yup, that's how I always saw Iverson. They're both very exciting players, with relentless and amazing effort on the court but their inefficiency, ego and "risky" type of game made them very frustrating to watch sometimes. They're also the type of players that are very difficult to coach and they hinder the development of other players in the team.

The context of AI is fascinating. Super inefficient yet played on a team engineered to fit around him. All the rebounders and defensive specialists he played with mitigated AI's poor rate stats. But stylistically AI was unique and highly influential so in that sense his career is remembered differently than it would be if he wasn't so fly. AI is the biggest paradox the NBA has ever seen. His effort and will during games was unparalleled outside of a few guys like MJ and Bird. But that didn't carry over to AI's off court habits. AI was also insanely durable and led the league in minutes for 7 seasons. But he hurt his team by playing so much that it cratered his efficiency. And then he broke down and was done basically overnight. For a guy who was probably 5'10'' in bare feet, his lack of serious injuries is unprecedented. So he didn't lose his skill because he blew out a knee or something. He just lost a half a step and that took away his ability to beat defenders off the dribble and he had no plan B. He never got better or added to his skill set. Yeah, the whole practice deal is a meme, but if AI had brought the same intensity to the off season he would've shot over 80% FTs and wouldn't have been such a trash long range shooter. Can you imagine how lethal The Answer would've been if he shot 40% from 3? It would've made his drives so much harder to defend. He had the perfect build for a perimeter scorer but his shot selection was like an interior scorer. His defensive tools were unreal and he was a steals machine but his gambling in passing lanes was a big negative. Great one on one defender, terrible team defender. Total paradox.

Facts because Iverson just like Kemba was a Regular Season Choker for over 50% of his Career while Billups and Lowry both elevated their team's to the Playoffs when help was bought to them where as Iverson had Korver and Igludala and Kemba has had Dwight Howard, Tony Parker and Al Jefferson, Julius Randle and R.J Barrett and they still folded if Harden had all of those guys then he would've gotten those 76ers, Knicks and Hornets teams to the Playoffs every single year and would've averaged 30 or more in every single one of those Season's considering he would've been the only scoring threat on those teams he would've turned Steve Clifford into a Hall of Fame coach just with his Mentality, ego and willingness to do everything for his team to win.

Kyrie got the best handles but Kevin Durant is the second best with the crossover after Iverson. KD’s handles & crossover is so smooth & an underrated part of his game. I haven’t seen KD do a single crossover with the Nets, I think he’s not quick enough to do that anymore cause of the Achilles. Yes his team were great supporting cast but there were other factors like his his teammates being way too young with not enough experience or were beyond there prime like Mutombo also this was the time centers still dominated yes he had talent on his teams like Kyle Korver, Andre Iguodala, jr smith, and Melo but this was late in his career sadly didn’t stay with any of those teams with them players. Yes he was inefficient but he was a great all-round players also he influenced the current modern pg and sg in the NBA. Many players like James harden and LBJ are very inefficient it got to the point where Collin sexton which has potential has a efficiency then Harden. In the history of the NBA no other NBA player maybe other then Hakeem Olajuwon has carried a team to the finals and won with no all stars and with above a 45 percent field goal. Even though Hakeem in my list is a top 3 center of all time his teammates were either in the primes or has some sort of experience. Most players y’all have as a legend has either the same problem or concept as AI but each of these legends have big influence and change how players play and maximize their potential.

Maybe for spectator's but not hoopers. I played serious ball and when I watched AI, I put myself in the defender's place and I was thankful I never had to guard a guy that good. And I was a lockdown defender. I know that I'm right because when you listen to guys who ACTUALLY PLAYED AGAINST HIM and not just analyzed his stats, you hear the same thing I was thinking. Kobe, Chancey BIllups, Shaq, Grant Hill, Paul Pierce, and a ton of other dudes know. He was too quick, too good of a scorer, way too athletic, too good of a ball handler, too fast in the open court, played the passing lanes too well, too mentally tough and played too hard. When you play against a guy like that, as a defender, it hurts your offense and can hurt your mindset. People who've never played serious or high level ball don't really know that. It's like how people call John Stockton overrated but if you ask Gary Payton, he was to toughest challenge. The stuff you can't measure makes a huge difference. I've had conversation about this with a few NBA players (not about AI) and they've said the same thing. Basketball is a game of inches and there is a lot that you don't see or realize unless you are playing.

A great system makes great players even better. San Antonio succeeded a lot because they played during the hero ball era. It was actually Dallas in 2011 that got back to free moving offenses of the 80s. Golden State put multiple great players in that kind of system and it was great to watch, but they didn't have real competition. The best thing for the NBA would be to have two teams with great players and great systems. That's what it was in the 80s with Lakers and Celtics, and we really haven't had that since. Jordan was able to bring the NBA to another level, because he was the best player in a great system.

