How did this English food become a local delicacy in a small town in the mountains of Hidalgo Mexico? What is the connection between Mineral del Monte and the British county of Cornwall? Let's find out!
As you may know, I'm from the state of Hidalgo in central Mexico and today I'm going to show you a beautiful mountain town and tell you about it's fascinating and unexpected history.
The mountains surrounding the city of Pachuca, Hidalgo are rich in minerals and mining was central to the local economy for centuries. As a result, small towns like Mineral del Monte flourished and attracted immigration from across the world.
In the 19th century, a British company from Cornwall in England invested in the mines in Hidalgo and a lot of Cornish miners travelled from England to work in Mexico. These miners brought their local food and customs with them and now, the Cornish pastie is a local specialty, made with a Mexican twist!

Can you think of any other international foods which Mexicans have adopted as their own? Would you be interested in videos about it?

I have to believe Mexico drinks more Coke per person than any other country. The type of bread Bimbo makes. Snacks you typically buy in Oxxo. Chinese food is big in Mexico, or at least a Mexican version of it.

I remember when visiting Mexico seeing spins on American foods like pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers. I think it is interesting since those were American spins on European foods :D food never stops changing

You might want to examine the origins of 'tacos al pastor' which were apparently brought to Mexico by immigrants from Lebanon. Similar to 'sharwama'. Mexicans of Lebanese heritage such as Carlos Slim (the richest man?), the actress Salma Hayek, the Chedraui family (big chain of stores). Probably many more examples.

Pastes are available in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They were eaten by miners in the copper mining towns. While in Calumet, MI, I tried a few with potato, pork and beef, including some with chiles. Need to visit Real de Montes to see how they compare. Looks yummy.

Such a beautiful town rich in history and so nice to see the adoption of some British food. I now have another place to add to my bucket list, but I also want to try a pastie with chillis. Maybe a little bit of Mexican tradition can be adopted by us British. Love this story

Saludos!

Old style Cornish (miner's) pasties were meat , onion and potato one end , and jam or fruit the other...
@stevebarlow3154

Traditional Cornish pasties contain potato, swede (rutabaga), onion and beef in that order, so the meat juice helps to cook the vegetables below it.

I think a video of Dolores Hidalgo would be nice to share birth of Mexican independence, but Corralejo Hidalgo is a favorite place of mine. My friend's family lives very close to Hacienda Corralejo which is currently used as part of tequila factory, but was formerly home of Miguel Hidalgo. The only foreign tourists that I've seen there were Japanese. I'm always the only gringo when I go anywhere around there.

Proper British food is very tasty and, as in this video, British food dishes have spread around the world. Plus every high street in the country has numerous ethnic restaurants, whether they be Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian, Spanish, Mexican etc.
