamedly love collecting cute, plushy animals and knitting. Yes, I can easily tell you all about the AK/MP5/Thompson, but I also have a whole family of stuffed whales/dolphins/seals/etc..., and I knit sweaters often. Sometimes, one of the greatest lessons I feel younger men can learn is "it's 100% OK to enjoy/embrace hobbies or activities that aren't traditionally masculine".

I love how Allan could also act as a representation of trans and non binary people; he doesn't contribute to the patriarchy, because he's not a Ken, but he also isn’t directly oppressed by it, because he's not a Barbie. He also has to add himself in to a lot of things and statements, multiple times during the movie, something that trans and non binary people like myself have to do a lot

I'm just so happy to see someone analyzing this character. He is by far the most interesting to me. He realizes that his unique status in Barbie land is strange and therefore awkward, but he works with it without any of the building angst of Ken and eventually proves himself insightful and useful. He's a better friend to Barbie than Ken and, if she wanted a romantic match, he's probably a good option, because he he has his own self and life. Then again, he seems disinterested in romantic relationship entirely, just like our central Barbie does, so that give us some interesting questions. Is he gay? Just happy like her in a friend role without lovers? Would he want some other woman than Barbie? Also, he was made to be a fiend to Ken, but that seems notto be working outmost days. He is the best loose end to lead usto a good movie sequel.

I don't understand in-cells. The Barbie movie is one of the most pro-man thing I've seen in a minute, centering, empathizing with, and focusing on Ken for a LOT of screentime. You're right. While I appreciate how they showed just how deeply patriarchy can harm men, I would have loved more Allan time.

Allan deserved better tho. Always being overlooked. No thanks when he helps them, just "SHUT UP, ALLAN!!" Not like he did it to be thanked, but why not just be a decent person instead of rude? I feel like the total dismiss even at the end shows a lack of encouragement for men to be an Allan

Allen reminds me of most of my gay guy friends - like a bff . Not exactly a romantic partner material. 🤷‍♀️. However Allen’s unapologetic authenticity is what truly makes this character stand out and its admirable regardless of identity politics bs.

These depictions are common in Holywood. Women, homosexuals, and jewish people are portrayed as more virtuous, heroic, and superior, but also as victims. Men, especially light haired non-jewish white straight men are often criticised, or portrayed as inferior, or as the bad guy. I wonder if Hollywood was created to shape public opinion with propaganda like this.

So, Allan's the kind of guy you'd take shopping but not to dinner? 😜 But hey, who needs labels when you've got that level of authenticity? Identity politics can take a backseat!

Well said. I thought Allan was an incredibly interesting character, and one who speaks to the central dilemma of the modern man: that true, non-toxic manhood goes unrewarded and unrecognized by most women, but it is still the morally right path to choose because aggression and domination produce only misery. The moment that best captures this is after Allan beats up all the Kens so he and the women can escape, gets back into the car, and instead of acknowledging what he just did, Gloria simply tells him to shut up. His bravery is met with contempt, yet he does not protest. The challenge for self-aware men is that toxic masculinity is greatly rewarded financially by society and sexually by women. This unfortunate truth creates a challenging dilemma for men not to succumb to bitterness on the one side, and aggression on the other. The rewards of true manhood are internal, and one must have the fortitude not to need external validation from women, who, in the real world, will almost always choose the dominant, aggressive male (Ken) over the true man (Alan). It’s a tough moral, behavioral, and emotional needle to thread.

Ahh, so being manly is bad but being placid and bland is good? I get it now.. the writers hate masculine men. With the current president I can see how this film was hyped so much. I can see how if you wanted to take over a country you’d want it to be full of Allan’s.

Hey, you're right that Allan's screen time is limited, and it might seem like I'm reading too much into it. However, even in his brief appearance, Allan's character traits and actions provide insight into a different kind of masculinity. It's an interesting perspective to explore, but I appreciate your skepticism!

Ken is an extreme, but I feel like he was given more crap than deserved. I think Ken's character is just a confused representation of the way masculinity can present itself, and I feel like people like Ken are more rewarded in the actual world. Despite what Allen tries to represent, you still need to have masculinity in order to be properly valued. I disagree with this video but not entirely. Ken is definitely overbearing and unusually extreme, but most of the barbies exude toxic femininity just as much as the Kens. Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you're entitled to everyone's praise either, yet we only see that one sided perspective. Ken was at least interesting and in my opinion, most of the barbies didn't provide that. I love Allen too tho
@fashionistas.
@fashionistas. Жыл бұрын
It's intriguing how you've dissected Ken's character. While Allan represents a refreshing take on masculinity, it's true that the world often rewards the "Ken" archetype more. But isn't that the problem? We've normalized certain behaviors to the point where they're not just accepted but celebrated. As for the Barbies, it's a valid point that toxic behavior isn't gender-exclusive. However, the narrative often leans towards criticizing women for certain behaviors while praising men for the same. It's a double-edged sword, and perhaps it's time we re-evaluate our standards for both genders. Allan might be the hero we love, but Ken's character raises questions we can't ignore.

Masculinity defined by femininity? Allan's character offers a perspective that emphasizes self-awareness and compassion rather than conforming to external expectations. Allan would probably just shrug and be himself. But it's a conversation worth having, and you've just added some spice to it!