Alot of NBA players can score 25-30 a night if given then green light the shoot whenever every night. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll be efficient, effective, or insanely skilled. The early 2000’s was the a good era for power forwards. The problem with that era was everybody was trying to play hero ball and mimic Michael Jordan. It hurt nba at the time because there was less team ball, and everybody wanted to be by themselves. Tracy mcgrady left his cousin Vince carter. Allen iverson got jerry stackhouse out of the 76ers because he didn’t want to share the spotlight. Kobe Bryant basically got rid everybody on that early 2000’s laker team because he wanted to feel like Michael Jordan in 1988. Later on he found out that’s not what he wanted. Stephon marberry left the Timberwolves because he wanted more money. So the early 2000’s set the nba back as far as team ball. If you think about it, the blame is Michael Jordan.

I’ve always thought/said this. He’s great, “influenced the culture”, really good off-ball moment, fearless, & revolutionized the ball handle but he is arguably the most overrated star in context to how most folks rate him.

Anything more than a conference finals appearance is a run to the finals for a ring. ALL that went down the toilet instantly, and NOTHING was gained from it. All it did was make the Pistons insufferable to watch for the last ten damn years. And they are STILL just as depressing to watch now even after blowing the team up. Can't watch them half the time. But at least now there is SOME hope for the future with the fresh new talent.

High volume is needed on strong defense weak offensive teams. There are several years where Allen's on off numbers were absolutely insane. He had at least 4 seasons where he was in the 90-99th percentile for on and off metrics. Floor raisers are important components and offensive efficiency is also dictated by offensive options his nuggets and 76ers teams were not super offensively talented they needed a high volume production player. Its just strange to talk about how inefficient of a player he was when he had at least 2 seasons in Denver posting like +10 on average thats pretty insane production.

Stats dont always tell the complete story. Ai was the smallest guy by far in that first comparison with love,pierce,tmac and ray. Had iverson been at least 6’4 his percentages would of been better....maybe not much better..but definitely better.

No one ever says Shaq is a better shooter than Kobe even though Shaq’s FG% has been better. Because we understand that taller players can score in the paint with much more efficiency. You might say that doesn’t matter because Iverson and Kobe were both perimeter players, but the difference in height between Shaq and Kobe is the same difference between Kobe and Iverson. So if it’s hard for a perimeter player to score against defenses that are the same size as them, and even harder to go into the paint, then how difficult should it be for a perimeter player to play against defenses larger than him in the perimeter and double his size in the paint? Being smaller doesn’t make you better, but it has to change the way we look at the numbers. It has to. I’m not docking points from Steph Curry’s FG% because it’s lower than Giannis’s. I understand why.

This is why FG% is bad and nobody reputable uses it anymore. Use TS%. Basketball Reference even has adjusted numbers, so you can see how good they were relative to the league that year. Using raw FG% would tell you Steph Curry has only been 4 percent more efficient than the rest of the league for his career.

And no, a players height should not change the way you look at how efficient they are. Basketball is biased toward tall people. You can say "gee, it's incredible a guy under six feet scored all those points," but you can't say "I should credit Iverson with more value than he actually provided because he was short." Mark Price was only listed at 6 feet, and he smokes Iverson in TS%, and is right there with Shaq and Giannis.

@@foarfield You’re trying to do mental gymnastics to justify your awful opinion. It is factually more difficult for a shorter player to score which makes it more impressive when a shorter player dominates, especially in the paint. Mark Price had completely different tendencies and lower volume than Iverson. The same way I value a shorter players ability to score in the paint is the same way I value a taller players ability to score from mid range and 3P. These are facts of life. Get over it.

ineficient is ineficient, heigth matters yes but thats the reason why you have to evolve, if you're small dont force yourself in the paint go shoot but the thing is Iverson wasn't an efficient shooter and also wasn't efficient in the paint either. Look at Curry he is 6'2 but is a batter shooter than any nba player at any height.

Settling for a jump shot was an adjustment made by weak little guys who were too scared to actually put in the work and “skill” required to score organically. Everybody has played 21 with that little kid who gives up, runs to the 3P and chucks up a shot. That isn’t an evolution of the game. I’m happy Curry can shoot but he was significantly limited in his abilities even in his prime, resulting in the acquisition of KD. He now has more strength as he’s dedicated himself to transforming his body, and attacks the paint at a higher frequency. Iverson was not inefficient from three compared to his counterparts. He was more efficient than T-Mac, J Kidd, and some guy they called “Mr. Big Shot”
