It would be really nice to see how exactly you made the topographic map. Start with getting the data to setting it up in QGIS to burning it in Lightburn. I would like to make topographic map that incorporates land and sea if you could show how to do that I think alot of people would really appreciate it. I can't find alot of good information on setting this up. Thanks in advance

Hi! Great video! Just started learning Illustrator but I could not create a Clipping Mask - not shure what that does but I will google that later. Anyway when I import that file into Lightburn all my roads are just thin lines even if there were a lot thicker in Illustrator and QGIS. Any idea why? Thanks!

I do have the same problem. Lightburn only interpret the path instead of the stroke. You may redraw the path in AI but then I face a ton of additional path information and in Lightburn the lines are thicker but not closed or shows all single parts of the vector. Up to know I have not figured it out. Have you found a solution for this issue?

Enjoyed it, Brandon! That was a great walkthrough of how to do this type of thing. I think I'll try to come up with one...maybe where my wife and I got married. One thing I'll have to get over as a hurdle is that the Glowforge doesn't recognize clipping masks. Not sure how to get around that in the software.
@makeorbreakshop
@makeorbreakshop 5 жыл бұрын
Wow didn’t know that, I haven’t tried it but you might be able to export from a vector software a straight DXF file. You could also do a work around and bring the file in a Lightburn (using the 30 day free trial) and then export the DXF directly from there into Lightburn if it takes that file.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 жыл бұрын
@@makeorbreakshop Hmmm...not sure. I've never messed with Lightburn. Might have to give that a try. The Glowforge doesn't use DXF files. It can use pretty much everything else, but those.

I'm not sure if its a new update but the QuickOSM has a preset called "Urban" that will pull like 95% of the data you need into multiple layers in under 90 seconds. I did almost all of metro Tucson which I wasnt able to do with the other method. It kept timing out on me and said pick a smaller area.
@bartclaeys
@bartclaeys 2 жыл бұрын
Where do you install or find that preset in QGIS? Also, what's the 5% lacking data?
@newzerozeroone
@newzerozeroone 2 жыл бұрын
@@bartclaeys when you open the QuickOSM menu on the left side you'll see the tabs click the top most tab and itll give you the urban preset. You'll still have to chose canvas or whatever but it'll pull almost everything. The 5% tends to be little things like water fountains, pools, and grass areas. But in my experience all the roads, buildings and paths are all there. Its sooo much faster too.

Cool as an overview but could not call it a tutorial - tutorials teach and DO get down into the weeds!!! They also understand students know nothing and go slow with big screen shots showing menu items being selected... you know... teaching? Then you can call it a tutorial that gets down in the weeds

@@ArionJMcCartney Gottcha! So I walked through how I got all the building/road data but speed through the elevation. You can download data sets of elevation from the USGS. Then inside of QGIS go-to raster > extraction > contour and pick the image you have to pull the data from. Then you can customize the heights that you want lines, starting elevation and a bunch of other stuff.

Very nice video. Thank you! I am looking to do some 3D files for my laser to engrave. The way that it reads it is through a black and white bitmap file. The darkest areas are engraved the deepest and as the shades of gray get lighter, the laser engraves with less power creating a 3D effect. Is there any way to manipulate the map data to do this. I know it's kind of a tough question but I'm trying to get more into this. Thanks.
