It's because of the Soviet Bolsheviks, who wanted oil and also good diplomacy with Turkey to involve Turkey in Soviet Union. So they said just, there's no difference, we are one Union country and let the Armenian land, the Karabakh be in Azerbaijani territory. But always, in all times, more than 80% of population of Karabakh were Armenians. And the Karabakh was independent earlier than most of the Soviet Union countries. Azerbaijan left the Soviet Union without Karabakh. Even the ex president of Azerbaijan accepted that fact, he announced that the Karabakh was not a part of Azerbaijan, that they had left Azerbaijan without Karabakh.

Artsakh (Karabakh) is an integral part of historic Armenia. During the Urartian era (9-6th cc. B.C.) Artsakh was known as Urtekhe-Urtekhini. As a part of Armenia Artsakh is mentioned in the works of Strabo, Pliny the Elder, Claudius Ptolemy, Plutarch, Dio Cassius, and other ancient authors. The National Council of Azerbaijan SSR, on the basis of the agreement between the Azerbaijan Revcom and the governments of Azerbaijan SSR and Armenian SSR, the Declaration of June 12, 1921, proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh an integral part of the Armenian SSR.

A lot of civilians are died or injured after these missile attacks. Azerbaijan doesnt want Armenians leave Karabakh, but Armenian armed forces. According to international norms, as well as the constitution and laws of USSR, during the collapse of the USSR, the people of Nagorno-Karabakh had all the rights to self-determination through free will, which they did. Therefore, Nagorno-Karabakh has never been part of the independent Azerbaijan. In other words, Nagorno Karabakh has nothing to do with the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

The Republic of Artsakh was founded by a free and fair referendum which had an 82.1% voter turnout, in which 99.8% of voters chose to create an independent state. The people of Artsakh hold that their independence is one of liberation from Azerbaijan, which had been occupying them for the last 70 years.

About whether it did have the right for self-determination. There is a very clear explanation within international law with regards to ethnic groups and self-determination. Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) was an autonomous region within the Azerbaijan SSR (and before you start, no, it was not "granted" to Azerbaijan in 1921, please open the document dated July 4 where it says "Remains within" not "Joined to") and had no secession (self determination) right under the 1977 USSR Constitution in contrast to the Azerbaijan SSR and the Armenian SSR along with the other 13 Soviet republics. As it was expressed by the Badinter Commission in its Opinions No 2 and 3, only those Yugoslav republics were entitled to exercise the right to secession who were granted such right under the SRFY Constitution. NKAO did not and could not exercise such right under the USSR’s Constitution and the 1991 Secession Law. After the collapce of USSR, all former fifteen Soviet republics agreed to follow the uti possidetis juris principle, i.e. transforming their former administrative borders into the international boundaries. CIS Charter, Alma-Ata Declarations and other multilateral legal instruments signed between the former Soviet republics expressly confirmed this. Armenia signed and joined ALL these agreements w/a a single reservation. This means an express agreement to recognise Azerbaijan’s international boundaries within the former administrative borders of the Azerbaijan SSR including NKAO. Under the principle uti possidetis Nagorno-Karabakh is a part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. About self-determination: under International Law ethnic groups are not allowed to external self-determination (secession) targeting the territorial integrity and international frontiers of sovereign states. The “remedial theory” which has a little support in International Law, it's not the Nagorno-Karabakh case either. NKAO was enjoying its right to internal self-determination in full, with the use of own language, culture, education in schools and universities in Armenian language, and 90% administration was in the hands of the local Armenians. No any single proven case of genocide or any other serious crimes ever took place on the territory of NKAO. During the war phase of 1992-1994 the international community witnessed and documented crimes against Azerbaijani ethnic civilians living in the region and the villages surrounding it committed by the Armenian military forces, resulting in around 1,000,000 refugees. The Khodjaly massacre is an evident case. There are many resources that can be easily googled on this, but just to warn the graphics may be disturbing. I repeat, those people who support the hashtag payforArtsakh, or stopazerbaijaniaggression. Think before you say it. Almost thirty years of waiting to resolve this conflict peacefully. A lot of policies proposed to protect the civilians of Nagorno Karabakh who either want to stay in their homes but within Azerbaijan or leave. Refusal to respond with aggression to many acts of terrorism. A million refugees that have not seen their homes and cannot return. I am not even mentioning the nationalist 90s massacres. And then imagine that to be your country. Imagine your children under those ruins sleeping and never waking up. And think again. You know, after the three unprovoked attacks on Ganja Azerbaijan has still not responded with a single bollistic rocket or a single soldier on the territory of Armenia. Since the news about Ganja appeared (for the third time during the last three weeks), I have seen a lot of Armenians in the comments applauding, calling to destroy all of the cities and kill all of Azerbaijani children to cause the civilian protests. A lot of disgraceful, heartless and nationalistic words. Armenian side has explicitly said that it was targeting “a military airport” in Ganja three weeks ago. As a result, people were killed and injured. During the last two attacks at civilian block houses, it suddenly denies its involvement, even though the type of rocket used zenith-S (Russian suplied to Armenia type of weapon) and the coordinates of its flight clearly show that which side has sent them. They also continue to target the hydroelectric power plant in the middle of Azerbaijan and the pipelines.

