Exactly and the result is many players that were less flashy but extremely consistent get lost in the fold because of the cultural prominence of high-volume low efficiency scorers, especially in the Post Jordan/Early 2000s. Just wish some different guys got their respect for once like Alex English, Adrian Dantley, Glen Rice or Chris Mullin. Rarely spoken about, but those guys were awesome.

Alvin Elmore what does being better than have to do with overall career tho? I can def name 10- 15 sgs who had better careers than tmac. Yall have to stop making everything a whos better than who debate. Tmac may be individually more talented than john havlicek, but Hondo had 10xs the career tmac had. Thats all that matter at the end of the day. What was accomplished? Besides the allstar, and the few scoring titles, tmac didnt do much else in his career to be considered top 10.

Who had a better career and who was a better player is two different questions. TMAC is in the top 10 greatest shooting guards of all time. Jordan Kobe Dwade Jerry West Allen Iverson Clyde Drexler George Gervin TMAC I cant think of any other shooting gauds better then him.

Alvin Elmore u literally just repeated the same thing without giving anything to prove it. WHY does he belong on that list? What did he do in his career to be on that list? Hondo beats him in every aspect. So does ray allen, so does earl monroe, even reggie miller was slighty ahead of him. If ur list is solely based on talent then fine, but an all time great list based on career is for players WHO ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING. Tmac is NOT top 10 all time for anything. Ill give u top 11-15 at best.

Other points that can be added (and some overlap with this video) Baron Davis outplayed T-Mac in the 3 Hornet wins of the 2002 1st Round, not just in the clutch. All without his best teammate Jamal Mashburn. Averages in 3 Hornet wins / Magic losses Baron Davis 29.7 ppg - 10.7 rpg - 9.0 apg - 1.8 TOpg 43% FG - 40% 3PT - 76% FT Tracy McGrady 30.7 ppg - 4.7 rpg - 5.0 apg - 3.7 TOpg 46% FG - 38% 3PT - 74% FT In 3 different Playoffs, T-Mac ranked among the top 3 worst 4th/OT FG% shooters when the score was within 5 points (minimum 10 FGA). 2001 Playoffs - 27% FG (4/15) - 3rd worst 2002 Playoffs - 25% FG (3/12) - worst 2008 Playoffs - 20% FG (2/10) - 3rd worst Since shot-by-shot data on BBall-ref is available (2001-present), nobody else has ranked among the top 3 worst shooters in those situations in 3 different Playoffs. T-Mac never lost to an eventual NBA Finalist in the Playoffs as a starter. This means that he was not even losing to the best competition in the Playoffs. The 2000 Magic were 0.500 the year before T-Mac arrived and the 2003 and 2004 Rockets had consecutive winning seasons prior to his arrival on the 2005 team. If any true superstar is given a team that already has a 0.500 or winning record, there's no excuse for failing to win any playoff series during that time. The Magic may have been a mediocre supporting cast, but every other East team was also mediocre when T-Mac made the 2001-2003 Playoffs. The 2002 and 2003 East have the two worst records for a 1-seed in the 16-team format (1984-present) with the 52-30 Nets in 2002 and 50-32 Pistons in 2003. Jason Kidd joined a 26-56 Nets team and immediately took them to consecutive NBA Finals, the only time in history a sub-30 team has immediately gone to consecutive Finals. If Jason Kidd can take Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin (never had 10 PPG or 13 PPG, respectively, in a series without Kidd's passing) to consecutive NBA Finals, there's no excuse for T-Mac to fail to win a single playoff series with Orlando. T-Mac had good help in Houston and still failed to win a series. Yao had 21-8 on 66% in the 2005 1st Round and completely outplayed Dirk with 21-9 on 35%. In 2007 he had 25-10 on 44% FG and 88% FT. In 2009 when T-Mac was hurt and didn't play, the Rockets finally won a series and took the eventual champion Lakers to 7 games in the WCSF, and that was with Yao missing more than half the 2nd round as well. The Rockets were good enough to take the 65-17 champions to 7 games without their TWO best players, completely refuting any excuses about T-Mac not having good enough help.

