@Jim I agree. A lot of people are still in denial about the realities of immigration on wages. Successive UK governments have applied so many rules and regulations in the UK truck industry over the years but have strangely allowed that same industry to affectively do as it pleased around drivers pay and conditions. The UK government should also move with the times and get rid of the ridiculous and outdated ''Other Work'' rule which allows drivers to be on duty for up to 15 hours a day, including being able to legally drive in both the first and last hour of that 15 hour day. The 9 or 10 hours of legal driving time can be conducted at any time throughout that extremely long shift and is nothing short of outdated and dangerous. Work is work regardless of what activity is being conducted and in this day and age, there should be no difference between driving time and other work with a maximum daily duty time of possibly no more than 12 hours. If the government has the power to legislate on drivers hours specifically for HGV drivers, it also has the power to legislate on industry specific pay for the HGV sector, something which countries such as Australia has already been doing for many years.

Threw myself to deep end and chose ICU. £2100 a months (after tax) after long days, weekends and nights in London is way too little for what’s needed to be done. I didn’t come into this for the money but an ankle fracture last year at work that needed surgery and recovery made me think of everything in my life and I’m one week from resigning from NHS and don’t want to do nursing anymore. I’m a male nurse and actually my friend is pushing me to do C+E here in the UK and now this video popped up:)) I might consider a career as a lorry driver.

Its not really a realistic solution to the culture problem to just move abroad or work abroad. In fact that has been one of the reasons why this is the situation. Everything has been so convenient for our politicians being in the EU. All the fundamental problems with our culture and way of life has been brushed under the carpet because we can just outsource everything to those across the water that have lower living standards who would be willing to do the work. I'm referring to places like Poland, Romania etc. We have alot of lower paid jobs etc in the UK that bring in overseas workers. And its true when people say "they are taking our jobs" but they are jobs that the British wouldnt want to do anyway due to the stigma and negativity, long hours for low pay etc. When I was a student I used to work for a catering company that often did events such as the Grand Nationals horse racing etc. I would say that out of 200 catering staff, 20 of us were British Citizens. We used to have people insult us and make fun of us. Sometimes teenagers boasting about betting more money we earn in a year on a horse in front of us. And instead of us trying to fix this negativity in our culture its just "ah well leave those jobs for people abroad".

Most companies relied on cheap EU driver's which had an impact in the sector, it made the job less attractive as the hours were getting longer, more nights out, inhumane treatment turned to be a culture. Most driver's didn't evacuate because of Brexit, they left because of IR35, which was introduced by the same government who want Eastern European driver's up to Christmas Eve or Easter Sunday, because that will resolve the shortage, that's just bloody disgusting. The Government needs to rethink the whole driver shortage saga, as more investment on drivers apprenticeship skeam is needed more than anything else, an investment on the drivers and drivers facilities, before we loose even more of these unsung heroes.
