why are charity shops and thrift stores so expensive now?

Here in Canada, the last 5 years.. going to goodwill shops is more expensive than buying just new...

It’s definitely a shame, I’ve switched to free clothing swaps now because I can’t afford the charity shops in London. Thrifting is especially popular and pieces can even be more expensive than new items.

i haven’t heard of free clothing swaps! that’s such a fantastic idea. but yep - a huge shame that people are being priced out of the very stores that once supported those with low incomes ☹️

@@PSYDAA yeah there are two in London I know of, loan hood which takes places every few months and fuckfastfashion has a swap shop in hackney that's usually open weekly. I definitely think in London it's the 'cool' thing to do so the charity prices are much higher than elsewhere, like 15-55 quid and some thrift shops are much higher than that.

Sometimes it's cheaper to shop in Sainsburys, Asda, Prinark etc than the crazy prices in some of the charity shops. Often they won't accept donations because they have too much stock, yet they won't turn the items over quicker by selling cheaper. Crazy .... and greedy (as they get stuff given!)

I’m in California, and the prices at large thrift stores are outrageous! They charge retail prices for used clothing and items. I don’t shop or donate to those places anymore.

It's not so much the price of the items in charity shops now. It's more the lack of variety among the racks of clothing. It just seems to be crammed full of Primark & H&M castoffs. No individual fashion styles & clothing brands. Yes, there are still a few gems to be found, but very seldom post Covid. My favourite pieces of charity shop clothing are my Harrington jackets & my Fred Perry polo shirts.

Hugely agree, the turnover of fast fashion is so enormous. Charity shops seem to have become somewhat of a dumping ground for last seasons’ wardrobes:(