As a Tracy McGrady fan, this is a tough pill to swallow, but the truth. When you compare the elite guards of the 00’s, particularly Kobe and McGrady, Kobe often came alive in the 4th and OT. How many times can we remember Kobe taking over games in the waning moments, even in Shaq’s absence? Kobe’s competitiveness was unmatched. Tracy had all the talent and abilities, but lacked the relentless will. Tracy was admittedly not a good practice player. I believe if he had the same work habits and mentality of Kobe, we’d be talking about him in a much different light. It would have been a treat to see Kobe and T-Mac matched up in a playoff series. We are only left to think...what if?

Ahh, indeed a tough pill to swallow. TMAC was my favorite player and every year he would get eliminated in the first round I found myself giving him excuses. As I’ve gotten older and gained a better understanding of basketball I can now see he wasn’t a winning player. His basketball IQ isn’t at the caliber of a top tier winner. His shot selection in games , especially late in games was questionable. He didn’t want to play hard defense and while his assist numbers were well above average for his position he didn’t seem to get his teammates involved early enough in games. TMAC is a very weird player because his talent is alpha/1st option level however his mentality just wasn’t. He didn’t handle interviews like an alpha and would always try to blame teammates or opponents. McGrady would have greatly benefitted from a coach like Popovich or a few years in college. I also believe he would have been better suited as the number 2 guy on a championship contender instead of first option as he obviously could not handle the pressure. Much like James Harden.

Jay R AI saw success with his play style however. He literally carried a team into the finals. Injuries also grounded his game, plus the league catches up to you as well. AI's problem wasn't that he choked or screwed up during games, it was that he was undisciplined, and has his body wore down, it caught up to him.

There is going to be a bunch of Stans who are going to just read the title, not watch the video and say "You don't know basketball". But any logical human being with the attention span of a 9 year old, will see this video's composition is 90% made up of Tmac making atrocious shot selection, missing key free throws, not playing defense, and turning the ball over in pivotal moments of games. The Neanderthal stans refer to this a "clutch". Excellent video. Tmac was fun to watch, but extremely overrated, one sided, and not a true deserving HOF'er

You can spot deficiency like that in almost every single superstar in the NBA. Lebron missed clutch freethrows, played no defense in the finals. Kobe had an AWFUL shot selection sometimes and was a ballhog most of the times, etc, etc, etc. Fact is T-Mac was as good as Lebron or Kobe. Carried Orlando with 24 years old (MJ got in the league with 23 so we can have perspective on this). And then Injuries fucked him. BTW Yao Ming was always injured too.

Some people say McGrady was a playoffs failure *exclusively* because of his bad teams. These people always blame his teams but never T-Mac. The only purpose of this video is to show that this is not true. The video shows us that T-Mac had chances to win games (against same-level or even worse teams) but "choked", made horrible decisions. Period. People always put T-Mac as an unlucky man for not advancing in playoffs but he had his chances to shine and didn't. So yeah, people rate him higher than he really was when it comes to playoffs. What does this mean? Overrated. His injuries are not to be discussed here. No one said he was bad. The dude is just saying that McGrady was also responsible for his playoffs failures and that people tend to ignore a player's flaws when they enjoy this specific player. McGrady was good, but just like any other scoring points machine, the kind of player who produces a shit ton of magic moments since they try a lot of times, his flaws are ignored and only his good moments are remembered.

I think pretty much all of the shot chuckers have been overrated. Yes, they were fun to watch when they'd heat up, but they'd shoot their team out of the game as much as they'd shoot their team into the game. Westbrook, McGrady, Iverson, Anthony and quite a few other big name scorers could all fall into that category. I included Iverson in that list because he never seemed like a leader by example, was lazy in practice, and didn't seem to make his teammates better. Compare him to Jordan, or one of the other superstars who had a reputation for going all out in practice, setting that tone, and pushing their teammates to be better, and I feel that while he was a very good ball player, he never was as great as he could have been. I've excluded Kobe Bryant from that list because even though he was a shot chucker, he was very driven and pushed his teammates to be better, much like Jordan did. So his value to his team was a separate metric that outweighed him "shooting all the balls".

Tmac played with heart and only because he got injured and his body gave up on him, at least he showed the years he played in Orlando he was the real deal

There have been other good players before in the NBA that were just as good and not in the Hall of Fame. whats the criteria for the HOF though? Just a good regular season player that doesnt have leadership to carry a team - the HE commentates on who doesnt have killer instincts, clutch and rings? people blame injuries stopped his potential...what about the many other franchise players who didnt due to injuries also? are they hall of famers too? I think popularity got some people into the HOF and he is one of them.

