Spot on. The physical diversity you see in competitive archers is not a product of what is necessary for success, but instead a reflection of the fact that waistline measurements have a negligible impact on archer performance. For any sport, physical build comes down to how success is measured. You'll see a correlation between more "athletic" builds and success being a function of moving the athlete over a distance in the shortest possible time. Moving more mass more quickly requires more power. The more power you're trying to generate, the harder it is to sustain that power for longer. Being successful requires athletes to minimise mass while maximising power output (power to weight ratio) for the required duration of their activity. For example, 100m sprinters tend to have more muscle bulk because they're optimised to generate extremely high power, but only for a very short duration. Long distance runners opt to be lighter so that they can run lower, more sustainable power output for very long durations. In target archery the athlete remains stationary, so power to weight ratio is irrelevant. What matters is the muscles required to draw the bow string, position the bow, and stabilise the body.
@NUSensei3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to note that the burst-potential of a sprinter is idolised through media ("the fastest man alive!") and their physique represents the peak of human fitness, while the thinner long-distance runners are sidelined even though they might look unhealthier than the "overweight" athletes in other sports.
@infinity3453 жыл бұрын
@@NUSensei Indeed. Perhaps some of that can be attributed to media's inherent love of sensationalism. Really we should be qualifying that as "Fastest man alive (over 100m)!" I'm sure there's someone faster than the Olympic gold medallist over 1m. ;) It's also worth wondering whether the sprinter physique is idolised in that way because it's visibly fast, or because it conveniently aligns with the media's concept of a perfect physique?

Snarky comments notwithstanding (many of which I enjoyed) I think the better question is why so many archers are deconditioned. My archery improved dramatically and I greatly reduced muscle aches after I started a regular conditioning program. I prefer 3D as opposed to static archery. In addition to 30 minutes of archery 5 days a week, I walk at least a mile each day and practice another 30 minutes of beginner yoga postures. If I can do this at 71, all archers should be able to add some reasonable conditioning program to their practice. The vast majority of us will never have Ms. Loring’s physique, we will all enjoy archery more and improve with conditioning.

These guys with bellies are more fit than you think with more than enough muscle strength and mental calmness!
@marcelllovas14653 жыл бұрын
it is pretty easy : archery is a standing, relaxing, literally not moving sport or martial art. You are using only verz few muscles, and it wont burn literally any extra fat, no matter how heavy is your bow. You burn more fat to going and picking up your arrows from the target than from a 2 hour shooting session. However if you are a horseback archer you will become lesser fat, it burns some fat to trying to stay on a horse while shooting.

Pretty simple explanation. Archery is not physically demanding sport. It doesn't require stamina or a large amount of strength. However if you look at bow-hunters, many of them are in athletic shape. Getting close to an animal takes a lot of rigorous footwork while hauling extra weight. Not only that heavier draw weight is prioritized over super precise accuracy. The isolated act of archery is not a physically demanding activity.

I sit all day and learn because I am in a training program at my job and have been for almost a year now. I stopped running before work, eat like crap and gained 20lbs during that time. I am a better archer today than I was a year ago, but that comes down to practice and learning. I definitely feel off more often now than I used to, my heart rate gets elevated more easily, which I notice when I shoot, and muscle fatigue seems to set in more noticeably than it used to even though I still shoot 60-100 arrows a day. Being in shape definitely helps, and I need to get back there before December when I have my next backpack hunt.

@@AVOinc There's no "accidentally" letting go with your fingers. If that happens, it's purposeful, or you have a muscle or nerve disorder which you really should get checked out. Additionally, the chances of the bow blowing up from a dry fire are quite low, given that these risers and limbs are put through hundreds of dry fire shots in testing. SPTs have been a common training method for decades and is used at top level. Stretching bands are a very good substitute, but it's not dangerous to use the bow.

@@NUSensei I would respectfully disagree. You loose concentration for a second and just slightly relax your fingers and the string will pull itself out of your fingers. In both occasions the limb tips were ripped off of the limbs, on one a tiller bolt was bent and both loops on both strings were ripped apart. I don’t give advice lightly when it comes to archery because I don’t always feel I’m qualified to do so, but when I do it’s because I’m confident I know what I’m talking about because I’ve lived it. Because they were fat and unfit before and chose archery. The beauty of Archery being so inclusive is also why most people unfit for any active sports can end up as archers. Archery doesn't make you fat but doesn't make you healthy neither. All it does is putting a massive load on your heart and central nervous system without putting your body in aerobic mode. Pro archer heart rate goes up to 180 in matchplay with barely any muscular intensity. You don't burn much more calories than you'd do at Masal Metabolic Rate. Saying that, the 2 new individual gold medalists were slim, (Ann san) et skinny (Mete). With the general population getting more and more overweighted (67% of Australians are overweighted, +7% in 5 years), fit archers will become a rarity.

It's interesting that you put up the hypothetical increase in competitiveness being a driver for fitness. In S. Korea, where archery is an elite competitive sport, we still see the top archers (Kim Woojin, Oh Jin Hyek) being big-bodied despite their professional status and daily training routine, which makes top archers from other countries look like high school kids. The focus on archery training simply isn't in overall fitness.
