Kids understand a lot. And yes, they need a comprehensive manual to their neurobiology, sexuality and anatomy before they strike puberty. And that is a easier task in countries were people are less religious/more ok with nudity/more rational. A extremely good sex ed would solve that problem. Censored cartoons make it only a bigger problem.

oh man I remember the fandom got so upset when they messed with Derpy's eyes cause it was pretty much erasing the 'disability' that the character had and pretending what made her unique was never there and stuff- people threw a huge fit and she was changed back to normal in later episodes lol

@Trollestiatumblur4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember that! I haven’t seen mlp in YEARS but one thing I will always remember is when the whole fandom got really pissed that they changed Derpy’s voice and eyes. I saw mothers comment stuff like “my child has a disability and Derpy was their favorite because they can relate, and now you changed it and made it seem like there is something wrong with having disabilities and they need to be fixed” or something. I have a lazy eye (which nobody can tell because I can focus well enough unless I’m super tired, focused on something, really relaxed, or reading/typing sometimes because it’s easier) and I literally never saw a problem with Derpy and I was confused as to why they changed her. But the only people who complained were people that didn’t have a disability, so that’s typical

I think my favorite ridiculous thing 4kids censored were objects that had text on them. Even when the text was in english. Like in one episode of Sonic X, there's a shot of a sign that reads "The House of Amy Rose," and 4kids just...erased the words and left the sign blank. Sometimes they'd even replace words with scribbles.

4kids licenses weren't just for America, many countries dubs were based directly on the 4kids dub, so that's why they removed English text. One edit that makes ZERO sense however is changing Luffy's mouth from open to closed and removing the sparkles from a character's eyes in One Piece...

Oh my God, yeah! I'm American, and I've been watching Regular Show since it premiered. Episodes were left untouched for SEVERAL years, and then around 2013 or so, CN began airing censored versions of early episodes! For years, I've been wondering why on Earth the episodes were changed so suddenly when the network didn't have an issue with them for quite some time. What's even dumber is that, now that they're airing on Boomerang - usually late at night, when only adults would be tuning in (for the most part) - they're STILL being censored... (Also, yeah, I remember cracking up at the "plank" edits when I found them as a kid; UK slang is so funny to me...xD)

I feel like there’s a lack of cartoons aimed specifically at teenagers. We have adult cartoons, which are all about sex ,violence, and swearing. We have kids shows, which can get really simple and watered down. And then we have “kids shows for all ages”, which are smarter and more complex, but tethered to their need to be appropriate for children. I always thought there should be a “Young Adults” classification for cartoons. Cartoons that can be more mature, more upfront with serious topics or sexuality, more vulgar in their humor. But not not full on Bojack Horseman or Rick and Morty. Some shows already fit that category. 6teen, Total Drama, Daria, Young Justice. But those shows are increasingly rare. You either make a kids show (which all ages might enjoy), or you make an adult show. There is little in between.

@undefinederror404044 жыл бұрын
@@AliCatGtz Ratings are needed and very useful, but cencorship can be so wierd. I'll never understand why they thought turning the lesbian couple in sailor moon into cousins... Being gay isn't wierd for kids if they haven't already been pushed into the idea that women can only love men and vice versa, saying two lovers are cousins might actually give kids the idea that it's okay to be like that with their own cousins...
@nelmae60264 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is very fucking stupid tbf. When the censor lgbt, they are probably peoplr and parents who don't want to "expose" kids to lgbt, they may have somewhat grew in a non-accepting childhood, because you know about the past history of lgbt, right? If only other people would realize that it's okay for kids to know about lgbt, to understand that it's okay, not grow to hate on them, and not get confused. That applies to other things such as love, language, etc. The roles of older people should teach the younger ones better knowledge rather than giving them crap that would want them to avoid them. If that keeps happening, then the individual will get very confused once they grow up, because they were given some bad perspectives about life and the world.

I know this comment is from 3 years ago, but first cousin romantic or sexual relationships aren’t illegal in most of the world, even in western countries. The reasons I think is due to not being a very big chance of children having deformities despite twice the increase and no unbalanced power dynamics if they are around the same age if they grew up in separate households. I highly doubt everyone or even a lot would consider going for their cousins as the traditional family value would still be there as well as there being many other people to have a relationship with. The only issue I see is if cousins give birth to children that happens every generation due to increases in chances of deformities and the severity of them. As long as no one is being forced and given a free choice to if they want to have a relationship with their cousin or not, then I don’t see the harm

When MLP:FiM got started, its first season was rated E/I, educational and instructional, safe for everyone and their grandmother. This wasn't exactly censorship; there's no version with those words, replaced or not. It was notes to the production staff not to use the word "stupid," and they didn't. With the second season came a plain TV-Y rating, and featured an episode with a main character driving herself crazy. The show took its newfound liberties to heart, yeah.