Mr.Calculus/TheUnBiasedDude lol. The magic signed grant hill on a sign and trade and gave away pieces that were apart of that team that won 40 games. Tmac was 21! He carried them into the playoffs and faced a loaded bucks team with Sam cassell, ray Allen, Glenn Robinson 3 all stars and the magic had a rookie Mike miller. Let’s not act that the magic weren’t meant to be swept tf out of that series. T-mac had unbelievable numbers during that playoff run and he was the sole option on offense. I think it’s very harsh to say they didn’t improve when Tmac had no help. Did Kobe even make it out of the first round without shaq and gasol? No. Teams win series not individuals it’s very rare that u see one man teams have success in the playoffs.

This proves a good point amount many NBA players of all-time. To be a great player you have do whatever it takes to win. The grit and grind like MJ, LeBron, and Kobe have. That what makes them stand out from players like T-Mac, Melo, and others. Paul Pierce and Dirk had great grit those years they won the championship and it truly shows how much they want to win.

I'm so glad someone made this video. TMac die-hards are so weird. As passionate as Kobe fans, but without any of the actual reasons to back it up. His game was wonderfully aesthetic, but, aside from like two especially good Magic seasons, he wasn't a particularly special player in terms of production. Sure, he was "cool", but not effective. Can't believe he got into the Hall of Fame. Really weakens the quality of it all for me. And it's a damn shame that he did and someone like Derrick Rose won't despite VERY similar situations. A talented player with a couple of great peak years, and a wonderful aesthetic, yet they never delivered on the promise of that talent due to injuries. Not sure why TMac gets a pass here and Rose won't. At least Rose won an MVP and several playoff series. People keep saying "he didn't get the chance due to injury" or "he never reached his peak development due to injury", which is so stupid to me. It's not the "Hall of what could've been". You get in based on what you actually did in your career. If injuries prevented a supremely talented player from actually accomplishing anything, then that's too bad. Physical durability is a major part of athletics.

Super late to the party, but I just wanna throw my two cents in anyways. Tmac belongs in the HOF for two reasons: First, Tmac was 7x All-NBA, which means that for the better part of a decade, a panel of NBA-affiliated voters whose entire life is dedicated to basketball, voted Tmac as a top player in the league. Second, Tmac led the league in scoring twice. No NBA scoring leader has EVER been left out of the HOF. Mac did it two times. You state DRose won't make the HOF, but insinuate that Rose "deserves" it more than Tmac, because of his playoff wins and MVP. Rose only has 1 All-NBA award, and was only a top-tier player 1 season. Tmac undoubtedly had a better career. Just go to basketball-reference.

2007 Rockets team was abused by Carlos Boozer, love Chuck Hayes but he was still only 6’6 a defender and rebounder. Luis Scola was a monster for Argentina, and a former MvP in his league. The switch from a Mcgrady do everything JVG coaching style, to a more Princeton offense scheme under Adelman was also a main difference. Asking one player to be your entire offense initiator left McGrady gassed at the end of games. He could’ve still pulled it through, but even Lebron and Iverson who were able to pull it off successfully had the same inefficiency and closing struggles.

