For me it is Balto. Boris and Vlad are similar even if Boris is more slapstick but as a father figure to Balto...besides Vlad I cant think of one more wholesome. Also an underrated gem that first was not doing so great but became a huge hit on VHS. Balto and Jenna are also good role-models- Baltos kindness and empathy is what drives his arc and Jenna is kind but not afraid to set boundaries. She also kicks a grizzybears butt. It may not be a Don Bluth movie - but it is the most Don Bluth movie you can find he was not involved with. Anastasia for me is also one of those movies I keep coming back too again and again and "Journey to the Past" and "Once upon a December" must be on my Christmas playlist. It has so much heart and if you are not getting chills by the "Once upon a December" mark - you have no soul.

I found the bat creature to be disgustingly immoral. Why does he get a pass at the end? They did this with sidekicks in the Michael bay transformers also. Apparently henchmen can’t be bad because they’re just carrying out the evil bad guy’s will? So Goebbels and Himmler are chill?

Kids are more resilient than you think. I first watched this movie when I was a little kid and not once did the so called "scary" scenes phase me. I knew Rasputin was evil and so all the weird and dark things he was involved in just seemed natural to me. Ps. @@AFlyingWalrus This movie isn't a good masterpiece because of the miscast of the third-class actors. If Don Bluth would work on Anastasia together with Tim Burton and Danny Elfman, this movie would be more creepier and spooky. And at my opinion, Christina Ricci and Johnny Depp would be a great cast for Anastasia and Dimitri. And Tim Curry as Rasputin, of course. Tim Burton would like this movie, but would give it a gothic charme...

@@kriscynical It says here when Fox hired Don Bluth to do an animated film he had three options. The King and I, My Fair Lady, and Anastasia that's it. Don Chose Anastasia because he knew that My Fair Lady couldn't be toped. This also the very first Don Bluth film to not have John Pomeroy involved in any way as he left Bluth for Disney. Which explains why Anastasia isn't like his 80's films.

@hourglassrewrite
@hourglassrewrite 2 жыл бұрын
I think the movie dealt with some simple ideas for self-growth like love, family, loyalty, and identity.. but also touched on chilling ideas of betrayal, amnesty, nationalism, death, and so on. But because it was presented during its time via animation it was easy to pass on as a children's film, despite certain themes and... animations not being suited for children. To be honest I think this style of storytelling and animation gives Anastasia a certain "evergreen" feeling. There's some nostalgia in the story, music, and animation, but also opportunity to revisit topics with a more mature mindset. It's brilliant.

You mentioned that the story of Anastasia has never been done in a film before, but this movie has pretty much the same premise as the 1956 Anastasia movie featuring Yul Brenner. In fact, a lot of the animated Anastasia is based off of that movie- Anya (or Anna, as she's called in the '56 film) having amnesia, her being trained to pass off as Anastasia despite being the real Anastasia, and the romance between her and the conman hoping for reward money. I love the animated film with all my heart, but people give it too much credit for it's originality where it isn't actually original.

And the record of overlapping tastes in movies, TV and KZbin media continues to extend. More than that, it’s really gratifying to hear my reasons for liking it echoed back from you: I don’t really know if I could pinpoint what makes this a masterpiece aside from the music, but it all comes together so beautifully. Not to say that it’s difficult to say what is great about this movie, but unlike with so many Disney movies that have individually great set pieces, this is really more of a package deal where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And yeah, I don’t know how they got away with all the villain stuff either. It’s Black Cauldron level stuff and it’s mind-blowing that this was a kids movie. Just a last personal thought on this. I went back and watched this a couple of years ago after a long time not having seen it, remembering that I really enjoyed it but not why. I can’t say this about a lot of kids animated movies, but I’d say I got a richer experience much later, and that’s not just because I have a better ear for the music now or I can better appreciate the animation. The witty banter really is something that separates it from most animated movies of this ilk, and understanding the serious history behind the events of the show really impresses on you a gravitas that I couldn’t appreciate as a kid. I can only think of a handful of Disney movies that managed to improve after watching it much later in life, but none so much as this.

There are several movies from this era of film and animation that were just amazing. Atlantis, Mulan, and a few other of the Disney classics come to mind, and they just… enchant. They lay out these beautiful worlds, that today we just… don’t see. No one produces films depicting a beautiful countryside. It’s all dingy, dirty, the moral palette of charcoal soot, and acidity with sarcasm and millennial humor. I want more things of this era, if the background details and I saw this when I wasn’t quite as interested in history, but now I’m interested in going back and seeing that which I missed as a kid.

while i disagree about films needing a role model for kids, i think kids films do need intellectual concepts and material that is above their supposed age. Im not calling for ultra violence or swearing but adding adult concepts and plot lines doesnt hurt the kids and makes adults more likely to watch their show. As a kid i could tell when my parents didnt like what we were watching, and i got that a lot more from modern animated films and movies than old ones. Something dumb like boss baby is something that my parents and i now would never enjoy, treasure Island and Atlantis were just as good for me as my parents. Its a shame that modern animated films are not similar to how they were and seem a lot of the times to just be dumb comedy, at least disney and others are comming out with some good animated shows