Theres a big difference in context though. Billy and Mandy had edgy and shocking humor throughout the entire show, and was directed towards older kids and young teens. Not too out of place here. Considering the whole point of the show is to teach friendship and kindness, mean-spirited vocabulary is kinda out of place Apples n oranges

I think total drama did the blurs as a stylistic choice. Granted, they wouldn't have been able to go uncensored if they wanted to, but I feel it was a poor example.The show is supposed to be a reality show, so of course it wouldn't have originally aired uncensored. Real reality shows don't air uncensored nudity on primetime tv. The censored words though were worth bringing up

In 6teen, there’s an episode where Jonsey gets a job at a lingerie store. His reason for why they hired a teenage boy? He said he was gay. But in the US version, he said he was “famous.” And there’s at least one more time where they change the word “gay” to “famous.” I don't remember if it was censored or not, but there was also an episode where they talk extensively about “girl crushes” as a platonic crush with no sexual implications. I remember they actually said the word “sexual,” which is practically unheard of in US cartoons. Off topic, but in hindsight, that lingerie store plot point was super creepy. It’s basically Jonsey peeping on women undressing in the changing rooms. That’d throw up a lot more red flags these days than mentioned someone is gay.

In Japan, teenage homosexuality is mostly considered a temporary life phase, it's wasn't uncommon to see gay couples in doramas and movies from the 60s all the way over to modern times, and even before in prose literature. For an extremely conservative society like Japan is expected that girls eventually make it though and "graduate" to begin a family building relationship. So, for the most part, it's was a turmoil to western licensors and syndication management, in Japan it was a staple of school life.

I love Total Drama And 6teen at the time it was mind browning they had a lot of censors pushing the limits of what a cartoon can be like Heather being topless or That Girl who told Nikki’s she gay these shows were ahead of its time I still love it today as well Steven Universe proving to kids that love is all in shapes and sizes Censorship is an interesting topic but anyways that was a good video Saber!^-^
@marinaatkin15816 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Love comes in all shapes and sizes! Just not ages. Or species. Because if one partner can't consent, it's not ok.
@brandonlyon7306 жыл бұрын
Something you don’t see to much though is interracial relationships and I don’t mean by alien races or anything like that but just regular human races. The last time I ever saw that in a western cartoon was in Rugrats.

With 6Teen and the gay character thing, that was more to convince parents it was ok because not long before gay marriage became legal here in Canada

As soon as I found out that MLP was Canadian, I realized that Canada's made a LOT of popular media, such as... Just Shapes & Beats (a.k.a JSaB) Among Us Henry Stickmin Annihilate - Destroid Battle For Dream Island [all seasons] (a.k.a BFDI) and well, I could go on...

The reason 'cider' was changed overseas is because outside the USA the word cider refers only to alcoholic cider.
@novidsnosubs97585 жыл бұрын
In Ireland it stayed the same, despite being associated with being an alcoholic beverage. I guess we're already so used to being stereotyped as drunk leprechauns anyway that someone just said 'f*ck it' and let it air as is😂
@oneofmanyparadoxfans54475 жыл бұрын
@@novidsnosubs9758 Which is odd, because if I recall correctly, Ireland is actually pretty sober except on occasions where you'd expect people to be drunk out of their minds, i.e., Oktoberfest, birthdays, Mardi Gras, things of that nature.
@novidsnosubs97585 жыл бұрын
That Bad BLU Spy you are very correct, it is odd that we are stereotyped as such, as like you said, we are generally a rather sober country. It is certainly true that aside from certain days of celebration, such as rare family get-togethers and hen parties, the majority of people do not drink much at all. If it is my place to ask, are you Irish yourself?

That's only because you chose Uranus *IT WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT FIT!!!!!!!* Seriously though this was an interesting topic and I'm actually not too certain about what censorships have happened in my country since I mostly watch the English versions online instead of the local dubs on TV in my country. One thing I believe for sure though is that Ruby & Sapphire from Steven Universe wouldn't be a problem here. I mean my country legalized same sex marriage all the way back in the 80's so that shouldn't have any problems.

My friend is really into sailor moon, and when she told us about the “cousin” thing, me and one of my other friends just started singing “sweet home Alabama”. It was probably the best unintentional duet I’ll ever be part of.