Some fair points in the video. But trying to debunk the "he didn't have enough help" argument didn't seem that strong to me. Other than arguably the Hornets series where you aptly pointed out Mashburn got hurt, every other team he played on was generally favored to lose. Other than that 2007 series against the Jazz where for the first time in his career, his team was favored to actually win. Of course he was a much lesser version of the player he was in orlando during that series but he indeed should have made it happen. So to me, the case to call tmac overrated should center on that one year. So you compared the 2007 & 2008 Rockets and stated that they advanced without him and thus made the case for "not enough help" as being a thin argument. But honestly, if you analyzed the players on each team you'd notice two really big differences in the lineups: the pg & pf spots. Brooks & Alston are not equal and neither are Scola and Hayes. Brooks was way more capable than Alston offensively, being able to make plays off the dribble with penetration, shoot long 3s from distance from spotups and coming off screens, and playing a very solid pick n roll game. And as much as I loved Hayes' tenacity and defensive mindset, Scola was undeniably greater than Hayes, being able to space the floor from midrange, and having a very proficient post game to boot. Alston could only shoot open 3s and brick floaters, and Hayes as good as he was with finishes around the rim from passes from tmac, was a total offensive liability, letting guys like Boozer sag so far off of him to help on tmac's drives, and further helping the Jazz quarantine him. If tmac had just one of these guys trade places with their counterpart, it would have been enough. I watched every game in that Jazz series, and I'm telling you, the very fact that alston could only occasionally hit the spot up 3 and not create anything offensively, and Boozer being able to sag completely off Hayes and let Okur camp in the paint, really helped deter tmac's effectiveness in trying to score on multiple physical defenders with Kirilenko being the main one (this also happened in the 04-05 Dallas series with Ryan Bowen filling in for Juwan Howard). The times tmac found the open man, he found bricks. And it wore on him and his already worn body. Not to mention that the bench for the Rockets in the latter team was better. Having said all this, I do think that year was the best year for tmac to actually get out of the first round. If he was as healthy as he was in orlando, none of this would be a conversation. it just bothers me that we judge an individual players' holistic value and greatness solely on factors that are somewhat beyond one's control. If Grant Hill never got hurt and played in Orlando, would tmac really have been evaluated as thus worthy of hall-of-fame status and no longer overrated? If Juwan Howard hadn't gotten injured right before the dallas series, would that have mad tmac inherently better? What about the length of the first round going from 5 games to 7 in that Detroit series? The main factor that he should be criticized for is his indirect way of leadership in my opinion. But as far as everything on the court, he's every bit as good as the superstars compared to him, and better than 2-3 of them in my opinion. You take away the one all-star from any one of those other allstars (Allen had cassell & glenn robinson, Kobe had shaq, Pierce had Antoine, etc.,) and you'll see a similar lack of success.

Even still, tmac didn't have an equivalent. he had starting 5's where his second best player was a young mike miller and darrell armstrong. The rest of his team weren't even stalwarts on defense like Allen Iverson's teams were. On both sides of the ball, those magic teams were tragically below par.

That's how most of the teams were built back in the days. 1999-2000 Magics won 41 games before T-Mac got there. He never improved the Magics at all, he can't carry a team. Grant Hill carried a Pistons team to 54 wins with an old Joe Dumars on his team...
@JLau910
@JLau910 6 жыл бұрын
The 1999-2000 magic weren't an awesome team but some notably good players on that team that would have greatly helped form a good support cast around tmac were corey maggette, matt harpring, ben wallace, chucky atkins, etc. These were all players that didn't follow into the 2000-2001 magic team. Perhaps a lot of these players left because of their minutes being taken up by tmac and Grant Hill. Perhaps it was due to cap space but even a point guard like Chauncey was on that 1999-2000 magic team though he never played cuz of injury. Regardless, what followed was a magic team that was built on having tmac and hill and because hill went down, not only did tmac not have another star to play with, but there was no space on the team left to sign any other significant players. True, Dumars was hitting the end of his playing career but look at the rest of the roster and compare it to Tmac's first season with the magic. I suppose you can equate Darrell Armstrong to Lindsey Hunter, and Mike Miller to Michael Curry but look at the pistons' bigs. Young theo ratliff was no joke defensively and otis thorpe still had some in the tank, along with bad boy rick mahorn. If you watch the magic games back then, it was hard enough for tmac to get his 6 assists a game passing to stiffs like andrew declerq and one trick ponies like Pat Garrity. If he just had some level of apt, solid role players, it would have been enough. Regardless, I'm not going to discredit everything about this video, because I think tmac's main weakness was his lack of leadership. But in terms of him overall, I don't think players like Pierce, Carter, & Allen faced quite the level of bad luck as tmac did. I'm not saying ALL those teams had superstars, but none of the has a key/star contributor/big offseason signing never play with their other star, costing them any ability to sign other key role players. At least to my knowledge. Tmac probably should have stayed in Toronto with VC and we probably wouldn't even be debating.

Jon Lau Baron Davis owned his soul in that series. They were not underdogs in the slightest. That series was 50/50. Look at that final possession in OT, TMac wanted nothing to do with the play or BD. He had fear in his eyes! Orlando were also not favorites against the bucks, but that Bucks team was atrocious on defense, and he underperformed in that one too. The only nod I'll give you is those Houston teams. They needed a better bench, and injuries caused a lot of chemistry issues. I think it is safe to say, that we never even got to see an 80% Houston team in the playoffs during his tenure. Still, he was the leader of those Houston teams, and he had big hiccups in those series (missed defensive assignments, turnovers, and missed free throws). That is unacceptable imo. Outside of that, I still agree Tmac was overrated. He was a flashy player, and they have a way of tricking us with their play style. where we see them do an incredible dunk, or make a ridiculous shot, and they pass the eye test. We immediately revert to this guy is legit. However, most of these players are exposed in the playoffs when the real scouting report happens, real defense is played, and the game slooooows down, and fundamentals become key. It happens to almost all of them.