Artsakh had been the homeland of indigenous Armenians for thousands of years before the Turkish invasion in the 11th century, and the arbitrary change of the Soviet Union’s provincial boundaries by the brutal Soviet Leader Stalin in 1921 to include the majority Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast within the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR); the Azerbaijan SSR had only been a Soviet Union province, so Azerbaijan can’t claim to be the successor of a sovereign nation (note: ‘Successor States’ may not have the same border, like Tukey after the Ottoman Empire); Soviet laws defining the Azerbaijan SSR and its federal provincial boundaries became null and void when the Soviet Union was dissolved by the Supreme Soviet on 26 September 1991, allowing the Azerbaijani declaration of independence on 30 August 1991 to become legally recognized by other nations, but there was no automatic sovereign rights to the entire territory of the defunct Azerbaijan SSR [province]; as a new nation, Azerbaijan couldn’t demonstrate key tests of sovereignty - control over people and Nagorno- Karabakh’s boundaries and the majority Armenian neighboring territory (now called Artsakh) since 1988; both the majority-Muslim Kosovo and majority-Christian Nagorno-Karabakh independence referendums were approved by over 99% of voters (26 - 30 September 1991 and 10 December 1991 respectively); and if Azerbaijan and Turkey recognize the principle of Kosovo’s right to declare independence in 2008 when the federal nation of Yugoslavia disintegrated, then the same principle must be applied to Artsakh when the federal Soviet Union fell apart.

Nations, cultures, race and ethnicities are all fundamentally social constructs (that's not to say that those things are totally irrelevant). I believe they should have mentioned that the fighting and Armenia seizing control after the war in 1920 was a response to Azerbaijan comitting massive massacres such as the Susha massacre. Over 20.000 people were killed even though Armenians made out the majority of the Susha population. The pogoms and expulsion of Ethnic Armenians in the 1988 also create the need for Armenia to interact and protect civilians who are being massacred and expelled... I fin it a bit odd that so many massacres against Armenians have taken place, while massacres against AAzeris by Armenians are very few and usually in responses to major massacres against Armenians. Simple: Since 2 March 1992 Armenia is a member of the UN. Same as Azerbaijan. If you apply for a membership you have to declare the borders of your country. This means since 1992 Armenia has officially accepted the geographical region which defines Armenia these days. Same did Azerbaijan. The region "Nagorno-Karabakh" has _nothing_ to do with Armenia besides people of the same ethnic/religious group are living there. the actual nkao that wants to reunite has always been armenian majority, while the occupied surrounding lands were mostly ethnically azeri. thats why to rule those regions long term is not really in their interest, nor is oil or whatever. it's the history of the region. there isnt a connection to surrounding areas as nkao because those have been azeri majoirty for 100 years . stepanekert was sieged and attacked at the beginning of the first war so they had to establish a buffer zone so to speak. and also to gain a negotiating leverage. and thats exactly what happened, in 2007 armenia was willing to give up those lands for artsakh recognition but azerbaijan refused. somewhat understandably azerbaijan wants all of it.