I grew up with the films of Don Bluth - notably The Land Before Time - and Anastasia is a movie I love too. The songs are gorgeous and the romance arc is a well-written slow burn and believable. Also, on the note of "role models" in animated films, a role model of mine (since the age of ten) has been Manfred/Manny the mammoth from the 2002 animated film "Ice Age." Ice Age is another one of those films I consider an underrated masterpiece, and ironically enough, Don Bluth was set to direct Ice Age before it was sent to Blue Sky after the failure of Titan A.E. so it has a vague Bluth connection too. Plus, Ice Age (2002) is harsher, compared to its sequels, and is a *dramady* and is able to hit both its dramatic and comedic tones masterfully. I recommend watching it if you've never seen it Ice Age is one of my absolute faves. :)

Titan AE was one my faves. The ending lives rent free in my head. For me it is like if someone mixed Treasure Planet and Anastasia into a film.

This video just makes me smile because it's so obvious that you love this movie just as much as I do (and let's face it, probably more since you took the time to make this video). It wasn't ever a favourite of mine as a kid (I think my mum didn't like this movie for some reason so we didn't watch it much), but I LOVE it now so much. Amazing music, fantastic characters, gorgeous animation (great backgrounds and use of CGI), connection to one of my favourite time periods (as a history nerd), and I am absolutely obsessed with all Anastasia's outfits. It also just ticks a lot of boxes for me in terms of niche things I like in movies. Princesses, boats, trains, Europe, rags-to-riches, quests, grandmas that always know what's up, the 'turning up in a gorgeous dress' bit (this movie does it FOUR times at my count, love it every time - 'Once Upon a December,' on the boat, at the ballet, and when she puts on the crown and it transitions into her princess look), criminals that are still likeable, real dates and locations, to name a few. Honestly, I think it shocks a lot of people how much I love this movie because I'm one of those people that when you're watching a movie says stuff like 'oh, in the book they did _' and I think people expect me to have a problem with the historical inaccuracies - I mean, not even a single second of this movie is accurate in the slightest. But I really couldn't care less if the movie is entertaining - FYI, historical inaccuracy is a completely valid reason for someone not liking a movie, it just doesn't bother me personally.

Was at home a few weeks ago and came upstairs to my wife who had just started this just after putting our son down for a nap. He thankfully slept the whole time so we could just have a nice period of peace and watch this great film. Truly one of the great 2D animated films

I've always loved this movie, although it scared me as well, and I remember having terrible nightmares the day I saw the movie in the theater, Rasputin, the underworld, his demonical minions and the nightmare scene were, of course pure nightmare fuel for a 5 year-old child.

I didn't grow up watching Anastasia, but I recently watched it bc my older sister loves it and I kept hearing Once Upon A December when reading my books, so I cave in and watched it y'know? And God, it was so fun! What u said about the music is so true! Once Upon A December has such a sadness to it and seeing the scene and understanding the context almost made me cry. In The Dark Of The Night is a amazing villain song too, I'm still listening non-stop to it

A big part of the animation looking the way it does is that it was HEAVILY rotoscoped! They filmed real people and animated directly over it. The animation is done well without the rotoscoping, but there's something I love about rotoscoped and motion captured animation, even if it's not as "authentic." It's more natural, and I love it.

The dialogue in this movie is the best. I believe the same studio made Thumbalina... and that actually is just as well made with great dialogue. But this movie was way better. Honestly, the dialogue was only possible with amazing actors like Angela Lansbury, Kelsey Grammer, Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Christopher Lloyd and Hank Azaria to name a few. They're each amazing and legendary actors in their own right. Talk about a dream team for voice overs.

Laissez-faire of Années folles Paris, the glitz and glamor of Imperial Russia, the dialogue, the story, the animation. Only a few movies have so thoroughly captured my heart like this one. Années Folles Paris just ugh it's up there with Belle Époque Paris and 18th Century Paris. That aay'han nostalgia where you romanticize the place and period yet are aware that it's only after the fact that it seems so thrilling or because you never been. One of the few other heartbreakingly beautiful movies for me is the Devil Wears Prada. And the glitz and glamor of the fashion industry, of New York. Ugh.

Lol there’s a funny story I have about this movie, my friend‘s grandfather lived to be 107 (I know it’s fucking crazy lol) but he was born as a Ukrainian Jew under the Romanovs and his father and a couple of his brothers were killed in a program, and when my friend watched this his grandfather was in his 80s or 90s and apparently he watched part of the movie in silence walked over picked up the TV and threw it against the wall 😂

Okay, I have loved this movie ever since I first watched it as a little girl. To the point that Once upon a December has became a lagit luluby for my brothers that I used to sing to them to get them to sleep and cumfort them whenever they were hurt or sad. It is now being passed on to my daughter in the same manner. So, thank you for talking about and giving recognition to something that had meant so much to my family.

About the role model thing. I kinda agree with you, but if the story doesn't have a good role model, it should at least have a very good lesson to be learned. Update: I thought about it and the film that comes to mind is Coco. A film that even parents can learn from. In the end I was crying.