I knew what T Mac was about when he left one of his best teammates he ever had in Toronto to "be the man" in Orlando. Also when he was mocking Big Dog Robinson in the playoffs but losing the series. Also him talking about "it feels good to get out the first round of the playoffs" vs Detroit before the series vs over, only to lose the series. He saw AI, Kobe and Vince getting the shine and wanted a situation where he wold get paid and score. Then people propping him up cause he was a flashy swingman. The way he looked at it was, if he won great, if he didn't great. As long as he got his and was "the man". Then the injuries.

Hmmmm....seems similar to Lebron apologists....except in TMac's case its all because of injuries and no help. Hall of Fame worthy players usually win at least one playoff series. Accountability has to mean something as the best player on your team. Missing key shots during possible "winning" moments has nothing to do with injuries or not having enough help. The era of excuses....continues. You win....you are lauded...you lose....criticism comes. Many forget how much criticism Jordan received until his team finally managed to win the NBA championship.

Oscar Brown but Lebron actually wins And let’s not talk about Jordan when there were FINALS series where Scottie was playing offensively as well as the FIRST scoring option and he still had his HOF defense. FOH T-Mac is a HOF, but no one puts him in a top 10-20-30-40-50 or maybe even 60. This whole video is truly nitpicking at its finest. The only bad series was against Charlotte. This guy put McGrady accomplishments and puts under the rug like yea he put up 36 points in while playing 45 minutes but let’s focus SOLEY on the last 2 minutes of the game. And let’s call a 15 ppg season his prime gtfoh
@oscarbrown9041
@oscarbrown9041 6 жыл бұрын
mrslash blade I get your explanation....but "context" still is relevant. There have been many top scorers that have come through the league....but in my opinion a true HOF needs to have some sort of "winning" resume credibility (playoffs or championships). Look at how the Raptors top scorers are performing now.....I've heard many think DeRozan might eventually put up HOF worthy "regular season" stats....but again...."in what context". HOF status has to be validated by some sort of winning. Even legendary top scorer Alex English of the Nuggets managed to win a playoff series in his career.
@MrSlashblade
@MrSlashblade 6 жыл бұрын
Oscar Brown you know what fair enough I honestly can’t find any counterargument other than the only people who put DeRozan in the HOF are Raptor fans. But the only weak counter argument is there are voters who selected this man to represent the top 6 Guards/Forwards in the league and in 03 he was the best guard in the league while DeRozan struggles to make A All NBA team. I still stand by the fact that this video was unfair and didn’t have the decency to highlight instances where you asked McGrady to put up clutch shots despite he’s being ran like a race horse for 46 minutes. Not everyone is like a Jordan Kobe Lebron where they can still be just as lethal in minute 48 as they are in minute 1.
@oscarbrown9041
@oscarbrown9041 6 жыл бұрын
mrslash blade Agreed. These type of videos can prompt debates about biased opinions about Tracy McGrady's "true" value as a player....yet again "winning" has to be factored in as being considered an HOF. TMac's late game efforts withstanding.....he didn't "ever" win a playoff series in the 1st round. This fact cannot be ommited. This video's explanation about his teammates being able to advance without him is a valid point. Criticism is not always a "slight" but instead a measuring tool to put accomplishments and failures in the proper "context"

Most people overrate people like TMac, Brandon Roy and even DRose because they had potential. Most of them say "if it wasn't for injuries, XYZ would've been a top 10 player of all time!!" or stuff like that.

Let's be real tho Orlando never had a good team with Tmac, it was basically like when kobe had those couple years with smush parker and Kwame....kobe an all time great didnt' do anything with them. When Tmac went to Houston he got them in the playoffs but Yao was hurt alot and so was Tmac, take into account that he west was loaded with defensive teams like the SPURS in their own devision and many more teams. For his prime years he was ELITE, could've been better but nonetheless he was elite in his prime. Top 20 player of his era, probly top 60-70 player of all time

Sure, he had his great moments but at the end of the day, they don't help him much when it comes to his overall success. ['Your a hater comments' incoming]