I think it is worth mentioning that when we say "Armenian ethnic majority", it must be remembered about over a million of Azeri people expelled and around 30000 killed. So that next time there are posts about 'unprovoked' attacks on Artsakh, you know that it is not an attack on people but on the military forces that have been preventing those refugees to see their homes for 30 years. Yes, it is horrible that innocent people have to flee their homes, that some of them were the victims of artillery, but it was never a target, the target was to create an opportunity for other people to live there, too. 30 years of waiting to fulfil the UN resolutions is an evident proof of Azerbaijan being a supporter of a peaceful resolution. On the other hand, the missile attacks in Ganja, on populated streets located far within Azerbaijan with mo military objects there is nothing but killing for the sake of killing, hatred and terror.

I am russian and I don’t live in Armenia nor Azerbaijan therefore I am not bias. Here is a history who doesn’t know it. The issues have been going on for centuries in Artsakh! And the history is very complicated. Here is what we have...Artsakh aka Karabakh used to be part of great Armenia in 2nd century BC. Everyone wanted that territory back then: Persians, Turks and even Arabs were trying to concur it. Most population of the region are Armenians and some of them were forced to leave the area. Then in 1813 Frankfurt peace deal came in and Artsakh became part of Russian Empire but Armenians and Azerbaijans couldn’t get along in Artsakh region. Then in 1918, three countries declared independence and became Republics: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Artsakh, as of its own region, didn’t want to be part of Azerbaijan but USSR Bolsheviks still gave Artsakh to Azerbaijan for whatever political reasons back then. For many years, people in Artsakh where protesting and expressing their wish to not be part of Azerbaijan; however, they were dismissed by Bolsheviks. Why? Because if they will agree to change their decision then it would look like that people are actually can be in control and therefore it will show weakness of the government and they didn’t want to set an example for other parts of USSR. However USSR crumbled anyways. First, Artsakh had referendum to get out of Azerbaijan. Then in 1991 across all USSR, a referendum was held and Artsakh performed a 2nd referendum and got out of USSR. 1991-1993 Artsakh war started between Republic of Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians in Artsakh who were backed by Armenian Republic. Why? Because Azerbaijan didn’t agree with the referendum and till this day consider Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan. That conflict ended with a Peace agreement and technically Armenia won yet issues were still there. Then in April of 2016, clashes arise and issues started escalating again. As of for Turkey, Turkey traditionally and always supports Azerbaijan. Turkey hates armenian people. And during World War I, Ottoman Empire aka Turkey pretty much performed Armenia genocide! So what is Russia got to do with any of this?! Armenia and Russia are part of “Collective Security Treaty Organization” which means if Azerbaijan will attack Armenia then Russian have to get involved and protect Armenia BUT since Artsakh is not part of Armenia they cannot do that (and please mind Artsakh is not part of Azerbaijan either). Armenia is the one who can resolve this and they need to officially unify Armenia with Artsakh! Now let’s talk about problems. One of the problems is that USA is sponsoring Azerbaijan military for many years ...why? Because Armenia is partnered with Russia, so USA must be on the other side...god forbid USA will help Russia or be on the same side if the war starts....but now war is happening and all this countries are indirectly involved....Russia who doesn’t want to go into the war, therefore acting very distant from this conflict, USA who is sponsoring Azerbaijan and being very silent at the moment, Turkey who is “fueling the fire” and haterade towards Armenian people...Canada already put sanctions against Turkey but that’s not enough...all these counties need to realize the issue and act on it!! It is a war! And we need to stop it!

The term "occupying" is inappropriate here. These "occupiers" are indigenous civilians that have been peacefully living in their ancestral lands. Armenians have lived there for centuries before there was any Turk in the region. So what is wrong? - The host indicated 4 UN resolution, but did not mention that these resolutions DEMAND Armenia to withdraw from OCCUPIED lands of Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan is trying to free up it's occupied lands, but this is linked to business and Turkey's regional interests - Turkey is involved as military advisor and SELLs (not supplies free) weapons to Azerbaijan. But there was no question about free delivery of weapons to Armenia (so far most of heavy weapons are not bought, but provided free by Russia). Yet no questions. VERDICT: BIASED VIDEO.
